11 Triggering Border, Borderline Songs [Photo Credits: Brent Faulkner, The Musical Hype, Pexels, Pixabay, Unsplash]ā€˜11 Triggering Border, Borderline Songsā€™ features songs courtesy of Baby Rose, Brandy, Elton John, Jordan Rakei, and Sam Fender.

Border, as defined my ever-handy compadre, Merriam-Webster, has many definitions to be honest! To list a few: an outer part or edge; an ornamental design at the edge of a fabric; to touch at the edge or boundary.Ā  Fair enough! Ā When it comes to our second keyword, borderline, well, there are some variants as well: not quite up to, typical of, or as severe as what is usual, standard, or expected; characterized by psychological instability; situated at or near a borderā€¦

After compiling the miniature playlist Border: 5ive Songs No. 32, I decided to expand the list to 11 songs.Ā  Honestly, 11 TRIGGERING BORDER, BORDERLINE SONGS couldā€™ve been even longer, considering how many border and borderline songs have been written and recorded.Ā  That said, we stuck with the five from the mini-list and added six newbies to it. 11 Triggering Border, Borderline Songs features songs courtesy of Baby Rose, Brandy, Elton John, Jordan Rakei, and Sam Fender among others. Without further ado, donā€™t get too triggered by this border/borderline bops!Ā

1. Brandy, ā€œBorderlineā€

b7 ā€¢ Brandy Nu, Inc. / Entertainment One U.S., LP ā€¢ 2020

Brandy, b7 [Photo Credit: Entertainment One]There is some serious tension on ā€œBorderline,ā€ among the top tier of b7, the comeback album by Grammy-winning R&B singer, Brandy. On the five-minute-plus ā€œBorderline,ā€ listeners are treated to gorgeous, lush, harmonized vocals.Ā  Perhaps more notably, listeners easily perceive the love pain experienced by the singer.

ā€œHeart drops to the floor / ā€˜Cause thereā€™s no you and I,ā€ she sings on the fourth verse, continuing, ā€œMaybe in another lifetime (Right place) / Caught me at the wrong time (Wrong time).ā€ If nothing else, one appreciates the consistent authenticity and personal nature of the lyricism throughout b7. ā€œBorderlineā€ previously appeared on Awesome Songs That Tickled My Fancy: August 2020.

2. Tame Impala, ā€œBorderlineā€

The Slow Rush ā€¢ Modular Recordings Pty Ltd / Island ā€¢ 2020

Tame Impala, The Slow Rush [Photo Credits: Modular Recordings / Island]Tame Impala reworked ā€œBorderlineā€ compared to the original single released in advance of The Slow Rush. The drums are hard hitting and quite potent. Groove bodes well in Kevin Parkerā€™s favor throughout the LP.Ā  Furthermore, the keyboards are also hard hitting, remaining firmly planted throughout this four-minute standout.Ā  Vocally, the listener gets a heaping dose of falsetto, further enriched by the bandā€™s most beloved studio effect, reverb.Ā  ā€œBorderlineā€ also gives Parker another golden chorus, with lyrical variations throughout.

ā€œWeā€™re on the borderline
Caught between the tides of pain and rapture
Possibly a sign
Iā€™m gonna have the strangest night on Sunday.ā€

3. Baby Rose, ā€œBorderlineā€

To Myself ā€¢ OVRCST, LLC / Island ā€¢ 2020

Baby Rose, To Myself [Photo Credit: Island]ā€œWe may both be grown but / You make me feel like a child / Is this something worth saving?ā€ That, of course, seems to be a legitimate question Baby Rose.Ā  I mean, if you arenā€™t being treated like an adult and you are an adult, well, somethingā€™s amiss! On ā€œBorderline,ā€ the distinct-voiced, soulful R&B artist is in a precarious position you might say in regard to her relationship.Ā  As the excerpt from the first verse shows, things are clearly imperfect.

On the second verse, we get more of the same.Ā  Baby Rose seems to be torn between love (perhaps blind love) and being utterly foolish.Ā  And on the centerpiece, the chorus, thereā€™s no resolution:

ā€œMaybe if I could just stop
Thinking of him Iā€™ll be fine
I donā€™t know what to decide
Iā€™m still at the borderline...ā€

Yeah, she has no clue what sheā€™s going to do.Ā  It seems like sheā€™s not going anywhere at this pointā€¦ Her pain is our pleasure though.Ā  Nuanced pipes, soulful, throwback vibes ā€“ itā€™s all good on our end as the listeners.

4. Ariana Grande, ā€œborderlineā€

Ft. Missy Elliott

Sweetener ā€¢ Republic ā€¢Ā 2018

Ariana Grande, Sweetener [Photo Credit: Republic]Pharrell Williams serves as a producer on numerous songs from Sweetener, the fourth studio album by Ariana Grande.Ā  Among the tracks he helms is ā€œBorderline.ā€ Here, the beat is sick ā€“ a surefire catalyst for head nodding and foot tapping, period. Perhaps the bigger news is that Missy Elliott is a featured guest ā€“ ICONIC!

Of course, the person who Iā€™ve least mentioned is the lead artist, Ariana Grande! As always, Ari sounds exceptional and exhibits plenty of personality from start to finish.

ā€œBaby, I just want you to be mine
Wonā€™t you give me a bit oā€™ your time? Oh, whoa
Chasinā€™ you, no, I wonā€™t stop tryinā€™
Just meet me at the borderline.ā€

5. Ed Sheeran, ā€œSouth of the Borderā€

Ft. Camila Cabello & Cardi B

No.6 Collaborations Project ā€¢ Warner ā€¢Ā 2019

Ed Sheeran, No. 6 Collaborations Project [Photo Credit: Atlantic]ā€œSouth of the Borderā€ arrives as the second song off of No.6 Collaborations Project, the 2019 studio album by Grammy-winner Ed Sheeran. On ā€œSouth of the Border,ā€ he enlists Camila Cabello and Cardi B for the assist. As title and personnel suggest, Sheeran opts for a fun, Latin-tinged pop joint.Ā  It is well organized in regard to form, and quite catchy from the start, especially the chorus.

Cabello continues to ā€˜kill itā€™ in a featured role, exhibiting marvelous chemistry with Sheeran on the chorus/bridge sections.Ā  As for Cardi B, she provides a welcome contrast, keeping it tasteful, sans the ā€œLegs open, tongue out, Michael Jordanā€ line.Ā  Still, ā€œSouth of the Borderā€ isnā€™t, um, merely about geographyā€¦

6. Solange, ā€œBorderline (An Ode to Self Care)ā€

Ft. Q-Tip

A Seat at the Table ā€¢Ā Sony ā€¢Ā 2016Ā

Solange, A Seat at the Table Ā© Columbiaā€œBorderline (An Ode to Self Care)ā€ (featuring Q-Tip) represents another powerful moment from A Seat at the Table, the 2016 studio album by Solange. A Seat at the Table is engrained with social issues, particularly those tied with the black experience. On ā€œBorderline,ā€ she ā€œtakes an intermissionā€ from the issues that have been plaguing the world and focuses on taking care of herself and her own. Sheā€™s not neglecting mind you; sheā€™s ensuring sheā€™s in a good place mentally with everything going on. She confirmed this mindset on ā€œBorderlineā€ via an interview from W Magazine.

ā€œYou know I have the world to think
And I know I gotta go ahead and take some time
Because the last thing that I want
Is think that itā€™s time to leave the borderline.ā€

7. Jordan Rakei, ā€œBorderlineā€

Origin ā€¢ Ninja Tune ā€¢ 2020

Jordan Rakei, Origin [Photo Credit: Ninja Tune]ā€œI wait here at the borderline / Always my alibi,ā€ sings New Zealand-born/Australian-bred musician Jordan Rakei on ā€œBorderline.ā€ ā€œBorderline,ā€ which is the perfect addition to this border-driven playlist, appears as the 12th track from Rakeiā€™s 2020 album, Origin.

Elegant, well-rounded production perfectly suits Jordan Rakeiā€™s voice on ā€œBorderline.ā€ Rakei possesses a truly beautiful instrument, singing quite expressively yet with incredible ease. It never sounds as if he breaks a sweat. In addition to the strong production ad vocals, ā€œBorderlineā€ gives us equally strong lyricism: ā€œYour wickedness unequivocally / Undresses me similarly / Too much for my mind / You try to caress but Iā€™m seeing through your disguises.ā€ The chorus, unsurprisingly, is the centerpiece. Here, we get excellent harmonized vocals, vocal production, and of course, well-rounded songwriting.

ā€œFall in love, will you stay?
Iā€™m begging you for it
Weā€™re making up, in each way
ā€˜Cause Iā€™m closer to the borderline
The borderline.ā€

ā€œBorderlineā€ is quite accessible, featuring a standard form (verse/chorus/verse/chorus/bridge/chorus), but is by no means a bore; itā€™s a winner through and through.

8. Sam Fender, ā€œThe Bordersā€

Hypersonic Missiles ā€¢ Polydor ā€¢ 2019

Sam Fender, Hypersonic Missiles [Photo Credit: Polydor]ā€œWe were like brothers / Everybody said we looked the same / You were a little taller, and broader, and bolderā€¦ā€ Nice characterization to say the least! Letā€™s add some context, shall we? Hypersonic Missiles is an album that far too many people missed out on in 2019. Sam Fender absolutely DID THAT ā€“ that superb, underrated album that is! The British singer/songwriter has a fantastic, powerful voice, and brings plenty of musical goodness to the table.Ā  Part of the musical goodness comes by way of ā€œThe Borders,ā€ the second song from his debut album.

ā€œThe Bordersā€ runs five-and-a-half minutes in duration, earning the honors of the longest song on the album. It may be long, but the narrative is alluring, even without the aid of a chorus.Ā  On this energetic, up-tempo record, where sound and performance are concerned, the Bruce Springsteen comparisons are quite pronounced.Ā  The biggest difference? Fender has quite the inescapable British accent.Ā  The songwriting = LIT.

ā€œHeard you glassed a boy back in the borders
Some naughty family boys are after you
You pinned me to the wall and said my mother
Stole your inheritance from you, oh yeah?ā€

9. ZAYN, ā€œBoRdErSzā€

Mind of Mine ā€¢Ā RCA ā€¢ 2016

Zayn, Mind Of Mine Ā© RCAā€œSo, take it off, letā€™s break down all of our walls / Right now, I wanna see it all / I donā€™t wanna cool off, so letā€™s cross the lines we lost.ā€ Hmm, wonder what ZAYN is referencing when he encourages him and his girlfriend ā€œbreak down all of our walls?ā€ While thereā€™s an emotional component thatā€™s referenced throughout ā€œBoRdErSz,ā€ thereā€™s also a sexual one as well.Ā  And, just ask yourself, would the sexual component be far-fetched for Mr. Malik? He definitely seems to be right on the border with this standout from his 2016 debut album, Mind of Mine.

ā€œJust like the ocean, you change what I see.ā€ On ā€œBoRdErSz,ā€ ZAYN doesnā€™t go nearly as far as ā€œPillowtalkā€ (ā€œIn the bed all day, bed all day, bed all day / Fucking and fighting onā€), but ā€œBoRdErSzā€ definitely doesnā€™t come off as innocent either. His sensual falsetto alone should be evidence to refute innocence šŸ˜‰. I mean, lyrics like ā€œTaste your sweet profanity / Itā€™s all for a good cause, think youā€™re doing a good jobā€ makes me wonder the context of that profanityā€¦

10. Madonna, ā€œBorderlineā€

Madonna ā€¢ Warner ā€¢ 1983

Madonna, Madonna [Photo Credit: Warner]ā€œBorderline ā€“ feels like Iā€™m going to lose my mind / You just keep on pushing my love over the borderline.ā€ Sigh, ā€œBorderlineā€ is one of my personal favorite Madonna songs and I have no problem whatsoever owning it! Hailing from her landmark 1983 self-titled debut, ā€œBorderlineā€ would be the catalyst for a run of iconic hits to come in a truly illustrious career.

Few will characterize Madonna as an elite vocalist (myself included), and that shouldnā€™t be an insult. While sheā€™s no powerhouse, her performances tend to be a vibe that pack significant punch. Catchy songwriting, attitude, sex appeal, and marvelous production tend to be the modus operandi for Madge.Ā  Thatā€™s a successful formula thatā€™s not ā€˜borderlineā€™ in the least. On ā€œBorderline,ā€ she sounds great, again without particularly wowing you from a vocal perspective.Ā  Her upper register pipes fit the bright, welcoming major-key backdrop constructed by Reggie Lucas.Ā  Itā€™s 80s to the core, yet still makes your ears perk up nearly four decades later.

11. Elton John, ā€œBorder Songā€

Elton John ā€¢ Mercury ā€¢ 1970

eltonElton John, Elton John [Photo Credit: Island Def Jam]-john-elton-john-island-def-jamElton John, with the help of his long-time lyricist, Bernie Taupin, is a hit machine.Ā  Heā€™s written and performed numerous songs, all of which are classics.Ā  That said, even some of Johnā€™s gems are greatly overshadowed by others.Ā  One truly awesome record that doesnā€™t get the love of his bigger hits is ā€œBorder Song,ā€ which appears on his 1970 self-titled album.Ā  You could say that ā€œBorder Songā€ has received more of its just due after the fact than it did back in the day.

ā€œHoly Moses, I have been removed,ā€ Elton John sings soulfully on the first verse, continuing, ā€œI have seen the specter, he has been there too.ā€ The record has a gospel-tinged rock sound, something that John has done consistently throughout his career.Ā  Arguably, ā€œBorder Songā€ leans even more heavily on the soul side of things, directly borrowing cues from the genre.Ā  Itā€™s a rousing record that features choral vocals, which come directly from the gospel music playbook.Ā  Notably, Aretha Franklin would record a killer rendition as the final song on her 1972 album, Young Gifted and Black (ā€œBorder Song (Holy Moses)ā€). Taron Egerton performed this ā€˜lesser knownā€™ John classic on the Rocketman soundtrack.
