It seems like rapper 🎙 Rod Wave exemplifies the phrase, “no days off.”  He’s incredibly prolific, year after year.  Furthermore, he’s quite popular and knows how to top the charts.  In 2022, he’s already dropped an album, 💿 Beautiful Mind, which debuted at – you guessed it – no. 1 on the Billboard 200.  Wave returns with a new single, 🎵 “Break My Heart”, where you could say, he continues to successfully ride the wave! “Break My Heart” appears on Wave’s new EP, 💿 Jupiter’s Diary: 7 Day Theory (EP)

Besides the additional music added by the producer, a sample fuels the fire for Rod Wave.  What’s interesting is the fact that it’s not an old-school sample but rather, another 2022 song, 🎵 “Love Me More” by the 🏆 highly decorated 🎙 Sam Smith. Given that source material,  “Break My Heart” gets in no rush to set up; Rod lets the beat ride before joining the party.  Ultimately, the sound of the record is characteristic of him.  It’s firmly planted in his comfort zone, which, there’s nothing wrong with that – it’s highly successful at this point.  As always, he delivers a sweet melodic rap flow, with trap sensibilities (“I don’t want no broke friends ’cause I’m larger than a bitch (Larger) / Don’t want no rap friends, ‘cause they be flawer than a bitch”).  The sweetest moments hail from the memorable chorus.

“I said, ‘Girl, where you going?’ (Where you going, love?)

You can’t stay a little while longer?’ (Why you going, love?)

The real from the fake and the fake from the flawed (And the fake)

Gettin’ harder to tell ‘em apart (Apart)

And it breaks my heart, (My heart), and it breaks my heart.”

Final Thoughts 💭

fire sunglassesAll in all, 🎵 “Break My Heart” marks another win for Rod Wave who seems unstoppable.  The single isn’t particularly innovative per se but it’s enjoyable and well-rounded.  Wave seems to connect with lots of folks and there’s no doubt in my mind that his most dedicated fans are onboard with him with “Break My Heart” as well.
