1. Conan Gray, “Comfort Crowd”

💿 Kid Krow • 🏷 Republic • 📅 2020

Conan Gray, Kid Krow [📷: Republic]“The hurt that I’m holding’s gettin’ heavy / But I’ma keep a smile on my shoulders ‘til I’m sweaty…” 🎙 Conan Gray commences his debut album, 💿 Kid Krow thoughtfully with 🎵 “Comfort Crowd.”  “Comfort Crowd” is a relatable record where the lonely protagonist simply needs friends and friendship. He needs a ‘comfort crowd,’ sigh. Don’t we all Conan, don’t we all!

After lying and saying, “‘I’m fine, I don’t really need nobody,’” on the chorus, he expresses the truth: “I just needed company now / Yeah, I just need someone around…” Gray sings beautifully, approaching the record with a calm, cool, and collected approach.

2. H.E.R., “Comfortable”

💿 The Photograph (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) • 🏷 Back Lot Music • 📅 2020

Robert Glasper, The Photograph (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) [📷: Back Lot Music]“Set the tone, when it’s just me / And you alone, never lonely.” Ooh la la! Per the Genius verified video of her single 🎵 “Comfortable,” 🏆 Grammy winning R&B artist 🎙 H.E.R. asserts, “It just needed to have this intimacy about it, set the tone.  That’s the first thing that you do; when you’re in a room and you’re comfortable with somebody, or even when you’re comfortable with yourself, everything is about the tone of the room, you know?” Indeed! She writes the record alongside 🏆 Grammy-nominated artist 🎼✍ Ant Clemons and 🎼✍ DJ Camper who also produces alongside 🎛 Flippa.

Just as H.E.R. states, “Comfortable” sounds very intimate – quite comfortable.  The production keeps things sexy, simple, and definitely ‘a vibe.’  The use of guitar as the principal accompaniment instrument is quite fitting.  It’s not the only instrument, mind you.  We get keys, and eventually, a solid beat filling out the production.  Mix that with those chill, radiant lead vocals, as well as harmonized, layered vocals, and you’ll definitely experience the comfort of this bop the concludes 💿 The Photograph (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack).

3. Future, “Too Comfortable”

💿 High Off Life • 🏷 Epic • 📅 2020

Future, High Off Life [📷: Epic]“Bitch, don’t get too comfortable / Better not get too comfortable.” Hell yeah, 🎙 Future! ‘Course, I supposed you could argue that the 🏆 Grammy-winning rapper gets a bit too comfortable on – wait for it – 🎵 “Too Comfortable.” You could make the same assertion about his music too – he’s been in the game for a while now.  Anyways, “Too Comfortable” appears as the 13th track on his 2020 album, 💿 High Off Life.

“For or five hos, stuff ‘em in a Lamborghini, yeah / Swapped out a Pocahontas, go and get a genie…” Woo… I think!  As to be expected, the ‘comfort’ level for the rapper is through the roof as he flexes hard, gets high AF, “Cut(s) a few niggas and bitches off” – you know things go down, yo! 🎛 Producer Southside definitely creates an interesting backdrop on “Too Comfortable” to say the least, particularly with those nearly inaudible synths mixed in the background. Comfort level lofty, I suppose.

4. Alessia Cara, “Comfortable”

💿 The Pains of Growing • 🏷 Def Jam • 📅 2018

Alessia Cara, The Pains of Growing [📷: Def Jam]“What happens to a flame when it burns out? / What happens to a love that’s not new?” Good questions to say the least! 🏆 Grammy-winning pop artist 🎙 Alessia Cara returned with her sophomore album, 💿 The Pains of Growing, in Fall 2018. the throwback, soulful vibes of 🎵 “Comfortable” make it a damn good record.  In the context of The Pains of Growing, he ninth track is easily among the crème de la crème.

“Oh, we can’t run away from the comfortable
‘Cause it’s inevitable in love, in love
Oh, it’s time we make way for the comfortable
‘Cause it’s already comfortable in us, in us.”

So, what makes “Comfortable” so comfortable to listen to? Well, the assertiveness of Alessia’s voice definitely gives it an extra edge.  Also, worth noting is strong songwriting (Cara, 🎼✍ Ernest Wilson, 🎼✍ Nate Mercereau, 🎼✍ Steve Wyreman), particularly the choruses, and of course, the production (🎛 No ID, Wyreman).

5. Arcade Fire, “Creature Comfort”

💿 Everything Now • 🏷 Columbia • 📅 2017

Arcade Fire, Everything Now [📷: Columbia]🎵 “Creature Comfort” was released as the second single from 💿 Everything Now, the 2017 studio album by 🏆 Grammy-winning alternative rock collective, 🎙 Arcade Fire.  The record commences in electrifying fashion, with synths leading the charge. Arcade Fire remain in dance-rock mode, but also incorporate some gritty guitar in the mix, not to mention the hard-hitting groove.

The themes of “Creature Comfort prove to be darker than the exuberant sound of the record.  How so? Well, “Creature Comfort” encompassing suicide and how screwed up society is. Yikes! “Creature Comfort” easily ranks among the crème de la crème of Everything Now, and marks one of the better songs of 2017.

6. Porter Robinson, “Something Comforting”

💿 Nurture • 🏷 Sample Sized / Mom+Pop • 📅 2021

Porter Robinson, Nurture [📷: Sample Sized / Mom+Pop]“‘Cause getting made you want more / And hoping made you hurt more / Someone tell me / Something comforting.” Back in 2014, 🎙 Porter Robinson released his debut studio album, 💿 Worlds. For the remainder of the 2010s, the North Carolina musician didn’t record another album under his real name (he did record under the alias, 🎙 Virtual Self).  That said, in 2021, Robinson is back as himself releasing his sophomore album, 💿 Nurture – his first album in seven years! Among the songs appearing on Nurture is the ‘comforting’ single, 🎵 “Something Comforting.”

If you’ve followed Robinson in the past, you know he has quite a way with sounds.  He’s a beast behind the boards, with the ability to deliver truly ornate soundscapes.  “Something Comforting” finds Porter at his best, giving the audience an array of colorful, ear catching sounds.  There are rhythmic guitar arpeggios, vocals with ample effects, a progressively more intense beat, and an epic drop. During that drop specifically, the record is incredibly dynamic, with the production totally ‘in your face.’ Intense, energetic, and exciting, Robinson does a bang-up job of varying beats, synths, providing contrasts and most of all, wowing us listeners.  Comforting? Definitely!

7. Lauv, “Comfortable”

💿 I met you when I was 18. • 🏷 Lauv / AWAL • 📅 2018

Lauv, I met you when I was 18 (playlist) [📷: Lauv]Pop/R&B artist 🎙 Lauv showed incredible potential on his love-centric playlist, 💿 I met you when I was 18., Throughout the course of 2017-18, the twenty-something California artist proved he shouldn’t be slept on. In the context of I met you when I was 18., 🎵 “Comfortable” keeps things short and sweet, amplifying R&B vibes.  He delivers one of his strongest vocal performances, flaunting his upper register on the chorus.

“Do you want it bad?
Yeah, she said, baby do ya? (Oh-oh)
Or are you just comfortable? (Oh-oh).”

The production is sleek, embracing the electro-, modern pop/urban palette of sounds.

8. Nick Jonas, “Comfortable”

💿 Last Year Was Complicated • 🏷 Island • 📅 2016

Nick Jonas, Last Year Was Complicated [📷: Island]“So, who are you catering to? / Who you fucking with when there ain’t nobody fucking with you?” Woo, 🎙 Nick Jonas, woo! And he doesn’t stop there on 🎵 “Comfortable,” the 12th and final song off of his 2016 album, 💿 Last Year Was Complicated: “I told you I knew you before you even knew that you were you / Yeah, I know you better than that, I know you better.” Apparently, Nick knows her better than she knows herself.

Jonas wrote and produced “Comfortable” alongside 🎼✍ 🎛 Jason Evigan.  The result is an energetic, sleek, minor-key pop record. Nick emphasizes he has total faith in this girl – he’s comfortable with her and totally locked-in.  He wants her to feel that same level of comfort with him.  One of the coolest moments of the song is when Jonas both references 🏀 baller Allen Iverson (“Iverson was right, it’s only practice”) and a sample of his famous practice press conference is used during the bridge.

9. Jhene Aiko, “Comfort Inn Ending (Freestyle)”

💿 Sail Out (EP) • 🏷 Def Jam • 📅 2013

Jhene Aiko, Sail Out [📷: Def Jam]🏆 Grammy-nominated R&B artist 🎙 Jhene Aiko introduced herself to the world in 2013.  That, of course, is when she released her debut EP, 💿 Sail Out (EP), comprised of seven tracks. She concludes the brief affair with the comfort-driven song at hand, 🎵 “Comfort Inn Ending (Freestyle).” This five-and-a-half-minute record was written by Aiko and lushly produced by the great 🎛 No I.D.

“Comfort Inn Ending (Freestyle)” features some of Aiko’s most real, unapologetic lyrics.  It is a ‘soap opera’ of sorts.  Regretful, Jhene details an affair (“And I should’ve never took you on a boat for your birthday / And I should’ve never fucked you on a boat on your birthday…”) where ultimately “‘Quis found out and then I had to leave him / ‘Cause I couldn’t be the one to hurt him.”  Regardless of your opinion of Aiko, she definitely captures your attention and ends the EP with a bang… or several. No pun intended – okay, okay, I’m lying!

10. Lil Wayne, “Comfortable”

Ft. Babyface

💿 Tha Carter III • 🏷 Cash Money • 📅 2008

Lil Wayne, Tha Carter III [📷t: Cash Money]“Baby girl don’t you, ever, get too comfortable, comfortable.” 🏆 Grammy-winning rapper 🎙 Lil Wayne had a huge year in 2008 – understatement. 💿 Tha Carter III would become the rare album that sold north of a million copies in a week.  This, of course, was long before Billboard would factor in streaming as a means of music consumption.  Tha Carter III was chocked-full of hits including the number on single 🎵 “Lollipop” and the hard-nosed skeletal banger, 🎵 “A Milli”.  That said, we can’t leave out one of the kinder, gentler records among the elite: 🎵 “Comfortable” featuring 🎙 Babyface.

“I’m not saying this to shake you up (saying)
I’m just saying this to shake you up
It’s all good when we making love
All I ask is don’t take our love
For granted...”

Babyface provides a silky-smooth chorus on “Comfortable.” That’s not the only thing that’s pretty smooth, mind you!  With 🎛 Kanye West behind the boards, this record is blessed with a lush, old-school backdrop.  West fuses three notable samples together: 🎵 “You Don’t Know My Name” (🎙 Alicia Keys), 🎵 “Irreplaceable” (🎙 Beyoncé), and 🎵 “Player’s Ball (Extended Remix)” (🎙 OutKast).  After patting Babyface and Kanye West on the back for this bop, what about the main attraction, Weezy baby?  Lil Wayne drops a solid, love/sex-driven performance, actually delivering less risqué rhymes than usual.  He’s not clean mind you – “You know I work you out like Bowflex” – but it’s definitely not as raw as more recent records by the rapper (he doesn’t explicitly mention her private parts).

11. Pink Floyd, “Comfortably Numb”

💿 The Wall • 🏷 Sony • 📅 1979

Pink Floyd, The Wall [📷: Capitol]“Hello? / Is there anybody in there? / Just nod if you can hear me / Is there anyone at home?” Long before 🎙Chester Bennington and 🎙Linkin Park would ever sing about numbness, 🎙 Pink Floyd would be 🎵 “Comfortably Numb” on 💿 The Wall (1979).

🎙 Roger Waters sang the verses, while 🎙 David Gilmour sang the choruses. Notably, 🎙 Scissors Sisters would transform the late 70s gem into a dance record on their 2004 self-titled debut.

“There is no pain, you are receding
A distant ship, smoke on the horizon
You are only coming through in waves
Your lips move but I can’t hear what you’re saying
When I was a child, I had a fever
My hands felt just like two balloons
Now I’ve got that feeling once again
I can’t explain, you would not understand
This is not how I am
I have become comfortably numb.”
