Sometimes, you just get totally fed up and you have to say to yourself, ENOUGH IS ENOUGH! Yet, at other times, you get greedy, and you JUST CAN’T GET ENOUGH.  In both scenarios, it comes down to one key word: ENOUGH.  Enough is defined by Merriam-Webster in a variety of ways, functioning as an adjective (‘occurring in such quantity, quality, or scope as to fully meet demands, needs, or expectations’), adverb (‘in or to a degree or quantity that satisfies or that is sufficient or necessary for satisfaction : sufficiently’), and a pronoun (‘a sufficient number, quantity, or amount’).  Essentially, enough is a versatile word, and deserves to be celebrated via playlist, hence, 13 Captivating Songs You Can’t Get Enough Of! All songs featured on this musical compendium MUST embrace their enough-ness! 13 Captivating Songs You Can’t Get Enough Of features music courtesy of boygenius, charlieonnafriday, Jennifer Lopez, Michael Jackson, Nicki Minaj, and Post Malone among others. So, without further ado, let’s celebrate ENOUGH as it should be celebrated – fully and sufficiently!

1. Michael Jackson, “Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough”

💿 Off the Wall 🏷 MJJ Productions Inc. • 📅 1979

Michael Jackson, Off The Wall [📷: MJJ Productions Inc.]“You know, I was / I was wondering, you know / If you could keep on / Because the force / It’s got a lot of power / And it make me feel like, ah / It make me feel like…ooh!” Ooh, indeed! Michael Jackson commences his 1979 album, Off The Wall, with a bang! “Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough” sets the tone for a magnificent album far overshadowed by Thriller which arrived three years later.  It should come as no surprise that “Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough” was one of 13 number one hits by Jackson on the pop charts.  This exuberant, jubilant disco joint spent just one week atop the Billboard Hot 100, but has been certified multiplatinum by the RIAA.  Likewise, Off the Wall, to date, has been certified platinum nine times – just shy of diamond status.   This infectious six-minute joint was written by Jackson, while the iconic Quincy Jones produced it.

“So, get closer (Closer now) / To my body now / Just love me / ‘Til you don’t know how,” MJ sings spiritedly in the first verse. In the second, the young, once in a lifetime talent asserts, “So, let love take us through the hours / I won’t be complainin’ / ‘Cause this is love power.” Indeed, indeed, indeed! Love is a force on “Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough,” hence why Jackson states in the infectious, rhythmic chorus, “Keep on with the force, don’t stop / Don’t stop ‘til you get enough.” Besides strong songwriting, and prodigious vocals, “Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough” also gives us a banging instrumental.  The groove is EVERYTHING! The rhythm section is in the pocket – locked in – while those winds and strings only up the ante.  Take one listen and you’re hooked to “Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough” which earned Jackson his first Grammy award for Best R&B Vocal Performance, Male.  Also, the record was nominated for Best Disco Recording, but lost to… Gloria Gaylor for “I Will Survive”. Understandable!

2. Jennifer Lopez, Can’t Get Enough

💿 This Is Me… Now🏷 Nuyorican Productions, Inc. • 🗓 2024

Jennifer Lopez, This Is Me… Now [📷: Nuyorican Productions, Inc]“You got my engine runnin’ / You got the keys to turn me on and on.” Ooh-la-la, Jennifer Lopez! “Can’t Get Enough”, an enjoyable promo single from her 2024 album, This Is Me… Now, commences with unique, pummeling drums that catch the ear.  Post tone-setting drum riff, she begins to talk her stuff, asserting, “I just wanna / I just feel like, ooh / Every time I see ya / I just, ooh, hey.” J. Lo gives us ample personality early on. What is relatable is the theme – the modus operandi – love and sex.  “Can’t Get Enough” was produced by a star-studded cast: Rogét Chahayed, Angel López, Jeff “Gitty” Gitelman, and Hit-Boy. The backdrop is fresh – inspiration for Lopez, who is, shockingly, 54 years young. Inspired by the instrumental, with its stellar groove, and more inspired by love, Jennifer asserts, “You know I can’t get enough (I love that shit).” It should be noted that shit earns a positive connotation – we’re not talking poo! The dedication is real, so much so that (1) “Don’t wanna share you with no one else” and (2) “I’m still in love / With you, boy.” Noted.  From a vocal perspective, Lopez sings well, sounding clear and expressive.  Ultimately, “Can’t Get Enough” marked a pleasant return from Jenny From the Block.

3. charlieonnafriday, “Enough”

🎵 “Enough” • 🏷 Onnafriday / Island • 📅 2022

charlieonnafriday, Enough [📷: Onnafriday / Island]“Please stop calling, you’ve been dishonest / I’ve been through enough.” Ah, those matters of the heart – they’ll give you the blues every time! The good news is those blues translate into some marvelous, marvelous songs. Gen-Z, Seattle, Washington artist charlieonnafriday (Charlie Finch) used his love pain to construct a viral pop hit with “Enough” in 2022. He continues to express his feelings on the utterly sublime, tuneful chorus: “Two face promise, scars and traumas / You put me through enough / Yeah, I’ve been through, through / Enough with you…” Finch penned “Enough” alongside Jeffrey Baranowski, Jordan Santana, Luke Milano, Riley Alba, Seth Reger, and producers Tyler Dopps and Diamond Pistols.  The results are sweet.

“Yeah, had to walk away from all the lies / I think that it’s time for me to rise again,” Finch asserts in the first verse. She was straight up cappin’! In the second verse, he makes it clear, “It’s time to leave, you gotta go /… I’m sick of you and all your moods / And I ain’t here to play no games.” Just like in the chorus, Charlie pours his heart out, sounding authentic.  He’s backed by slick backdrop with a hard-hitting beat providing the foundation.  Essentially, enough is enough – this must end! With “Enough”, clearly, charlieonnafriday makes a statement that is relatable – more than enough to earn our listening attention!

4. boygenius, “Not Strong Enough”

💿 the record🏷 boygenius / Interscope • 📅 2023

boygenius, the record [📷: boygenius / Interscope]“Black hole opened in the kitchen / Every clock’s a different time / It would only take the energy to fix it / I don’t know why I am…” Oh, wow! For the record, the Grammy-winning album by critical darlings, boygenius Lucy Dacus, Julien Baker, and Phoebe Bridgers – the song to beat is the sixth track, “Not Strong Enough.” On this four-minute gem, the songwriting is impeccable, as to be expected from three gifted singer/songwriters. Furthermore, it’s tuneful from start to finish – a ‘pop’ joint in the context of an alternative LP. “Not Strong Enough” covers plenty of territory – more than initially anticipated by the collective. Territory covered includes overthinking and n self-hatred (“Not strong enough to be your man / I tried, I can’t”), mental health/illness, and, perhaps most interestingly, a god-complex (“Always an angel, never a god”).  Notably, it’s brilliant how boygenius highlights this notion that women don’t receive the same acknowledgement as men. All told, “Not Strong Enough” is strong to the nth degree – easily, one of the elite songs of 2023.  It’s well-written, well-produced, and well-performed.

5. Omarion, “Enough For 2”

💿 Full Circle: Sonic Book Two 🏷 Omarion Worldwide • 📅 2023

Omarion, Full Circle: Sonic Book Two [📷: Omarion Worldwide]“Trust me, time will show / That what you’re lookin’ for is right here.” Aww 🥰! Omarion (Omarion Grandberry) wants her to take that leap of faith with him on “Enough For 2.” “Enough For 2” appears as the ninth track from the Grammy-nominated R&B singer’s 2023 album, Full Circle: Sonic Book Two.  Clearly, his love interest has been hurt – broken in the past – but Omarion makes it crystal clear he’s the one to show her true love.  In the chorus, he asserts “If you only trust, like a doctor, I’ll fix what’s broken / Don’t tell me that love can’t live hear / It’s not a real thing, ‘cause, girl, I got enough for two.” Word.  Omarion sings beautifully, as always, making it easy to buy what he’s selling.  He penned this thoughtful joint alongside producers Kenneth Payro and MilTone (Milton Adams).

6. Nicki Minaj, “Love Me Enough” (Ft. Monica & Keyshia Cole)

💿 Pink Friday 2 🏷 Republic • 📅 2023

Nicki Minaj, Pink Friday 2 (Gag City Deluxe) [📷: Republic]“I thought that everyone who loved me would leave me / But, fuck that, I love this new chick named Me-me.” Throughout her career, Grammy-nominated rapper Nicki Minaj has proven herself to be versatile. She can hang with the boys, dropping some of the naughtiest and nastiest bars ever, or, she can embrace pop and serve up melodic vibes.  On “Love Me Enough”, the 23rd and final cut from her 2023 album, Pink Friday 2, Minaj gives us pop-oriented R&B vibes (Murda Beatz, Charlie Handsome, and Joseph L’Étranger produce).  Even though she sings some, on most of this song, she spits bars. She leaves the singing up to Grammy-winning R&B artist, Monica, and Grammy-nominated R&B artist, Keyshia Cole. Monica is the first voice heard on “Love Me Enough,” singing the pre-chorus (“Got off on the toxic words / I used to think love had to hurt”). Cole follows, performing the chorus (“No one needs to save me / ‘Cause I love me enough for all of y’all”).

Nicki delivers agile rhymes in the first and second verse, supporting the sentiment of her sistas.  “I used to think my happiness dependent on a man,” she raps in the first verse, adding, “The worst drug of all, the addiction to a man.” Facts. Notably, at the end of the second verse, Minaj gives some thoughtful, melodic, pitched moments:

“First things first, all my girls, know your worth

Self-love is the greatest love on Earth

Cry your eyes out, get it out, it’s the worst

But love don’t hurt, no.”

Later, we get a post-chorus, performed by Monica and Keyshia Cole, empowering themselves (“Love me enough”).  There’s also a bridge, sung mostly by Nicki Minaj, with some contributions from Monica, highlighted by the lyric, “Celebrate, celebrate / Celebrate you walked away.” Monica closes out the empowering “Love Me Enough”, which tells the ladies, don’t let these men and the illusion of love bring you down and destroy you. Walk away, power up, and love yourself!

7. Post Malone, “Enough is Enough”

💿 AUSTIN 🏷 Mercury / Republic • 📅 2023

Post Malone, Austin [📷: Mercury / Republic]“2 AM, they ran out of lemonade / So I shot that vodka straight, anyway.” Hmm… the first step is admitting you have a problem.  Post Malone clearly has, or had a problem on “Enough is Enough,” the 12th track from his 2023 album, AUSTIN.  Throughout the course of the song, Post addresses how drinking adversely affected him.  The second verse marks one of the best moments:

“Long nights in the city of sin

They said I pick fights that I won’t ever win

I got a bad bitch that’ll bring all her friends

But when I’m with you, it’s like I’m livin’ again

And baby, I’m shit-faced sittin’ on the sidewalk

Ain’t nobody listenin’ when I talk

I fall down and laugh, but it really ain’t funny.”

So, partying in Vegas, with groupies, and ending up “shit-faced sittin’ on the sidewalk.” That’s rock star to the nth degree.  However, Post wants to move beyond this because the connotation is negative. Time to change – enough is enough, damn it! Why? Well, he has stated that fatherhood has changed him, particularly regarding his partying ways.  The old Post Malone is a thing of the past.  He sounds lovely on this thoughtful and tuneful, sub-three-minute joint.  He produced “Enough is Enough” alongside Louis Bell, Rami, and Max Martin – a star-studded, talented team 💪!

8. Fantasia, “Enough”

💿 Sketchbook 🏷 Rock Soul, Inc. / BMG Rights Management • 📅 2019

Fantasia, Sketchbook [📷: Rock Soul / BMG Rights Management]When Fantasia released “Enough”, it marked her first new single since releasing an underrated Christmas album, Christmas After Midnight. “Enough” ends up being a terrific, grown-folks R&B ballad that plays to the Grammy-winning singer’s strengths.  Running north of four-and-a-half-minutes in duration, it’s every second. The production (Jevon Hill, Stanley Green, and Thomas Laskey) is a big selling point, with it’s a lush mix of adult and urban contemporary R&B and pop. There’s brilliant, ear-catching use of pads, string bass, claps, and electric guitar. The sound is old-school, hearkening back to the 80s and 90s, fitting for an old soul like Fantasia is.  She delivers strong vocals, the expectation from a powerhouse! A well-sung, memorable chorus is where her ‘bread is buttered’:

“It’s so hard to let you go

Baby, that’s how I know it’s real love

I fight, but my feelings show

They came rushing in just like a flood

I can’t get enough ‘cause I need you, baby, baby, by my side

You can give me your time

And I’ll always ask for more

‘Cause forever just ain’t long enough.”

The premise of “Enough?” Real love, with Fantasia’s inability to “get enough” of him. “I could just live here in your arms, I don’t wanna move,” she asserts in the first verse, stating in the second, “And I’ll risk it all for you, baby, no, I ain’t got no shame, oh.” Then later, in the bridge, she sings, “All this love is more than I prayed for / More than I would see in a lifetime / And it’s getting stronger / Baby, just stay here with me.” “Enough” = a surefire bop for Fantasia.

9. Father John Misty, “Just Dumb Enough to Try”

💿 God’s Favorite Customer 🏷 Sub Pop 📅 2018

Father John Misty, God's Favorite Customer [📷: Sub Pop]Heavy piano chords at the onset serve as the backdrop for Father John Misty (Josh Tillman) on stunning ballad “Just Dumb Enough to Try” from God’s Favorite Customer (2018). Tillman delivers beautiful, nuanced vocals, firmly in command as always. After a short span as a piano ballad (verse one), drums and rhythmic guitar join the piano (verse two). In the first verse, Tillman sings about being aloof regarding love.  In the second, he sings about his ability to write a song and compel his audience, but he knows very little about ‘her.’ On the third and final verse, he ‘knows women,’ but sort of suggests he’s ‘easy’ and simple. The chorus, which first follows the second verse, is the centerpiece.

“Oh, but I’m just dumb enough to try

To keep you in my life

For a little while longer

And I’m insane enough to think

I’m gonna get out with my skin

And start my life again.”

“Just Dumb Enough to Try” is another triumph for Tillman, though it doesn’t eclipse one-two punch of the opening duo.

10. Mary J. Blige, “Enough”

💿 Good Morning Gorgeous 🏷 Mary Jane Productions Inc. / 300 Entertainment • 📅 2022

Mary J. Blige, Good Morning Gorgeous [📷: Mary Jane Productions / 300 Entertainment]“I know it’s easy NOT to think about me when you’re away,” Mary J. Blige sings in the first verse of “Enough,” the 14th track from Good Morning Gorgeous.  The Grammy-winning R&B standout continues, “‘Cause if you had me on your mind / You’d know that you won’t ever hurt me.” Word.  “Enough” was written by Blige, Blush, Peter Skellern, and producers, Cool N Dre. MJB informs her ex he’s made a mistake by doing her wrong – he has/had a good woman.  “I know the chase has got you feelin’ / Like you don’t need me no more,” she sings in the second verse, asserting in the chorus, “You can’t see what you got at home / You’re dead wrong not to fight for it.” Woo! As wrong as it sounds, Blige’s love pains always seem to be our listening pleasure.  “Enough” is no exception!

11. Barry White, “Can’t Get Enough of Your Love, Babe”

💿 Can’t Get Enough 🏷 UMG Recordings Inc. • 📅 1974

Barry White, Can’t Get Enough [📷: UMG Recordings Inc.]“My darling, I / Can’t get enough of your love, babe.” Word! Throughout his illustrious career, the late, great, Grammy-winning soul artist Barry White (1944 – 2023) landed six top-10 hits on the Billboard Hot 100.  Only one of those top-10s reached no. 1: “Can’t Get Enough Of Your Love, Babe”.  “Can’t Get Enough Of Your Love, Babe” appeared as the fourth track from White’s 1974 LP, Can’t Get Enough. It goes without saying that this is one of White’s most beloved songs.  It’s closest competition? Probably “You’re the First, The Last, My Everything”.

With love featured in its title, and the fact that Barry White is renowned for his magnificent baritone, delivering love songs, “Can’t Get Enough Of Your Love, Babe” is sexy as… you know! It begins with a spoken word intro, where White sets the tone over lush, picturesque production work. “As many times as we’ve loved and / We’ve shared love and made love /… It doesn’t seem to me like it’s enough…” Noted, Barry! Of course, that leads into the unforgettable chorus, excerpted at the top, where White adds, “Girl, I don’t know, I don’t know why / Can’t get enough of your love, babe.”  White goes onto drop two verses, dedicating his love to her. “What am I gonna do? / How should I feel when everything is you?” he sings in the first verse, adding in the second, “Girl, what am I gonna do / Because you’re blowin’ my mind.” Ooh-wee! Superbly penned by and produced by White, marvelously arranged by him and Gene Page, and backed by the epic The Love Unlimited Orchestra, “Can’t Get Enough Of Your Love, Babe” will forever be one of the truly great disco/soul songs of the 1970s.

12. Lenny Kravitz, “It’s Enough”

💿 Raise Vibration 🏷 Roxie / BMG Rights Management • 📅 2018

Lenny Kravitz, Raise Vibration [📷: BMG Rights Management]“When will the desire for love / Outweigh the desire for power?” Lenny Kravitz makes it clear he’s not happy with the current social-political climate on “It’s Enough”, the promo single from his 2018 album,  Raise Vibration. “It’s Enough” is the album’s lengthiest song, running eight minutes in duration. Nonetheless, it benefits from an incredibly soulful groove that is reminiscent of the socially conscious, Marvin Gaye classic, “What’s Going On”. In addition to being soulful, the groove has a distinct, ‘percussive’ nature.  Kravitz sings about the many problems that plague America including racial injustice, unarmed shootings (“.45 caliber in the face / Shot him in the head because of his race”), and political corruption and lies.  A simple chorus sums up the sentiment of the times.

“It’s enough, it’s enough, it’s enough

In the system, you cannot trust
It’s enough, it’s enough
When the whole wide world is corrupt
It’s enough, it’s enough
And we all are just getting fucked
It’s enough, it’s enough.”

13. Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell, “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough”

💿 United 🏷 Motown • 📅 1967

Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell, United [📷: Motown]Thank you Valerie Simpson and Nick Ashford. You penned one of the greatest songs of all time: “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough”.This song right here ranks among the gem of gems when it comes to Motown.  Many musicians have covered this staple, including soul legends, but the definitive take belongs to the short-lived power duo comprised of Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell. Both these musicians departed too soon but they left a surefire bop with no shortage of vocal chemistry. Bright, exuberant, and infectious are three fitting descriptions to describe “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough.” The moment the song comes on, it puts a smile on your face.  Honestly, there’s a vibe when Gaye enthusiastically sings, “Listen, baby / Ain’t no mountain high / Ain’t no valley low / Ain’t no river wide enough, baby.” Woo! Then Tammi picks right up where he leaves off, responding, “If you need me, call me / No matter where you are / No matter how far…” The biggest moment, of course, is the chorus, which is golden!

“Ain’t no mountain high enough

Ain’t no valley low enough

Ain’t no river wide enough

To keep me from getting to you, babe.”

Honestly, “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” is a prime example of a song that doesn’t require in-depth analysis.  It’s marvelously written, exceptionally produced in line with 60s soul (Johnny Bristol and Harvey Fuqua), and masterfully performed by Gaye and Terrell.  Had Tammi lived (she died at 24), can you imagine how many more magical records this dynamic duo could’ve made? Truly, a once-in-a-lifetime gem that we can’t get enough of!
