1. JORDY, “BREAKUP SEX”

SEX WITH MYSELF AND IT LASTS LONGER // JORDY / EMPIRE // 2024

JORDY, SEX WITH MYSELF AND IT LASTS LONGER [📷: JORDY / EMPIRE]“Felt so good until it burned / But I ain’t ever one to leave behind loose ends.” In some cases, the ‘burn’ isn’t a good feeling… at least sexually.  But in the context of the first verse of “BREAKUP SEX” by JORDY, our handsome pop singer/songwriter isn’t referencing an STI… In this case, his relationship with his boyfriend has gone south.  That said, a key component of his single isn’t about their demise but about what they do before their demise.  “Darlin’, you want me, you got me / One last time.” Yes, before they call it quits, they ‘hit it.’ JORDY and producer POM POM penned this sexual happening. And who’s to judge, especially if the soon-to-be ex-boyfriend was good in bed?

“Breakup sex

You and me undressed

Only one night left

Do it like we’ll never do it again

Get wet, leave it all in the bed

Do what we do best

‘Cause you know we’re gonna do it again.”

Reading into the shallow chorus where sex is king, one has to ask, beyond the breakup sex, will they hook up down the line again? Also, analyzing the relationship, how much of a role did sex play in it?  Emotionally, things aren’t sound (“All my tears only fed your flame”) but sexually… (“And always pleasure coming with the pain”).  JORDY ‘brings the heat’ to his performance, singing beautifully and enticing us fiercely. Who doesn’t desire to be the recipient of that good sex? With a fabulous instrumental and a tuneful melody, “BREAKUP SEX” is the S-H-I-T!

2. JORDY, “BREAK MY!”

SEX WITH MYSELF AND IT LASTS LONGER // JORDY / EMPIRE // 2024

JORDY, SEX WITH MYSELF AND IT LASTS LONGER [📷: JORDY / EMPIRE]“Want it rough, kinda tough, like it when you dig your nails / In love with your touch, bubble butt, happy trails.” Holy shit, JORDY! The handsome, talented gay pop artist excels at being transparent (and sexy) when it comes to music. “BREAK MY!” is another example of his horniness being utterly relatable, particularly if you identify as the G in LGBTQ 🏳️‍🌈. Bubble butts and happy trails? Yaas kween! In the first verse, he continues to speak sexually, chanting playfully, “From the bed to the floor, I can be your dirty whore / Kinda sore, carnivore, eat you like a carnivore.” Ooh-wee! JORDY penned “BREAK MY!” alongside Bradley Kim, Heather Sommer, and producer Mattisnotfamous. The club is lit on this sleek, naughtily produced gem. So, what exactly does JORDY want his boyfriend, friends with benefits, or whoever this guy is to break? His back! In the repetitive refrain, he encourages the back-breaking, which is the equivalent of rough sexing. Before the refrain, JORDY continues to champion fulfilling gay sex: “Do you wanna ride it? We’re only getting started /… Spread it, lick it, let’s get that exercise in.” For good measure, he’s in no rush – he wants to feel the pleasure of the pain. But, in the second verse, he desires a faster tempo and a “big crescendo, make my head lean back like limbo.”  With an infectious performance, slick production, and ear-catching, effects-laden vocals, “BREAK MY!” is a mean-sounding, must-hear, unapologetically gay sex song that’ll easily have you beaming with pride and make you horny as fuq.

3. Megan Thee Stallion, “Broke His Heart”

MEGAN // Hot Girl Productions LLC // 2024

Megan Thee Stallion, MEGAN: ACT II [📷:Hot Girl Productions LLC]“That pussy broke a nigga heart, broke his heart, uh.” Ooh-wee, Megan The Stallion 🫢! Comin’ in hot, gurl! “This pussy got grip (yeah), pussy made him trick (ah) / This pussy here turn a real nigga to a bitch.” In “Broke His Heart”, the fifth track from Megan, the third studio album by the Grammy-winning rapper, she says pussy nine times in the chorus alone 😳.  For the most part, she brags about how good ‘it’ is. At the end of the chorus, keeping things sexual, she implores him to “Dick me down, slut me out, put it in my ribs, ayy / Grab my throat and up my wrists.” Holy shit 😳! Tay Keith produced the NSFW joint which samples “I Luv It” by Jeezy.

The chorus is a lot. However, that’s not the extent of Megan Thee Stallion kicking ass and taking names with her bars. She’s bold, confident, unapologetic, and sexed-up throughout the sole verse. “What I’m doin’ on the ‘Gram, I can do on the dick,” she asserts, adding, “Do a split on it (yeah), suck and spit on it.” Damn! Also, a prerequisite for sexing: “Hope you could handle all this shape, ‘cause I ain’t fuckin’ with no squares.” She’s picky, y’all 😏! Even being sex-positive, Megan informs us, “That’s my dick and I don’t share.” Megan ends the verse with a ‘bang’ 🤭: “Booty so nice, bitches think my shit fake… / I like girls and I like niggas (yeah), both of ‘em gettin’ ate (ah) / And when he slip it in, that pussy feel great.” Did you catch that bisexual reference? “Broke His Heart” is somethin’ else! It is NOT SAFE FOR WORK, PERIOD! EXCLAMATION POINT!

4. St. Vincent, “Broken Man”

All Born Screaming // Total Pleasure // 2024

St. Vincent, All Born Screaming [📷: Total Pleasure]“On the street, I’m a king-sized killer / I can make your come.” From the jump, “Broken Man” is an ear-catching gem from St. Vincent (Annie Clark). St. Vincent ‘brings it’ on this high-energy tour de force from her self-produced album,  All Born Screaming.  “Broken Man” engages from the onset.  The instrumental is unique – distinct, intriguing, and minimal.  This minimalist sound is hypnotic, serving as the perfect accompaniment to her. Clark delivers colorful, distinct vocals atop the backdrop.  She brings ample attitude and personality to the table.  “Hey, what are you looking at? / Who the hell do you think I am?” she asks in the memorable chorus, adding, “Like you’ve never seen a broken man.” Woo! After establishing the minimalism in the opening verse, “Broken Man” gets fuller instrumentation in the second, led by the lyrics, “Lover, nail yourself right to me / If you go, I won’t be well…” That’s a moment in itself.  Notably, boisterous, distorted guitars (and synths) kick some serious ass… AND TAKE NAMES! By the conclusion of “Broken Man,” it has transformed into this epic, hard-rocking alternative cut bearing some industrial influence.  St. Vincent is one of a kind, something she flexes hard on the must-hear “Broken Man”.

5. Drake & 21 Savage, “Broke Boys”

Her Loss // OVO // 2022

Drake & 21 Savage, Her Loss [📷: OVO]Drake and 21 Savage are a match made in heaven… in the most hellish way possible.  The Grammy-winning rappers always seem to bring the heat when they link up, hence, why their joint 2022 album, 💿 Her Loss, was a massive success.  Joining a list filled with boys of all sorts – boyfriends, fuckboys, and pretty boys – the duo highlights “Broke Boys” on the 11th track from Her Loss. “Broke Boys” is a two-part rap banger.  In Part 1, Drake is the aggressor initially, performing the first verse and the chorus.  On autopilot, with no shortage of confidence, Drizzy references lux foreign ride and mentions the 6 (of course).   In the chorus, that confidence soars, capped off by the final two lines, “You boys gettin’ ready to diss, but don’t even mention the O / And don’t even mention a foe unless you boys tryna go broke.” Oh, $hi†! 21 Savage takes the second verse, spitting ether in his aggressive, deadpan style, asserting, “She called me mucus, I stay in her throat / Stick hit that boy, got his ass hittin’ notes.” Da-yum! As for Part 2, Drizzy dominates, dropping one verse and emphasizing throughout, “I can’t talk to broke boys.” Among his most potent lines: “Nigga went and bought a house when he coulda bought a verse / Niggas dumb as fuck, imagine if I did that stupid shit when I was comin’ up.” Woo!

6. Rod Wave, “Break My Heart”

Jupiter’s Diary: 7 Day Theory (EP) //Alamo / Sony Music Entertainment // 2022

Rod Wave, Jupiter’s Diary: 7 Day Theory (EP) [📷: Alamo / Sony Music Entertainment]On “Break My Heart”, Rod Wave continued to be prolific. The single appeared on his 2022 EP, Jupiter’s Diary: 7 Day Theory (EP)TnTXD and trillgotjuice produced it. Besides the additional music added by the producer, a sample fuels the fire.  What’s interesting is the fact that it’s not an old-school sample but another 2022 song, “Love Me More” by Sam Smith.  Rod lets the beat ride before joining the party.  Ultimately, the sound is characteristic of him – firmly planted in his comfort zone.  As always, he delivers a sweet melodic rap flow with trap sensibilities (“I don’t want no broke friends ‘cause I’m larger than a bitch (Larger) / Don’t want no rap friends, ‘cause they be flawer than a bitch”).  The sweetest moments hail from the memorable chorus.

“I said, ‘Girl, where you going?’ (Where you going, love?)

You can’t stay a little while longer?’ (Why you going, love?)

The real from the fake and the fake from the flawed (And the fake)

Gettin’ harder to tell ‘em apart (Apart)

And it breaks my heart, (My heart), and it breaks my heart.”

“Break My Heart” is enjoyable and well-rounded.

7. Vivian Green, “I’m Not Broken”

Vivid // Make Noise // 2015

Vivian Green, Vivid [📷: Make Noise]“(You didn’t break my heart) / You just bent it (You just bent it) / And there’s no damage (there’s no damage) / It’s Like it never happened (never happened) / I’m not broken, broken, broken, broken.” Vivian Green has had a bad experience with a particular ex, as the lyrics from the chorus of her 2015 song, “I’m Not Broken”, detail.  Before the chorus, Green gives examples of his trifling ways:  “He’d say one and one is three / And expect me to believe it / Lying like you never seen / While looking dead at me.” Woo! This gem from 💿 Vivid isn’t sad, however – it doesn’t find this underappreciated and underrated R&B artist ‘down and out.’ Instead, she’s resolute, and shows incredible resolve through her ‘heart bend’ as opposed to ‘heartbreak.’  After previously being caught up in this perceived love, she’s like Johnny Nash – she can “see clearly now”.

“When you walk away

You know exactly what it was

Your vision’s no longer cloudy

(You’re off the love drug)…”

Viv is able and fully committed to the rebound.  She’s learned a love lesson and survived it! Here songwriting alongside Kwamé Holland is on-point, as is the production (Holland), which gives Green a background contemporary yet also firmly planted in neo-soul/adult contemporary R&B. If you’ve experienced bad love and need a lift, look no further than Viv’s awesome, “I’m Not Broken”.

8. BRONZE AVERY, “SPRING BREAK”

HEATWAVE// BRONZE AVERY // 2024

BRONZE AVERY, HEATWAVE [📷: BRONZE AVERY]“I’ve been counting the days / Til I take, take you / Take you all the way.” Ooh-la-la, BRONZE AVERY! Before that assertion, in “SPRING BREAK”, a single from his album, HEATWAVE, the handsome, talented pop artist makes it clear, “All roads are leading to me at the start.” What is clear from the start of “Spring Break” is that it is a surefire vibe that not only ushers in the spring – beachy, poolside vibe – but also hints at the possibilities for some sweet S meets E and then they X. AVERY wrote and produced this groovy, carefree spring gem. Dancing is highly encouraged! However, it’s more than dancing that’s encouraged! In the second verse, he sings, “Take off your top like it’s boys gone wild / Steady and doing it with a smile.” If you’ve got, then you should flaunt it, right? DAMN RIGHT! And we can’t stop staring at BRONZE AVERY, topless on the single cover artwork… Just saying 😍! Of course, we’re most enamored by his musical talent. The crème de la crème, as to be expected, is the chorus.  Avery sings, “The clock is ticking / I need a Spring break / My body’s melting / Escape to the rave / Don’t care ‘bout anything / I just wanna feel the sun / Spring break.” Need the perfect song for your spring endeavors? Look no further than “SPRING BREAK”!

9. Emi Larraud, “Sex, Break, Down!”

“Sex, Break, Down” // E.L. // 2023

Emi Larraud, Sex, Break, Down! [📷: E.L.]“Your touch kills me like amphetamines / Your hands burn me up like gasoline / I want it all but I can’t have you.” Damn! Emi Larraud is the man – a young man at that! The talented Gen-Z musician, originally from Madrid and based in NYC, records some ear-catching tracks. “Sex, Break, Down!” released in 2023, is a prime example of Emi hard at work. What better way to kick things off than orgasmic sounds? Honestly, his moans make you feel some type of way 😈! And as the lyrical excerpts suggest, the desire is, um, deadly 😵! “Sex, Break, Down!” features marvelous, ornate production work.  Check out Larraud’s music and lavish production that ‘goes with the territory.’ The inspiration – the fuel for the fire – is on full display. Beyond the instrumental, Emi delivers strong, passionate vocals.  Adding to the allure are incredibly tuneful melodies. “Baby I want you / I don’t wanna come down,” he sings, passionately, continuing, “I wanna love you / I don’t wanna break down / I’ve had enough of all the pain I can’t run from.” Woo! This shit is getting personal! One other note of the must-hear greatness that is “Sex, Break, Down!”. It features some pitch-shifted vocals performing select French phrases. Now that’s sexy! Je t’adore, Emi Larraud!

10. MKSM, “Breaking My Rules”

“Breaking My Rules” // Milch Musik // 2023

MKSM, Breaking My Rules [📷: Milch Musik]“Out on a date just to follow my dirty mind…” WOO! Berlin-based, openly gay repatriate MKSM (Maksim) is giving NSA on his single “Breaking My Rules”. Early in this sexy song about a boy he is changing his perspective on romance versus sex. We can gather that MKSM is typically a hopeless romantic seeking love.  But, instead, he’s changing course this time around: “Crossing my line thinking it’ll all turn out right.” MKSM is incredibly relatable in his pursuit of affection, whether that is the empty sex touted here or perhaps what he truly wants deep down inside: a committed relationship.  He doesn’t want to hurt anybody, admittedly, “But I love the fact that you want me.” Being wanted makes anybody feel good, even if that person is or isn’t the right one for us.  This being wanted draws the talented singer back into potential feelings, something he’s trying to rein in.  With the feels out of it, he makes it clear, “I don’t want someone to hold my hand / Boy, I just want you to understand / I know I’m breaking my rules, I’m breaking my rules tonight.” With gay men, friends with benefits and meaningless hookups aren’t far-fetched.  Those experiences are easy ones.  However, when feelings come into play, developing a meaningful relationship is far more complicated to navigate.  The slickly produced “Breaking My Rules” does a fine job of titillating with its sensual vibes while debating something more substantial beyond fooling around.

11. Kirk Franklin, “Brokenhearted”

Hero // Zomba Gospel LLC // 2005

Kirk Franklin, Hero [📷: Zomba Gospel LLC]“Come ye, brokenhearted / Come ye, weary soul / There is healing water / That can make you whole.” What encouraging and hopeful lyrics Kirk Franklin penned on his 2005 gem, “Brokenhearted”. “Brokenhearted” is the 11th track from his Grammy-winning, platinum-certified album Hero. Notably, on the encouraging, thoughtful, and uplifting-penned number, Franklin tapped the anointed Marvin L. Winans.  Franklin himself is the encourager and minister, while the choir sings warm, reverent vocals with incredible authenticity. The robust, churchy organ sets the tone of “Brokenhearted.” Before Marvin L. Winans enters the mix, the choir continues to testify to the wholeness that God can create.  “Come bring tears of sorrow / Come bring years of pain,” they assert in the second verse, adding in the bridge, “And it flows from the veins of Jesus my savior / My healer and redeemer / My lover so true / It has power to heal / All our sin-sick diseases / So come to the throne / Your healing is here.” Amen! Winans enters the mix during the vamp, bringing superb, spiritual vocals.  He begins poised, relatively slow, eventually picking up steam. His riffs ooze with soul, supported by the dynamic vocals of the choir. Things ‘kick up a notch’ when the choir sings, “Joy is here,” with Winans touting “unspeakable joy.” The choir continues to cycle through the greatness of God (grace and love). “Brokenhearted” remains a powerful and timeless Kirk Franklin classic. It exemplifies a musical blessing.

12. Toni Braxton, “Un-Break My Heart”

Secrets // LaFace // 1996

Toni Braxton, Secrets [📷: LaFace]“Don’t leave me in all this pain,” Toni Braxton sings in the first verse of her adult contemporary R&B classic, “Un-Break My Heart”. She adds, “Bring back those nights when I held you beside me.” Heartbreak plagued a young Braxton back in 1996.  “Un-Break My Heart,” the biggest hit of her career, was a dominant no. 1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100, crowning the charts for 11 weeks. A platinum-certified single, “Un-Break My Heart” earned Braxton one of her seven Grammys – Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. Parent album, Secrets, it’s been certified octuple platinum. There are a plethora of reasons why “Un-Break My Heart” is a timeless classic.  The distinct, expressive, and husky voice of Braxton shines. The richness of her instrument is perfect for capturing the ‘love pain.’  “Come and kiss the pain away,” she sings in the second verse, “I can’t forget the day you left.” Sad. While Toni brings those sad lyrics and melodies to life, iconic songwriter Diane Warren penned this masterpiece.  The best moment comes in the tuneful chorus:

“Un-break my heart

Say you’ll love me again

Undo this hurt you caused

When you walked out the door

And walked out of my life

Un-cry these tears

I cried so many nights

Un-break my heart

My heart.”

Also, credit producer David Foster who crafts an ultra-classy, refined backdrop for Braxton. “Un-Break My Heart” is a once-in-a-lifetime record.

13. Chicago, “Hard Habit To Break”

Chicago 17 // Warner // 1984

Chicago, Chicago 17 [📷: Warner]I’m addicted to you, babe / You’re a hard habit to break.” Chicago – what a band, what a band, what a band! The Grammy-winning rock band, formed in Chicago, Illinois, has no shortage of pop hits.  In 1984, they struck gold again with “Hard Habit To Break”, the third track on Chicago 17John Parker and Stephen Kipner wrote the adult contemporary/soft rock song while David Foster produced it. “Hard Habit To Break” was nominated for two Grammys at the 27th Annual Grammy Awards: Record Of The Year and Best Pop Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocals. Despite taking an “L” at the Grammy Awards, it peaked at no. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Peter Cetera and Bill Champlin share lead vocal duties on “Hard Habit To Break.” Cetera leads the charge in the first and third verses and chorus (“You don’t know what you got / Until it’s gone / And I found out / A little too late”).  Champlin takes the reins on the second and fourth verses (“But deep in the night / It’s an endless fight / I can’t get you out of my mind”).  Cetera and Champlin both perform the bridge (“I can’t go one (Can’t go on)”).  Besides their respective lead moments, the band sings selectively during the centerpiece, the chorus:

“Now being without you

Takes a lot of getting used to

Should learn to live with it

But I don’t want to

Being without you

It’s all a big mistake

Instead of getting easier

It’s the hardest thing to take

I’m addicted to you, babe

You’re a hard habit to break.”

Matters of the heart drive the theme.  That is always a recipe for success.  Another recipe for success is the refined, soft rock/pop backdrop.  The electric keys and synth elements make “Hard Habit To Break” a far cry from, say, “25 or 6 To 4”. There are still plenty of rock elements, with the guitars sounding quite ripe during the big, anthemic chorus.  As the song progresses, the accompaniment becomes more dynamic, adding instrumentation. The horns, a key part of Chicago’s sound, remain intact. Another reason why this top-five hit is epic? An adventurous harmonic progression with modulations. “Hard Habit To Break” is an addicting 80s rock gem, period!
