1. Luke Combs, “The Kind of Love We Make”

💿 Growin’ Up🏷 River House Artists LLC / Sony Music Entertainment • 🗓 2022

Luke Combs, Growin' Up [📷: Sony Music Entertainment]“So, I’ve been thinkin’ we need / A little time alone / So what you say we cancel our plans? / Tonight, I’m only gonna be your man.” Ooh-la-la!  Country music can be sexy. No, not just those hunky, rough and tumble men 😍, or the gorgeous women 😍, but the music itself.  🎙 Luke Combs is not the first country musician that comes to mind when sex is involved but he sings about the universal three-letter word on 🎵 “The Kind of Love We Make”. “The Kind of Love We Make” served as a single from Combs’ 2022, third studio album, 💿 Growin’ Up.  He penned the record alongside 🎼 ✍ Dan Isbell, Jamie Davis, and Reid Isbell.  Sex definitely sells, or at least, can fuel a top 10 pop hit.  “The Kind of Love We Make” peaked at no. 8 on the Billboard Hot 100, which is a big deal for a country single.

Luke Combs doesn’t get nasty on “The Kind of Love We Make” but him and his wifey do get down.  In the chorus, the tone is set with “candles burning / And some records turning / All the lights down low…” Of course, beyond setting the mood, Combs touches on the pleasure when he sings, “The way your body’s moving / Keep doing what you’re doing to me all night long /… Girl, I want it, gotta have it / Let the passion take us to a higher place / Makin’ the kind of love we make.” Ooh wee, child! Honestly, it is a self-explanatory song.  Furthermore, with sex being universal, it does not require translation. What more is there to say about 🎵 “The Kind of Love We Make”? Luke Combs and his wife are having bomb-ass sex – period.  Combs does not get raunchy about it, but, he does not have to. Combs doesn’t seem to have a problem with love making 😈.

2. Kendrick Lamar & Taylour Paige, “We Cry Together”

💿 Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers • 🏷 Interscope • 📅 2022

Kendrick Lamar, Big Morale & The Big Steppers [📷 : Aftermath / Interscope / pgLang / Top Dawg Entertainment]Among many showstoppers that grace 💿 Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers is 🎵 “We Cry Together,” where 🏆 Grammy and Pulitzer Prize-winning rapper 🎙 Kendrick Lamar is joined by actress 🎙 Taylour Paige.  Paige steals the show, serving up a dynamic, emotional, and utterly raunchy performance.  There’s nothing spiritual about this rough, verbal altercation between two lovers.  Both treat each other like $HIT.  It is one of the most profane records you’ll ever hear, with the chorus playing out with both oscillating between “Fuck you, bitch” and “Fuck you, nigga.” The issues raised often transcend the gutter language including feminism, toxic masculinity, and hypocrisy. Also, shout out that glorious 🎙 Florence + The Machine sample and the production overall!

3. Nicki Minaj, “Do We Have a Problem?” (Ft. Lil Baby)

💿 Queen Radio: Volume 1 🏷 Republic • 📅 2022

Nicki Minaj, Queen Radio: Volume 1 [📷: Young Money / Republic]“Tell ‘em my niña, my bitch, she a rider / I got a shooter, and I got a driver.” Woo! 🎙 Nicki Minaj teams up with fellow 🏆 Grammy-nominated rapper, 🎙 Lil Baby on 🎵 “Do We Have a Problem?”. Enigmatic sounding at the onset, it commences with a brief, spoken-word intro by Nicki (“I just told P, ‘This really niggas’ worst nightmare, man / They don’t wanna see Lil Baby with the Barbie’”). Soon enough, the production (🎛 Papi Yerr) settles in, and Minaj offers up a melodic chorus that grows on you with later iterations.

“Tell ‘em my niña, my bitch, she a rider

I got a shooter, and I got a driver

They want that heat, I’m the only provider

Little bad foreign bitch, word to Fivio

Niggas know the vibe, that’s word to Five, yo

Beef, we ‘bout to resolve, yo

Pull up on a opp, do we have a problem?”

After showing off the gift of melody on the chorus, Minaj serves up un-pitched, tough, ‘gives no fucks’ rhymes in the first verse.  She shouts out Pop Smoke and Juice WRLD, brags about drip, and is willing to do whatever “to get an opp back.” Lil Baby arrives in the second verse, providing a contrast. His verse settles in a bit more.  Like Minaj, Baby is nothing short of confident and dripped out.  Minaj later drops the third verse, boasting more of the same. A banger, Minaj and Lil Baby bring toughness, packing some punch.

4. Miley Cyrus, “We Can’t Stop”

💿 BANGERZ🏷 RCA • 🗓 2013

Miley Cyrus, BANGERZ [📷: RCA]On her 2013 album, 💿 BANGERZ, 🏆 Grammy-nominated artist 🎙 Miley Cyrus dove headfirst into hip-hop culture. Sometimes her dive into the culture was triumphant, while at other times, it was shameful and NOT without loads of controversy. 🎵 “We Can’t Stop” solidified that controversial journey. Cyrus embraced a carefree party, one where “We can kiss who we want” as well as “Screw who we want.” In the first verse, there’s booze, “sweaty bodies,” and the expectation “somebody here might get some now.”

The pre-chorus embraces one of hip-hop’s most unfortunate happenings – MOLLY RAP!

It finally died out, but during this time, molly was everywhere, and so, Miley copped molly:

“So, la-da-di-da-di, we like to party

Dancing with Molly…”

‘Course, in the chorus, “we can’t stop” is the mantra.  In the second verse, it’s more of the same.  Miley references twerking, cocaine (!), and “getting turned up.” Woo! Truly, Cyrus doesn’t lie when she asserts in the post-chorus, “It’s my mouth, I can say what I want to.” Interestingly, Cyrus would eventually separate herself from hip-hop. Go figure!

5. Carolina Gaitán, Mauro Castillo, Adassa, Rhenzy Feliz, Diane Guerrero & Stephanie Beatriz, “We Don’t Talk About Bruno”

💿 Encanto 🏷 Walt Disney • 📅 2021

Encanto [📷: Disney]“We don’t talk about Bruno, no, no, no / We don’t talk about Bruno.” Encanto became ubiquitous QUICKLY.  Released in late 2021, it wasn’t until 2022 that the soundtrack would ascend to the penthouse.  Do you know what else ascended alongside the soundtrack? That would be arguably the best song, 🎵 “We Don’t Talk About Bruno”.  “We Don’t Talk About Bruno,” which dethroned 🎵 “Easy on Me” by 🎙 Adele, spent five weeks at no. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, DESERVINGLY!

There are six performers credited to “We Don’t Talk About Bruno”: 🎙 Carolina Gaitán, 🎙 Mauro Castillo, 🎙 Adassa, 🎙 Rhenzy Feliz, 🎙 Diane Guerrero, and 🎙 Stephanie Beatriz. All contributors play an important role in making this Academy Award snubbed song the masterpiece that it is. Also, give ample credit to the composer extraordinaire, 🎼✍ Lin-Manuel Miranda – such a gifted soul!  So, the question is, why don’t we talk about Bruno exactly? Well, Bruno Madrigal is estranged from the Madrigal family because of his fortune-telling abilities, which often end up badly for the family.   Famously, Pepa – assisted by Félix – is angry because:

“It was my wedding day (It was our wedding day)

We were getting ready

And there wasn’t a cloud in the sky (No clouds allowed in the sky)

Bruno walks in with a mischievous grin (Thunder)

You telling this story, or am I? (I’m sorry, mi vida, go on)

Bruno says, ‘It looks like rain’ (Why did he tell us?)

In doing so, he floods my brain (Abuela, get the umbrellas)

Married in a hurricane (What a joyous day, but anyway).”

My, my, my! Besides clever songwriting making “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” so entertaining, the music is awesome too.  The spirit of Colombia is written all over this one, and I’m so happy that the United States received a slice of it!

6. John Batiste, “We Are”

💿 We Are 🏷 Verve • 📅 2021

Jon Batiste, We Are [📷: Verve]🎙 Jon Batiste delivered one best and most satisfying albums of 2021 with 💿 We Are. The thing is many folks didn’t hear it or perhaps, even know about it.  Well, after winning five 🏆 Grammys in 2022, including the highly coveted Album of the Year, people are aware now.  Batiste is an extraordinarily talented musician who’s now won an Academy Award and multiple Grammys.  Here, we focus on the WE song, 🎵 “We Are.”

“We are, we are, we are the golden ones / We are, we are, we are, we are the chose ones.” Jon Batiste commences We Are grandly with “We Are.”  Here, the incredibly gifted musician enlists numerous collaborators including 🎙 Gospel Soul Children’s Choir and the 🎙 St. Augustine High School Marching 100.   The results are exceptional, with expressive, nuanced lead vocals by Batiste, a soulful arrangement and production, and thoughtful songwriting (“Joy / He won’t let it go / Oh no / Joy /That he doesn’t know /What he doesn’t know”).  All the music touches are elite.

7. Lil Baby & 42 Dugg, “We Paid”

💿 My Turn (Deluxe) • 🏷 Quality Control• 📅 2020

Lil Baby, My Turn [📷: Quality Control Music / Motown]🎙 42 Dugg certainly sets the tone for 🎵 “We Paid” on the intro: “Can’t be fucked with.” Indeed, that seems to be the case on this standout from 💿 My Turn (Deluxe). “Young turnt nigga, can’t wife no bitch / Excuse my French, don’t like no bitch.” Yikes!

Of course, My Turn arrives courtesy of 🏆 Grammy-nominated rapper 🎙 Lil Baby, who also holds his own on this totally 🎵 “unfuckwittable”  joint.  He rides the 🎛 Section 8-produced beat like a champ.  He asserts at one point, “I put on drip, I believe I can fly / Niggas know that I’m rich, but they know not to try.”  After an extraordinary year in 2020, I have no doubt that Lil Baby truly got P-A-I-D like 🎵 “Big Bank”!

8. Dua Lipa, “We’re Good”

💿 Future Nostalgia (The Moonlight Edition) • 🏷 Warner • 📅 2021

Dua Lipa, Future Nostalgia: The Moonlight Edition [📷: Warner]After releasing the best pop album of 2020, 🏆 Grammy winner 🎙 Dua Lipa reissued it in expanded form in 2021 as 💿 Future Nostalgia (The Moonlight Edition).  Among the gems of the deluxe version is the single, 🎵 “We’re Good.”  Honestly, you could characterize this as the track to beat – the crowning achievement.

Sleekly produced by 🎛 Sly, Dua Lipa has a superb backdrop to paint those expressive pipes over.  Her tone and respective vocal nuances continue to impress, particularly in the chorus.

“We’re not meant to be like sleeping and cocaine

So, let’s at least agree to go our separate ways

Not gonna judge you when you’re with somebody else

As long as you swear you won’t be pissed when I do it myself

Let’s end it like we should and say we’re good.”

She’s at her best towards the end of this brief but potent number when she ‘lets loose,’ all without ever losing composure or dare over singing.

9. Leith Ross, “We’ll Never Have Sex”

🎵 “We’ll Never Have Sex” • 🏷 Republic • 📅 2022

Leith Ross, "We'll Never Have Sex" [📷: Republic]“Oh, you kissed me just to kiss me / Noot too make me cry.” With a song title like 🎵 “We’ll Never Have Sex,” our minds are programmed to think that there is an unquenched thirst that will remain unquenched.  Honestly, that’s not the case in the least.  If anything, Canadian singer/songwriter 🎙 Leith Ross is more fulfilled than ever.  They are more fulfilled thanks to a legitimate, healthy relationship that’s not built on sex.  “We’ll Never Have Sex” might sound like it’s going to be negative before listening to it, but check out the lyrics and listen, and the reward is far greater than the perceived lack of pleasure.

Leith Ross has found healing on this short but potent ballad. Their new lover is authentic, something that’s been missing in the past.  “Depollute me, pretty baby / Suck the rot right out of my bloodstream,” Ross sings in the first verse.  In the second, Ross addresses the lack of sex, highlighting how authentic and real this person is: “If I said you could never touch me / You’d come over and say I looked lovely.” That’s awesome!  In the final verse, Ross invites them to “Come and kiss me, pretty baby / Like we’ll never have sex.” The song is incredibly sweet; thoughtful to the nth degree.

10. Tyler, The Creator, “Are we Still Friends?”

💿 IGOR • 🏷 Columbia • 📅 2019

Tyler, the Creator, IGOR [📷: Columbia]🎙 Tyler, the Creator has come a long way – an understatement. His career has been filled with controversy, including ample examples of homophobia.  However, beginning with his 2017 album 💿 Flower Boy, he began to open up about his own sexuality.  That continued on the most ambitious, unexpected album of his career, the 🏆 Grammy-winning 💿 IGOR.  No, Tyler never comes right out and says what everybody is thinking about him sexually, but undoubtedly sexuality plays a pivotal role in this relationship and romance-driven, non-traditional album. Tyler, The Creator concludes IGOR with the brilliant, 🎵 “Are We Still Friends?

Question(s): “Are we still friends? Can we be friends?” “Are We Still Friends?” concludes IGOR soulfully and radiantly. “Are We Still Friends?” samples the Memphis soul of Al Green (🎵 “Dream”). In the context of IGOR, “Friends” feels like a natural follow-up to 🎵 “I Don’t Love You Anymore” because it serves as a resolution.  Basically, what Tyler wants to know is post-relationship, can he and his ex- remain friends (“If we can still see each other / Shake your hand, say hi…”). Interestingly, 🎙 Pharrell Williams appears as does 🎙 Jack White, who delivers an uncredited guitar solo.

11. H.E.R, “We Made It”

💿 Back of My Mind • 🏷 RCA • 📅 2021

H.E.R., Back of My Mind [📷: RCA]H.E.R. gets off to an awesome start on her debut album, 💿 Back of My Mind, with🎵 “We Made It”. Early on, the instrumental shines, taking nearly a minute to simmer.  I heart the production by 🎛 DJ Camper and 🎛 Flippa. Once Wilson begins singing, she’s ‘on-point,’ never over-singing, delivering expressive and nuanced vocals; the richness of tone is stunning.

Beyond the picturesque backdrop and sweet vocals, there’s also strong songwriting.  Wilson mixes contemporary, love-motivated, reflective, and gratitude within the same song. There are several key moments, including a favorite:

“They said I won’t come up with the family and cop a couple of Grammys

All the things they said I can’t be, revenge taste just like candy.”

To reiterate, “We Made It” is an awesome way to start off Back of My Mind.  Furthermore, it’s awesome standalone record.

12. Mariah Carey, “We Belong Together”

💿 The Emancipation of Mimi 🏷 Island Def Jam • 📅 2005

Mariah Carey, The Emancipation of Mimi [📷: Def Jam]Question(s): “Who else am I gonna lean on when times get rough? / Who’s gonna talk to me on the phone ‘til the sun comes up / Who’s gonna take your place? There ain’t nobody better / Oh, baby, baby, we belong together.” Really, is there any introduction needed? 🎙 Mariah Carey was everywhere in 2005, experiencing a resurgence in popularity that many music artists only dream could happen. 🎵 “We Belong Together” was a big reason for that, earning 14 weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot 100.  💿 The Emancipation of Mimi gave Carey her biggest critical and commercial triumph in years.

“When you left, I lost a part of me / It’s still so hard to believe / Come back, baby, please / ‘Cause we belong together.” “We Belong Together” is simply an enjoyable, well-rounded R&B break-up song.  Mariah Carey misses her man and begs him to come back because, in her eyes, they “belong together.” It’s well-produced (Carey, 🎛 Jermaine Dupri, and 🎛 Manuel Seal) without being incredibly flashy. The production does get a lift from two samples 🎵 “If You Think You’re Lonely Now” (🎙 Bobby Womack) and 🎵 “Two Occasions” (🎙 The Deele featuring 🎙 Babyface). Its simplicity and straightforwardness serve it well.    The biggest selling point? The voice – “marvelous darling!”

13. Teyana Taylor, “We Got Love” (Ft. Ms. Lauryn Hill)

💿 The Album 🏷 Def Jam • 🗓 2020

Teyana Taylor, The Album [📷: Getting Out Our Dreams / Def Jam]“We got love, love, love / You better believe it.” The crown jewel of 💿 The Album by 🎙 Teyana Taylor is 🎵 “We Got Love”, featuring 🎙 Ms. Lauryn Hill.  The biggest takeaway from “We Got Love” is how reflective and thankful the record is.  Taylor counts her many blessings, none of which are about clout or drip of any sort. She focuses on family, self-love, and positive, uplifting vibes. Hill doesn’t have a gargantuan role on “We Got Love,” but her interlude adds some spice to this love-centric, socially conscious, and reflective number (“You keep your focus / You keep your sense of love / And you keep your sense of purpose…”).  Ultimately, “We Got Love” is great way to conclude a great album, as well as one of the best songs of 2020.

14-15. Queen, “We Will Rock You” / “We Are the Champions”

💿 News of the World🏷 Hollywood • 🗓 1977

Queen, News of the World [📷: Hollywood]“Buddy, you’re a boy, make a big noise / Playing in the street / Gonna be a big man someday.” Continue 🎙 Freddie Mercury! “You got mud on your face / You big disgrace / Kicking your can / All over the place, singing…”  EVERYBODY and his brother (or sister) can sing the following line: “We will, we will rock you!” 🎵 “We Will Rock You” (💿 News of the World, 1977) is not only one of the best 🎙 Queen songs of all time but one of the greatest songs of all time! One big reason “We Will Rock You” is the sugar honey iced tea is Freddie effing Mercury.  Mercury’s voice was once-in-a-lifetime. The lyrics, particularly the sing-along chorus, is another reason why “We Will Rock You” is EPIC.  The verses are also energetic and memorable.  All that said, the thing that really makes this record so timeless is the body percussion. Children and adults everywhere love the simple yet innovative groove that is instantly recognizable.  Also, give some love to 🎙 Brian May and that awesome guitar solo (and writing the song).

The second WE song from Queen from 💿 News of the World is the #winning, 🎵 “We Are the Champions”! “I’ve paid my dues / Time after time / I’ve done my sentence / But committed no crime,” Mercury sings, continuing, “And bad mistakes / I’ve made a few / I’ve had my share of sand kicked in my face / But I’ve come through / (And I need to go on and on, and on, and on).” Like “We Will Rock You,” “We Are the Champions” ranks among the all-time great songs by the iconic rock band as well as the greatest songs of all time.

“We are the champions, my friends

And we’ll keep on fighting, ‘til the end

We are the champions; we are the champions!”

Truly, there is “No time for losers,” because EVERYBODY embraces that championship-winning spirit listening to Mercury’s epic vocals on the certified masterpiece.
