Cutting straight to the chase, 13 Electrifying Animal Songs is all about the animals… well, not really! Yes, animals are named in the titles of the 13 songs that appear on this musical compendium but often, the songs are about other stuff.  Sex is a popular topic, for example.  I mean, who doesn’t love sex songs? It’s not all dirtiness and explicitness, though 😉. 13 Electrifying Animal Songs features songs by Billie Eilish, Doechii (twice), Lucille Bogan, Megan Thee Stallion (twice), Shaboozey, and Sufjan Stevens. So, without further ado, let’s embrace the animals, shall we?!

1. Billie Eilish, “BIRDS OF A FEATHER”

HIT ME HARD AND SOFT // Darkroom / Interscope // 2024

Billie Eilish, HIT ME HARD AND SOFT [📷: Darkroom / Interscope]“I want you to stay / ‘Til I’m in the grave / ‘Til I rot away, dead and buried / ‘Til I’m in the casket you carry.” The love that a hypnotic Billie Eilish sings about on “BIRDS OF A FEATHER” is special – once-in-a-lifetime. A more subdued vocalist, Eilish’s approach and style are mesmerizing. On the fourth track from her commercially successful and critically acclaimed third album, HIT ME HARD AND SOFT, Billie never forces things, delivering sweet, easygoing, and amorous vocals.  As usual, her right-hand man, brother, and fellow Grammy and Academy Award winner, FINNEAS (Finneas O’Connell), co-wrote and produced “BIRDS OF A FEATHER.” Ear-catching, “BIRDS” is groovy from the onset and never lets up.

With her angelic lead vocals, Billie Eilish delivers tuneful melodies during the verses and chorus.  Furthermore, she delivers memorable lyrics. “But you’re so full of shit, uh / Tell me it’s a bit,” she sings in the second verse, “Say you don’t see it, your mind’s polluted / Say you wanna quit, don’t be stupid.” The chorus is the section to beat, of course:

“Birds of a feather, we should stick together, I know (‘Til the day that I die)

I said I’d never think I wasn’t better alone (‘Til the light leaves my eyes)

Can’t change the weather, might not be forever (‘Til the day that I die)

But if it’s forever, it’s even better.”

Besides those refined lead vocals, the harmonized background vocals are sweet, too. A big-time hit for Eilish, “BIRDS OF A FEATHER” peaked at no. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100, among her highest-charting singles.  “I don’t think I could love you more.” So, so sweet!

2. Doechii, “BULLFROG”

Alligator Bites Never Heal // Top Dawg Entertainment / Capitol // 2024

Doechii, Alligator Bites Never Heal [📷: Top Dawg Entertainment / Capitol]“Titties sitting up high, Miss Nigga, tough guy / Sipping on Mai Tai, money on a uprise.”  And thus begins “BULLFROG” the second track from Alligator Bites Never Heal, the debut mixtape by Doechii (Jayah Hickmon). “BULLFROG” is brief, running a little over a minute and a half.  Regardless, Doechii slays, kicking ass, and taking names.  She’s accompanied by a hard-hitting beat and ear-catching minimalist production courtesy of Stoic & Mai. Ms. Hickmon is confident and unapologetic with her rhymes, serving up a compelling flow. What are some of the most memorable moments from “BULLFROG?” Why, the frog-related rhymes, of course! See the chorus for some froggy-ness!

“Like a cable, we jump hoes

If a bitch feeling froggy, tell her, ‘Hop out, bitch’

Like a cable, we jump hoes

Twitter fingers get your whole life logged out, bitch.”

Ooh-wee! For good measure, at the end of the second verse, Doechii asserts, “All y’all frog-ass hoes should hop off my –.” Oh, snap! “BULLFROG” is a surefire vibe that Kermit 🐸 can get behind.

3. King Willonius, “They’re Eating The Dogs”

They’re Eating The Dogs” // Delicious Bath Water // 2024

King Willonius, They’re Eating The Dogs [📷: Delicious Bath Water]At the ABC Presidential Debate held on September 10, 2024, former President Donald Trump said a lot of outlandish things.  Baited by Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris, Trump took the bait every time, making for an unhinged yet entertaining television experience.  The most memorable, outlandish, and racist thing Trump uttered was about Haitian immigrants stealing and eating pets – cats and dogs – in Springfield, Ohio. Rightfully, the former POTUS received criticism from everywhere.  Beyond criticism, the memes, reels, shorts, and TikToks have been abundant.  From frightened cats and dogs hearing the ‘fake news,’ to Gen-Z guys dancing to killer songs remixing Trump’s words, the internet has won. King Willonius gets into action via AI (artificial intelligence, if you’re living under a rock) with his soulful, 1970s-sounding single, “They’re Eating The Dogs”. I found myself giggling like a schoolgirl listening to the song. As shocked as everybody was hearing Trump’s unfounded claims about pets being stolen and eaten, AI storyteller, comedian, and showrunner King Willonius captures it perfectly in this two-minute, old-school-sounding gem.  What makes it sound vintage? It’s the biting, articulated horns, the dusty, soulful groove, the piano and guitar riffs, and the prominent bass line.  The vocals rival the big-voiced, gritty soul icons of old, filled with the blues. “They’re eating the dogs /… They’re eating the cats / What the hell goin’ on? / What the hell’s goin’ on? ” That’s about the size of it.  King Willonius captures our show in the most entertaining way possible. “They’re Eating The Dogs” = AI gold.

4. Megan Thee Stallion, “COBRA”

MEGAN // Hot Girl Productions LLC // 2024

Megan Thee Stallion, MEGAN [📷:Hot Girl Productions LLC]“I’m killin’ myself when bitches would die to be me.” Now that’s a mic-drop moment, Megan Thee Stallion.  Produced by Bankroll Got It, Shawn “Source” Jarrett, and Derrick Milano, “Cobra” features intense production, which blends hip-hop and some rock cues. The fuel is there for the fire! Thee Megan’s flow is agile on this standout from MEGAN.  More notable than the flow, however, is what she raps about. Megan opens up about being depressed even though she’s blessed financially (“How can somebody so blessed wanna slit they wrist”).  In the second verse, she continues to reflect on her pain and depression: “Never thought a bitch like me would ever hit rock bottom.” Also, in the same verse, furthering the pain, she “Pulled up, caught him cheatin’, gettin’ his dick sucked in the same spot I’m sleepin’ / Lord, give me a break, I don’t know how much more of this shit I can take.” There’s a lot to take in on the verses, but the chorus embraces that cobra mindset: “This pussy depressed, hmm, I’m about to stress him, yeah / Pink nails ‘round his neck, huh, but this ain’t domestic.” The personal nature of “Cobra” helps to make it incredibly successful.  She doesn’t sacrifice her bite or toughness, but she also shows a more vulnerable side – she has feelings and pain, too, celebrity be damned!

5. Megan Thee Stallion, “BOA”

MEGAN // Hot Girl Productions LLC // 2024

Megan Thee Stallion, MEGAN [📷:Hot Girl Productions LLC]“I be showin’ my ass, they mad, huh? / Bitches is bitter, they thought it was sweet /  All the sudden, they vegan, they don’t want beef / Talkin’ outta veneers, I’m knockin’ out teeth.” From the beginning of “BOA”, Grammy-winning rapper Megan The Stallion comes out swinging. “BOA,” the ninth track from MEGAN, is short but utterly sweet, running just over two-and-a-half minutes. Produced by LilJuMadeDaBeat, the minor-key instrumental is anchored by a banging beat. Thee Stallion eats.  Her flow and bars are aggressive AF.  She gives no fucks, asserting, “Hoes do all of that typin’ / But never once did I get pressed / It’s obvious bitches obsessed / If it’s fuck me, then we havin’ sex (ah).” Boom! The chorus is the section to beat. Notably, “BOA” samples the 2004, Gwen Stefani classic, “What You Waiting For”. Specifically, during the chorus, the famous clock sounds are integrated in (“Tick-tock, tick-tock, tick-tock, tick-tock / These bitches only hot on Tick-tock, tick-tock, tick-tock, tick-tock”). Megan states she’s popping beyond TikTok – “I’m really hip-hop.” Word! The second verse offers more of the same jabs, where Meg “Just crossed another opp off the checklist / Spankin’ these rap bitches, yeah, that’s my fetish.” Oh, snap! Megan The Stallion kicks ass and takes names on “BOA” slaughtering the competition.

6. Survivor, “Eye of the Tiger”

Eye of the Tiger // Volcano Entertainment, III, L.L.C. // 1982

Survivor, Eye Of The Tiger [📷: Volcano Entertainment, III, L.L.C.]“It’s the eye of the tiger, it’s the thrill of the fight / Risin’ up to the challenge of our rival.” YES, YES, YES 💪! More, please! “And the last known survivor stalks his prey in the night / And he’s watching us all with the eye of the tiger.” Woo! Although Survivor earned five top 10 hits, “Eye Of The Tiger” was their sole no. 1 hit.  It spent six weeks at no. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.  In 2018, the single was certified octuple platinum. Eye of the Tiger (the LP) peaked at no. 2 on the Billboard 200. It secured a platinum plaque.  “Eye of The Tiger” also appeared as the theme song from Rocky III as well as the opener from the soundtrack (1982). It was written and produced by Jim Peterik and Frankie Sullivan.

“Eye of the Tiger” provides motivation musically and thematically. The instrumental is epic with driving, rhythm guitar, prominent bass, sweet keys, and an infectious groove.  With an excellent build-up during the intro, those heavy-handed, distorted guitar hits are crucial to the song’s success. Another reason for “Eye of the Tiger’s” success are dynamic vocals by Dave Bickler, the lead singer from 1978 – 1983.  He brings the tuneful melodies and unforgettable chorus to life.  “Don’t lose your grip on the dreams of the past,” Bickler encourages in the first verse, adding, “You must fight just to keep them alive.” The keyword is FIGHT.  In the second verse, he’s “Hangin’ tough, stayin’ hungry,” adding, “They stack the odds ‘til we take to the street / For the kill with the skill to survive.” Maybe the most motivational lyric comes from the end of the third and final verse: “Went the distance, now I’m not gonna stop / Just a man and his will to survive.”  40+ years later, Survivor continues to lift and motivate us with “Eye of the Tiger”.  It NEVER grows old.

7. Shaboozey, “Horses & Hellcats”

Where I’ve Been, Isn’t Where I’m Going // American Dogwood / EMPIRE // 2024

Shaboozey, Where I’ve Been, isn’t Where I’m Going [📷: American Dogwood / EMPIRE]“We ride palominos 🐎 like they’re SRTs 🏎️ / Once I pick up speed, ain’t no catchin’ me.” Sure, Shaboozey (Collins Chibueze), if you say so, man! In the lyric excerpted from the chorus of “Horses & Hellcats”, the multifaceted artist references palomino horses and the SRT (street and racing technology) lineup associated with Dodge most notably. He continues singing in the chorus of the opener from his 2024 album, Where I’ve Been, Isn’t Where I’m Going, “Lookin’ for me, I be out in Tennessee / I don’t stay the night, grab the cash and leave.” Seems reasonable given all that horsepower. “Horses & Hellcats” was written by Chibueze, Gowa Gibbs, and producers Sean Cook, Nevin, and Dave Cohen.

“Foot on the gas, out on the road / Goin’ for broke, plottin’ on gold.” Word! A relatively brief cut, “Horses & Hellcats” catches the ear.  “Horses & Hellcats” is anchored by a sick beat.  The country vibes are strong from the beginning: guitars, lyrics, and vocals.  Per Chibueze, “I’m in Dan Post 🤠 🥾, everyone lookin’, the shit I put on different.” Fittingly, horses 🐎 are neighing in the background in “Horses & Hellcats.” Additional selling points include the rhythmic, syrupy, and tuneful melody sung by Shaboozey. “I love my rifle, cross my heart, that will not change,” he sings in the second verse, continuing, “Took a little bit of peyote, why the hell am I still in space?” Oh my 😵‍💫! “Horses & Hellcats” is quite a trip – literally with a hallucinogenic involved!

8. Sufjan Stevens, “My Red Little Fox”

Javelin // Asthmatic Kitty // 2023

Sufjan Stevens, Javelin [📷: Asthmatic Kitty]“My Red Little Fox” marks a moving moment from Javelin, the 10th studio album by Academy and Grammy award-nominated singer/songwriter, Sufjan Stevens. Stevens sings, “So kiss me as I am lost / Kiss me from within / Jump in, my red little fox / Yellow paper folded off.” His pen game is robust. It seems that he is referencing his late partner, Evans Richardson, metaphorically – the little red fox. Besides the fox, Stevens also mentions Pentecost, celebrated on the 50th day of Easter. “Let’s not be for want / Wanting is a sin / I don’t want anything at all,” he sings in the third verse, adding, “Let’s drink ‘til it’s Pentecost / Drink unto the wind.” That sounds like a lot of drinks.  In addition to the lyrics, “My Red Little Fox” benefits from piano accompaniment initially (of course, it evolves into more), a tuneful, rhythmic melody, and exceptional layered vocals.

9. Doechii, “CATFISH”

Alligator Bites Never Heal // Top Dawg Entertainment / Capitol // 2024

Doechii, Alligator Bites Never Heal [📷: Top Dawg Entertainment / Capitol]“Tell a bitch, ‘Hoorah’ / Step up in this bitch, I look too fly / Copped the Dior shit on Ventura / Took a midnight swim in my jeweler.” Ooh-wee, Doechii (Jayah Hickmon) is the sugar honey iced tea! After electrifying with “BULLFROG” earlier on this playlist and her mixtape, Alligator Bites Never Heal, she brings on the “CATFISH”! “CATFISH” clocks in at two-and-a-quarter minutes long. Per usual, Doechii drops confident, energetic, and sickening rhymes. Impressing with her cadence and flow, she rhymes over the dusty, soulful beat, produced by monte booker, like a champ.  The catchy chorus, excerpted above, is the section to beat (“Doechii the Don, Doechii the Dean / Doechii supreme, the Swamp Ruler”).  The question is, does she mention catfish explicitly? Yes, but not in a context for pescatarians! “Body so attractive / Y’all be giving catfish / Log ‘em off the web and every gangsta’s giving actress.” Woo! So, the catfish is more MTV show than delicious meat filled with Omega 3.  More interesting than the catfish line are the likes of “Nigga’s ride dick, the dick-riders gon’ dick ride / Make a few bands and switch tribes they switch sides.” Word, more like, wordplay! Safe to say, there’s nothing fishy about “CATFISH!”

10. Lil Wayne, “Kat Food”

Tha Fix Before Tha VI // Young Money / Republic // 2023

Lil Wayne, Tha Fix Before Tha VI [📷: Young Money / Republic]“I just put it all up in her face, woah, Noxzema  /… Woah, I eat her, like, hyena…” 😳 😳 😳!!! Grammy-winning rapper Lil Wayne has always had a way with words, particularly when it comes to sex. The sex is pronounced on “Kat Food”, the fourth track from his 2023 mixtape, Tha Fix Before Tha VI.  The cat that Weezy references is not a feline: “Come here, girl, I got that cat food, ooh, Purina / Ooh, Purina, it’s wet, Katrina.” Holy shit 😳! Charlie Handsome, FNZ, and Rogét Chahayed produced the carnal-sounding backdrop fueling the rapper’s fire.  Depth is NOT the modus operandi.  In the chorus, Lil Wayne is thinking with his natural gun. However, Weezy does offer up some fun, non-sexual rhymes in the first half of the first verse.  But, after the wordplay and confident bars, he returns the focus to S-E-X.  “I eat her like a shark and I still ain’t learn how to swim yet / I still ain’t fuck her friend yet, once I do, I’m a dip set,” he asserts. In the second, he’s ‘fucking’ nasty, referencing cunnilingus (“Diamonds in my mouth, I eat her out and now her pussy glowin’”), fellatio (“Dick up in her mouth, can’t pull it out, it’s like a power cord 🔌”), and ass-shaking/drug use (“Let me see that ass jump for me up and down, jump around, wait / Pop that pussy, shake that ass / I pop a Perc’ and take a Xan”). Honestly, there’s nothing more to say but, meow when it comes to  “Kat Food”.

    11. Lamont Dozier, “Fish Ain’t Bitin’”

Out Here On My Own // Geffen // 1973

Lamont Dozier, Out Here On My Own [📷: Geffen]“I’m out here fighting, hungry / The fish ain’t bitin’ / Life’s so frightenin’ / I’m out here stumblin’…” “Fish Ain’t Bitin’” is the fourth track on Out Here On My Own, the 1973, solo debut by the late, great Lamont Dozier.  Dozier is best known for his songwriting and production skills, collaborating with the Holland brothers. On “Fish Ain’t Bitin’,” he is solely the singer. The song was written by James Reddick and Mckinley Jackson who also produced. Dozier earned his second and final top 40 hit with the single, which peaked at no. 26 on the Billboard Hot 100. The music is superb, featuring a fat but active bass line, soulful groove, and celestial orchestration.  Digging into the underpinnings, the harmonic progression is sweet too. Dozier matches the instrumental excellence with commanding, gritty lead vocals.  The authenticity and expression he brings are fabulous.  The struggle is real as he is “Trying to fight with no defense / And I can’t win with no confidence.” Dozier keeps it political and socially charged, idiomatic of soul music of the era. Specifically, he references the POTUS (Richard Nixon): “Tricky Dick is trying to be slick / And the short end of the stick / Is all I’m going to get.” At the end of the second verse, Dozier is censored with a beep, pleading, “I’m on my knees, beggin’ please / Tricky Dick, stop your shit.” Oh, snap! Lamont Dozier and the message he articulated in “Fish Ain’t Bitin’” is timeless.

    12. Lucille Bogan, “Till the Cows Come Home”

Shave ‘Em Dry: The Best of Lucille Bogan // Sony Music Entertainment, Inc. // 2004

Lucille Bogan, Shave ‘Em Dry: The Best of Lucille Bogan [📷: Sony Music Entertainment, Inc.]“I got a man I love / I got a man I like / Every time I fuck them mens / I give ‘em the doggone clap 👏.” Lucille Bogan 🤢 🤮 🥴 🥴 🥴! According to the late blues singer, also called Bessie Jackson, “That’s the kind of pussy that they really like.”  Bogan was risqué AF – ahead of her time. Nothing about “Till the Cows Come Home”, recorded in 1934, is family-friendly or innocent. The excerpted lyrics are only the surface of the sexually charged lyrics that Bogan sings. “You can fuck my cock or suck my cock / Or leave my cock alone.” What more can you say but ‘Cock-a-doodle-doo 🐓!’ Singing about penis in the 1930s? Savage! She adds in the colorful second verse, “Honey, I piss all night long / You can fuck my cock or suck my cock / Baby until the cows come home.” MOO 🐮! Even after the second verse, she remains brutally honest and filthy.  “You know both of my mens / They are tight like that / They got a great big dick just like a baseball bat / Ooh, fuck me.” Wow! She describes herself in the fourth verse as “a bitch from Baltimore,” adding, “I’ve got spunk from them hairs that will shut the door.” In the fifth verse, she’s “got a big broad ass.” In the sixth, she’s all about reciprocation, men: “If you suck my pussy / Baby, I’ll suck your dick / I’ll do it to you, honey, ‘til I make you shit.” Yikes! Lucille Bogan brings ample personality to one of the nastiest songs you’ll ever hear.

Fox Trot Master – the British Swing Sound of Harry Roy and His Orchestra // Das Stimmt // 2022

Harry Roy & His Orchestra, Fox Trot Master – the British Swing Sound of Harry Roy and His Orchestra [📷: Das Stimmt]“There’s one pet I like to pet / And every evening we get set…” What does evening have to do with it, Harry Roy (1900 – 1971)? The British bandleader, clarinetist, composer, and vocalist continues singing, “I stroke it every chance I get / It’s my girl’s pussy.” Holy sugar honey iced tea! Things escalate on “My Girl’s Pussy” which was recorded by Harry Roy & His Orchestra back in 1931 🤯. As seen with Lucille Bogan on “Till the Cows Come Home”, innuendo-heavy, highly sexual music, isn’t brand new.  “My Girl’s Pussy” features cat sounds (meow) near the beginning 😳. Roy references both kinds of cats. Gotta love a mean double entendre! Still, he takes the most pleasure from her pussy. “Seldom plays and never purrs / And I love the thoughts it stirs,” he sings, adding, “But I don’t mind because it’s hers / My girl’s pussy.” Oh my! Other eyebrow-raising lyrics include the cat’s ‘consistency’ – “It’s always nice and warm.” Also, this cat’s “the best I’ve ever seen,” hence the stroking at every given opportunity. MEOW!
