1. Charlie Puth, “Beat Yourself Up”

Whatever’s Clever! » Atlantic Records Group LLC » 2026

Charlie Puth, Whatever's Clever! [📷: Atlantic Records Group LLC]

“Since you were a boy, you took the weight of the world / And held onto it ‘til you fell to the ground.”
That is heavy, Charlie Puth. Our adorkable, perfect-pitched pop singer, songwriter, and producer clarifies why this person took on this weight.  “You did it for your little girl,” he sings, “So she would never feel the way you do now.” Word.  Charlie’s advice: DON’T “Beat Yourself Up”.  Puth penned the thoughtful second single from Whatever’s Clever! and produced it alongside BloodPop®.  The sound of the record is a big selling point, with bright, energetic horn (saxophone, trumpets, and trombone) riffs, rhythm section and programming, and strings.  “Beat Yourself Up” is grand.

With an epic groove and an active, slapped bass line, the warm and inviting musical backdrop sets up Charlie Puth for success. The ornate nature is a selling point.  As for Charlie’s voice, it is beautiful, as always.  Puth is no powerhouse, but he knows how to use his lighter sets of pipes effectively and efficiently.  He packs the right amount of punch throughout “Beat Yourself Up.” He brings the tuneful melodies to life, particularly during the most memorable section of the song, the chorus:

“Please don’t beat yourself up, oh, whatever you do

‘Cause that doesn’t do nothin’, but just break you in two

Please don’t beat yourself up, though you made some mistakes

But you know it means somethin’ when you’ll live one more day.”

All in all, “Beat Yourself Up” is another pleasant, well-rounded single from Whatever’s Clever!.

2. Lizzo, “YITTY ON YO TITTYS (FREESTYLE)”

MY FACE HURTS FROM SMILING » Nice Life Recording Company / Atlantic Recording Corporation » 2025

Lizzo, MY FACE HURTS FROM SMILING [📷: Nice Life Recording Company / Atlantic Recording Corporation]At the end of June 2025, Grammy-winning rapper/singer/songwriter/flautist Lizzo (Melissa Jefferson) dropped a surprise mixtape, MY FACE HURTS FROM SMILING.  Amazingly, MY FACE HURTS FROM SMILING was recorded in only three days. Rather than focus on pop, she showed off her bad bitch side, rapping rather than singing for the most part. Among the songs on the project that catches the ears the most, if for no other reason than its title, is “YITTY ON YO TITTYS (FREESTYLE)”. “YITTY” finds Lizzo talking her shit. With a sweet, minor-key trap backdrop produced by prxdbyjai, One Play Mike, and Zaytoven, ‘Lizzy’ goes in. Worth noting, “YITTY” samples “WHIM WHAMIEE” by PLUTO and YKNIECE. “Bitch, it’s Lizzo, call me Lizzy / I been fat and I been skinny, bitches still ain’t fuckin’ with me,” she bites in the chorus, adding, “Bitch, it’s summer, we outside, put some Yitty on your titties (we outside, ho).” In case you were confused about the swimwear she’s promoting, it is called YITTY (by Fabletics). She mentions her weight throughout, including the recurring lyric from the chorus, as well as the likes of, “Nigga wanna smash real bad, this nigga burnt out (He burnt out) / Never fucked a big bitch before, I got him turnt out.” Ultimately, “YITTY ON YO TITTYS (FREESTYLE)” is an enjoyable record without being game changing or transcendent.

3. Roger, “I Want to Be Your Man”

Unlimited! » Reprise » 1987

Roger, Unlimited! [📷: Reprise]

“Hey lady, let me tell you why / I can’t live my life without you (Aw baby).”
Roger (Roger Troutman, 1951 – 1999) was a talented and influential musician. He was renowned for his use of the talk box, creating intriguing, unique vocal effects. Sadly, Troutman was the victim of an infamous murder-suicide by his older brother, Larry Troutman, in 1999 😢. Roger is best known for his hit, “I Want to Be Your Man”, which is the opening track from his 1987 album, Unlimited!. Interestingly, Roger and Larry penned the hit, which peaked at number three on the Billboard Hot 100.  This marked his highest charting hit as a solo artist or otherwise. Even with his contributions to the influential, successful funk band Zapp, the impact was modest on the pop charts. Roger is a one-hit wonder, but it just doesn’t feel right.  Pop chart success or lack thereof aside, Troutman ate and left no crumbs on “I Want to Be Your Man.”

“Better not pass me by, ‘cause if you do, you’ll / Lose a good thing (Oh baby),”
Roger sings in the second verse, and continues, “‘Cause what I got to say is sealed with a kiss / And a wedding ring (Wedding ring).” Oh, snap! It’s giving matrimony! “I Want To Be Your Man” sounds bright, enthusiastic, and warm. Happy to the nth degree, fittingly, it is set in a major key. The sounds are electric, rather, electronic! Sweet synths, smooth, rhythmic guitars, pronounced bass, and a groove that sits right in the pocket make the musical backdrop a surefire vibe. Roger has ample fuel for his talk box-driven fire.  His vocals are gorgeous, amplified by the striking effects created by the talk box. It is the lushness of his instrument that stands out.  He also gets superb support from backing vocals.  With tuneful melodies throughout the song, and dedicated lyrics, the simple but memorable chorus is the crowning achievement:  “I want to be your man (I wanna be your man) / I want to be your man (Yes I do, yeah-yeah).” Ultimately, “I Want to Be Your Man” is awesome.  Sure, it’s ‘80s to the core in its sound, but this classic still shines well into the 21st century.

4.Saja Boys, Andrew Choi, Neckwav, Danny Chung, KEVIN WOO, samUIL Lee, KPop Demon Hunters Cast, “Your Idol”

KPop Demon Hunters (Soundtrack from the Netflix Film) » Visva Records / Republic Records » 2025

KPop Demon Hunters (Soundtrack from the Netflix film) [📷: Republic]

“Dies irae illa… / Vos solve in favilla… / Maledictus erus… / In flames aeternum… / I’ll be your idol.”
Ah, Dies Irae – day of wrath! With portions of the Latin hymn from the Catholic mass (with modifications), the end of the intro of “Your Idol” is more hellish than heavenly (“I’ll be your idol”).  In Exodus 20: 3-6, God forbids false idols: 3 You shall have no other gods before me. Saja Boys, Andrew Choi, Neckwav, Danny Chung, KEVIN WOO, samUIL Lee, and the KPop Demon Hunters Cast don’t seem concerned about false idolatry on the banging seventh track from the platinum-certified KPop Demon Hunters (Soundtrack from the Netflix Film). Notably, it is starkly different from Saja Boys’ other big moment from the film/soundtrack, “Soda Pop”. One of many successful songs, “Your Idol,” peaked at number four on the Billboard Hot 100 and was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America. EJAE, Mark Sonnenblick, Vince (KOR), KUSH (쿠시), 24, and IDO (KOR) composed it. 24, IDO (KOR), and Ian Eisendrath produced it.

“Your Idol” is set in a minor key.  It commences dramatically with a cinematic sound. That’s fitting – it is a song from a children’s movie soundtrack, after all!  Following the bold, distinct choral harmonies (intentional), “Your Idol” settles into a contemporary pop record.  While this contemporary pop record hails from a soundtrack, it’s also a fun, infectious, standalone gem. “Your Idol” thrives on tuneful, rhythmic melodies and its unforgettable lyrics. Those unforgettable lyrics are… idol-driven. “Know I’m the only one right now (Now) / I will love you more when it all burns down,” Mystery sings in the first verse, while Romance adds, “More than power (Uh), more than gold (Yeah) / Yeah, you gave me your heart, now I’m here for your soul.” A compelling rap appears in the second verse, providing contrast. Romance drops another banger of a lyric in the second verse: “Your obsession feeds our connection / 이 순간 give me all your attention.” In the pre-chorus, Jinu memorably sings: “You know I’m the only one who’ll love your sins / Feel the way my voice gets underneath your skin.” Oh, shit shiitake mushrooms 🍄! The chorus is the crème de la crème:

“Listen ‘cause I’m preachin’ to the choir

Can I get the mic a little higher?

Gimme your desire

I can be the star you rely on

내 황홀에 취해, you can’t look away

Don’t you know I’m here to save you?

Now we runnin’ wild

Yeah, I’m all you need, I’ma be your idol.”

Even though “Your Idol” is not “Golden”, the biggest song from the soundtrack, and is much darker than “Soda Pop”, it marks another K-pop banger. The performance, sound, and vibe are #GIVING, NO CAP!

5. Artemas, “control yourself”

getting up to no good » Artemas » 2026

Artemas, getting up to no good [📷: Artemas]

“Caroline / Do you like when I say your name?”
Well, do you, Caroline? Artemas (Artemas Diamandis) seems to be referencing the song “Caroline” from his 2024 mixtape, yustyna.  In that song, Mr. Diamandis asserts, “Caroline, you should break up with your girl / For the night, let me fucking rock your world.” On “control yourself”, the 12th and final track from his 2026 tape, getting up to no good, Caroline seems to be enticing Artemas, ferociously.  “You know what you’re doing with that tight dress on / Pressed against your body with no panties on,” he sings in the pre-chorus, and continues, “Started breathing on me, and it felt so wrong / Started touching on me, and it felt so wrong.” Holy fuck feels like an appropriate reaction… Anyway, Artemas wrote and produced this naughty pop cut.

“Control yourself” commences enigmatically.  Notably, the sound of musical accompaniment is brighter than usual… or at least, less dark for an Artemas song.  Still, Diamandis gets it in, as evidenced by the pre-chorus.  Even thinking with his pants, Artemas sings beautifully, incredibly enthusiastic, infuses plenty of personality, and packs more punch than usual.  Also, the musical accompaniment is vibrant.  Still, it is his sexual endeavors that capture our attention most.  In the second verse, Artemas admits he “broke my girl’s heart for a taste.”  Making matters worse, his girlfriend doesn’t know it… I guess until she hears the song 😏.  But Diamandis can’t avoid her and yield not to temptation!  Instead, per the pre-chorus, “Baby, when I’m with you, can’t control myself / If I don’t get to fuck you, won’t forgive myself.”  See, I told you holy fuck was an appropriate reaction… maybe it’s more of an unholy fuck to be honest… In the chorus, the centerpiece, Artemas, continues to be honest about his horniness.  Seems like Caroline is a baddie!

“But I don’t even know you, girl, control yourself

I’m tryin’ not to give in, but I know myself

I know I shouldn’t trust you, but I want to

Yeah, I want to, and I want you.”

Artemas should’ve avoided Caroline like the plague, at least in his personal life.  In terms of the song “control yourself”, however, it’s hard not to eat up the sexy sugar, honey, iced tea he continues to serve up.

6. Fantasia, “Have Your Way”

“Have Your Way” » gamma. » 2025

Fantasia, Have Your Way [📷: gamma.]

“Lord, I come to You, as humble as I know how / Asking You Father, please / Forgive me of my sins now.”
Grammy-winning R&B, gospel singer, and actress Fantasia petitions to the right One – the One and only, God. Fantasia, renowned for her anointed and distinct voice, ‘takes us to church’ on her contemporary gospel single, “Have Your Way”. “Have Your Way” was written by her brother, Ricco Barrino, and produced by Brandon Jones and Brad Moody. If you need a serious lift, greater than chest or leg day, look no further than the moving “Have Your Way.”

Fantasia admits, “I know that I let the ways of the world distract me, but I’m in now.” Amen. It is easy to be drawn in and wooed by secular things, but those secular things can’t and won’t supplant a merciful, omniscient God.  Hence, ‘Tasia is leaning into Him, best evidenced by the chorus:

“So now, Lord, I’m singing

(Have Your way)

We cry out You care

(Have Your way)

Have Your way in us, Lord

(Have Your way)

Come on, everybody cry out

(Have Your way).”

Hallelujah! Fantasia is supported by superb choral vocals that emphasize the titular lyric in all of its glory. In the second verse, Fantasia continues to speak to her needs.  “Father, I come to You, no other help I know / I swear, I’m lost without You / Need me to cleanse my soul.” How many of us have experienced being lost and need the same thing – cleansing, healing, restoration?  “I need You to lift me up / I need You to cleanse, cleanse my soul,” she sings, digging in more, “And from the highest mountain, please, please.” She encourages everyone to cry out, to petition the Lord for help, and to have His way.  By this point, Fantasia’s voice soars, with epic ad-libs and riffs.  The choir takes things higher, reaching for the heights of heaven! By the end of “Have Your Way,” a ‘filled up’ Fantasia transitions into “Sanctus (Holy, Holy, Holy),” which is a beautiful, reverent touch. Ultimately, “Have Your Way” is a powerful testament of faith. Notably, Fantasia gave a moving performance of this petition to the Lord on American Idol on April 28, 2025. As always, her voice was dynamic, gritty, and soulful to the nth degree. She took us to church.  To reiterate, if you need a lift, look no further than this magnificent gospel record.

7. Tyler, The Creator, “Take Your Mask Off”

CHROMAKOPIA » Columbia » 2024

Tyler, The Creator, Chromakopia [📷: Columbia]

“I hope you find yourself / And I hope you find yourself / And I hope you take your mask off.”
Say that, Tyler, The Creator (and Daniel Caesar, too)! “Take Your Mask Off” has a hard act to follow in the context of CHROMAKOPIA. “Sticky”, in all its glory, precedes it (“Better find a mop it’s getting sticky in this bitch”). “Sticky” is a showstopper, but “Take Your Mask Off” is formidable in its own right. It has a deep and thoughtful message, as well as a tuneful, memorable chorus. The Grammy-winning rapper helms the production, delivering a lush, jazzy, and soulful backdrop.  “Take Your Mask Off” samples multiple elements of the 1976 song, “A Feeling Inside” (People’s Pleasure), and, more familiarly, vocals and lyrics from “So Anxious” (Ginuwine). In addition to Caesar’s Grammy-winning pipes, LaToiya Williams is also credited as a featured guest.

Tyler, The Creator delivers a compelling cadence and flow throughout “Take Your Mask Off.” He’s smooth yet never backs off real talk.  In the first verse, “a good kid, fine home, mom and did in the pic’” doesn’t “wanna be seen as a bitch.” So, what does he do? Gets involved in a gang, although he’s not a thug and doesn’t come from that background. “But now cuz gettin’ validation from the dumb and confused,” Tyler raps at the end of the verse, continuing, “Now you’re facin’ five to ten ‘cause you had somethin’ to prove, let’s talk about it.” In the second verse, Tyler tackles false prophets: “Preacher man, preacher man, preach (Woo) / You make these folks think you got somethin’ to teach, like you ain’t lyin’.” Yes, Tyler is an atheist, but, he assertions aren’t far-fetched, as he criticizes clergy for treatment of gays, and mentions their extracurricular activities… with boys (“But you back on that religious shit as soon as you cum, let’s talk about it”). Hiding behind a mask, again. There is a unique interlude by Bonita Smith (Tyler’s mom) that precedes the fourth verse: “Keep that shit one hundred with you, with yourself…” A change of pace occurs during the fourth verse, arguably the most accomplished. In several instances, Tyler speaks on the consequences of not taking the mask off: “Better sit the fuck down or that skull gettin’ took,” “You ain’t gotta hide from the truth,” and, most memorably, “Now go stand in the sun, use some fake tears to water your roots / Take the mask off and tell ‘em the truth.” “Take Your Mask Off” marks another accomplished moment from CHROMAKOPIA as well as Tyler, The Creator’s riveting music catalog.

8. SuS Records, “Your Dick Is Way Too Big”

“Your Dick Is Way Too Big” » James Werner » 2025

SuS Records, Your Dick Is Way Too Big [📷: James Werner]

“You came back knockin’ on my backdoor / I told ya I don’t wanna see you anymore.”
Bummer! Backdoor, huh? It’s giving 🍑… The reason why she won’t allow ole boy back might surprise you, however.  According to SuS Records, simply put, “Your Dick Is Way Too Big” 😳.  So, for all of you size queens out there, in this instance, he’s packing too much! Another AI artist catching ears with outlandish and unapologetic music, Sus Records claims to be bringing back the songs that never were. Yup, I have no doubt this one never existed… In this self-described banned 1940s song, in a dirty blues/jazz style, the fit is not ideal.

Characteristic of dirty blues, the singer, Ms. Wilma Fingerdoo 😏, is accompanied by piano. She delivers assertive, dynamic, and robust vocals.  The lyrics are NOT SAFE WORK.  Outlandish, she’s brutally honest about the fact that he can’t fit.

“Your dick’s way too big, it’s never gonna fit

Your dick’s way too big, it’s gonna make me split

It’s not fitting in my mouth or in my back door

Your dick’s too big, so I can’t see you no more.”

Too much information, and yet, our dirty minds picture every filthy lyric.  By the way, that backdoor reference is clarified… 🍑.  Fingerdoo provides more eyebrow-raising moments.  In the second verse, she states, “You have a cock as big as two or three guys.” Hmm, I have questions… The bridge raises even more questions. “But the first six inches is only the tip,” she sings, and continues, “If you put the whole thing in, I’d have a heart attack / You’re the one who’s taller, lyin’ on their back.”Say what now?! A six-inch tip? If that is indeed the case, Wilma knows exactly what she’s talking about.  The risks for injury would be greatly increased given the massive size of such a D… Ultimately, Wilma Fingerdoo, SuS Records, and “Your Dick Is Way Too Big” should all be taken with an itty bitty grain of salt.

9. Stella Novella, “Your Dad”

“Your Dad” » MSTR FISH MUSIC » 2025

Stella Novella, Your Dad [📷: MSTR FISH MUSIC]

“I’m tired of drag (uh) / I’m tired of cunt (what) / I’m tired of work (so tired) / I know what I want.”
D-d-damn, Stella Novella (Charlie Fish)! What do you want, Stella? Fun, and… “Your Dad”.  Specifically, our drag queen extraordinaire asserts, “I just wanna fuck your dad.” Woo! The Dominican American drag queen doesn’t fuck around on “Your Dad.” Well, technically, they do: “I just wanna fuck your dad / Fuck your son / Fuck your man / Fuck everyone.” Oop! Fish penned “Your Dad” with producer Keenan Copas.

The sound provides Stella Novella quite a lift.  The production is sleek with incredible synths and a banging beat.  Later, gorgeous, dizzying synths and warm piano chords provide contrast.  “Your Dad” is set in a minor key, and much of the song finds Stella performing with playful, unapologetic, and talk-sung vocals.  How exactly does Stella describe your dad? “Your daddy is fit / His wallet is thick / I make him cum quick,” they rap in the second verse.  Stella continues, “Your son is obsessed / He says I’m the best / When I leave him, I leave him depressed (Sorry, Kevin, I have to bounce).” And again, I oop! I mean, Stella did state, they fuck everyone…  There is a change of pace before the two-minute mark, signally the bridge. Here, Ms. Norvella gives us more pitched, warm vocals. “Take off my wig, dress, lashes, and heels / How does it feel? Tell me how do I feel?” they assert, and add, “I’m dressed and ready for you / By the end of the song, you’ll be bouncing all night long.” Ooh, bouncing, huh? Gah-day-um Stella! “Your Dad” does a fine job of keeping the listener on their toes with timbral contrasts, reincorporating previous sections, and with Stella Norvella exhibiting plenty of personality. Bold, “Your Dad” is a surefire vibe – the cat’s meow! And, honestly, can we blame Stella for wanting to do Daddy?

10. Sade, “By Your Side”

Lovers Rock » Sony Music Entertainment UK Limited » 2000

Sade, Lovers Rock [📷: Sony Music Entertainment UK Limited]

“You think I’d leave your side, baby / You know me better than that.”
The dedication is legit on “By Your Side”, the lead single and opening track from Lovers Rock. Lovers Rock marked the fifth studio album by Grammy-winning, British R&B band Sade, led by vocalist extraordinaire Sade Adu (1959 – ). “By Your Side,” which was nominated for a Grammy for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, was a modest hit on the pop charts (number 75 on the Billboard Hot 100). It performed better on the R&B charts, just missing the top 40. Regardless of the chart numbers, “By Your Side” is easily one of Sade’s better/most notable songs. Adu and fellow band members, Paul Spencer Denman, Stuart Matthewman, and Andrew Hale, wrote “By Your Side.” Sade and Mike Pela produced it.

“By Your Side” is groovy from the get-go. The band is locked in on this buttery smooth, mid-tempo ballad. Following the tone-setting instrumental intro, Sade shows off her expressive, nuanced vocals. Never getting too high and maintaining a cool energy, Adu brings the tuneful melodies to life. Beyond exceptional lead vocals, there are radiant, selectively harmonized vocal moments that up the ante, accentuate the vibe. The chorus shines as Sade asserts, “Oh, when you’re cold, I’ll be there / Hold you tight to me / Oh, when you’re low / I’ll be there by your side, baby.” Equally, if not more epic, the bridge expands the instrumentation and brings some of the most memorable melodies and lyrics: “And if you want to cry / I am here to dry your eyes / And in no time, you’ll be fine.” Sweet, sweet, sweet! “By Your Side” deserved to be a bigger hit.  Sade lovers know it is the bomb dot com.  Notably, Amsterdam-based queer R&B artist Stemin covered this 2000s gem.

11. Con Funk Shun, “Baby I’m Hooked (Right Into Your Love)”

Fever » UMG Recordings, Inc. » 1983

Con Funk Shun, Fever [📷: UMG Recordings, Inc.]Does the R&B and funk band Con Funk Shun get enough love? No, but the group, featuring the talents of Michael Cooper and Felton Pilate, released a marvelous catalog of music. Among their best songs is “Baby I’m Hooked (Right Into Your Love)”, which arrived in the later part of the prime of their career. “Baby I’m Hooked (Right Into Your Love)” is the third track from their 1983 album, Fever. Cedric Martin and Van Ross Redding wrote it, while Deodato is consistently listed as a producer.  Others credited as producers include the band, Clarence Scarborough, and sometimes, Ron Capone and Maurice Starr. Deodato and company excelled behind the boards, PERIOD. While not a massive pop hit for the collective, “Hooked” peaked at number 76 on the Billboard Hot 100.  More successful on the R&B charts, it peaked at number five.

“Baby I’m Hooked (Right Into Your Love)” exemplifies the 1980s refined, smooth, and more electronic-leaning R&B sound.  The groove is sickening.  The keyboards and programming add a sleekness, adapting and modernizing Con Funk Shun’s sound (not that they needed to). The robust bass line and guitar accompaniment are both S-W-double E-T.  Throw in strings, and the ambience of the musical backdrop is ‘to die for.’ The vocals are ‘to die for’ as well, particularly the masterful falsetto by Felton Pilate.  When the collective sings, well, collectively, the results are sweet, romantic-sounding, and incredibly warm. The chorus is the centerpiece:

“Baby, I’m hooked right into your love
Are you ready for mine?
Look what I got
Good loving so hot.”

Beyond the chorus, the other sections are sensational, too, capturing L-O-V-E superbly: “Ooh, there are no words that / Can express the way I feel now / And I want you to know.” There is also the pre-chorus or bridge (of sorts), where the need is emphasized: “I need you (I need you) / In my life (In my life) / I need you baby.” Word! “Baby I’m Hooked (Right Into Your Love)” marked the collective’s last significant pop hit of the ‘80s. It is an enduring one.  High-flying vocals, memorable theme and lyrics, and well-rounded, classy production make this a surefire winner.

12. Isaac Hayes, “Do Your Thing”

Shaft » Concord Music Group Inc. » 1971

Isaac Hayes, Shaft [📷: Concord Music Group Inc.]

“If the music make you move / ‘Cause you can dig the groove / Then groove on, groove on.”
Say that, Isaac Hayes (1942 – 2008)! Those groovy lyrics hail from Hayes’ classic, “Do Your Thing”. In its extended form, this funked-up joint, which runs nineteen and a half minutes, is the 14th track from Hayes’ 1971 album, Shaft.  The single version, which ultimately peaked at number 30 on the Billboard Hot 100, runs under three and a half minutes. The single version has appeared on multiple compilations, including Ultimate Isaac Hayes: Can You Dig It? (2015) and Stax Records Presents (2024). In the extended version, beyond the vocal portion, the band has an extended jam session, which is a surefire V-I-B-E. Hayes wrote and produced this glorious soul gem. “‘Cause whatever you do / Oh, you’ve got to do your thing.” Couldn’t say it better myself, Isaac!

Throughout “Do Your Thing,” Hayes encourages us to do just that – do your thing! What things specifically, Isaac? Make love (“love on”), say something (“Rap on”), scream (“Scream on”), sing (“Sing on”), and make love all night (“Right on”). I’m digging the latter! With his sexy, soulful voice, anything that Hayes encourages you to do, you’re going to do it, without a doubt! Beyond the tuneful melodies, memorable lyrics, and buttery smooth baritone vocals, the musical accompaniment is heavenly.  The horn orchestration and riffs electrify, idiomatic of the 1970s funk through and through. The rhythm section is tight with the anchoring drums, colorful percussion, and keys (including organ), guitar, and bass, further amplifying the striking listening experience. “Theme From Shaft” was the bigger hit from Shaft, obviously, but “Do Your Thing” marked another triumph from one of soul’s greatest musicians of all time.  This thang never grows old!

13. Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell, “Your Precious Love”

United » UMG Recordings, Inc. » 1967

Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell, United [📷: Motown]

“Oh, oh, oh / Heaven must have sent you from above / Oh, oh, oh / Heaven must have sent your precious love / Oh.”
Those lyrics are both heavenly and iconic! Marvin Gaye (1939 – 1984) and Tammi Terrell (1945 – 1970) made one of the best, most formidable music duos of all time.  Sadly, this great partnership was cut short, given Terrell’s untimely death from brain cancer at just 24 years old. Despite the brevity of their union, Gaye and Terrell recorded some magnificent songs, including the glorious “Your Precious Love”.  “Your Precious Love” appeared as the fifth track on their gold-certified, 1967 album, United.  Another iconic singer-songwriting duo, Ashford & Simpson (Nickolas Ashford, 1941 – 2011, and Valerie Simpson, b. 1946) composed “Your Precious Love.” Harvey Fuqua (1929 – 2010) and Johnny Bristol (1939 – 2004) produced it.  “Your Precious Love” was a big hit on the pop charts, peaking at number five on the Billboard Hot 100.

There is much to love about this duet. It begins with the gorgeous instrumental accompaniment. The way that “Your Precious Love” is mixed stands out.  The guitar riffs are panned to the left, while the piano is panned to the right. Meanwhile, the drums are panned to the left, while the strings are panned to the right. The robust bass line provides a mighty anchor. Throughout, the riffs are nothing short of tuneful. As electrifying as the backdrop is, the vocals by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell steal the show. Gaye draws first blood, touting their love (“Every day, there’s something new… / Honey, to keep me loving you”). Marvin and Tammi get a lift from the background vocals, panned to the right (“Ooh, ooh, ooh, baby,” etc.).  Terrell enters the mix during the sensational chorus, excerpted earlier. She and Gaye have undeniable vocal chemistry – they complement each other like champs!

Terrell takes the reins in the second verse.  Her vocals cut through, proving to be incredibly powerful.  “And you gave me a reason for living,” she sings, and adds, “And, ooh, you taught me, you taught me the meaning of giving.” This formidable duo splits the bridge, with Gaye taking the first half and Terrell putting a cap on it (“Laughter in the eyes where tears used to be”).  Marvin brings more grit to the third verse, informing her, “What you’ve given me, I could never return /… ‘Cause there’s so much, girl, I’ve yet to learn, honey.” Tammi matches his energy: “And I wanna show, I wanna show my appreciation /… ‘Cause when I found you, I found a new inspiration.”  The feels are real on “Your Precious Love”, one of the most enthralling and thrilling duets of the 1960s and, again, all-time.
