1. The Kid LAROI, “I GUESS IT’S LOVE”

🎵 “I GUESS IT’S LOVE?” • 🏷 Columbia • 🗓 2023

The Kid LAROI, "I GUESS IT'S LOVE" [📷: Columbia]“When I look at you, you look at me / We know what it is, no need to speak / I guess it’s love.” Perhaps, 🎙 The Kid LAROI (Charlton Howard), perhaps.  On 🎵 “I GUESS IT’S LOVE?”, matters of the heart serves as the central topic.  Essentially, the title reveals the cards of this brief but enjoyable single pop-rap single.  Him and her are in – wait for it –  LOVE!

“I GUESS IT’S LOVE” is produced by 🎛 FNZ, Neek, and The Kid LAROI.  Notably, the record gets a soulful lift thanks to a sample, courtesy of 🎙 Atlantic Starr (🎵 “Am I Dreaming”). From there, The Kid, who is entering the homestretch as a teen (he turns 20 August 17, 2023), talks about how special the relationship is. Is this the real deal? Time will tell, but clearly, The Kid LAROI believes this is far more than fling.  “And all these other bitches mad ’cause they know you got me,” he asserts in the second verse.  Hmm, perhaps his eloquence can be questioned, but, at the same time, he is still young, and his dedication to this girl is impressive.  After all, “We’re good enough to wait, we don’t gotta rush, fuck it.” All in all, The Kid LAROI drops another brief but enjoyable single with 🎵 “I GUESS IT’S LOVE?”.  The production is a pro.  Howard raps/sings (somewhere between the two) respectably, too.  Sure, he’s still young, and the seriousness of the love is still debatable – he’s 19, after all – but, his infatuation and growth in this relationship can’t be ignored. The KID… he’s growing up!

2. Saint Levant & PLAYYARD, “I Guess”

🎵 “I Guess” • 🏷 2048 LLC • 🗓 2022

Saint Levant & PLAYYARD, “I Guess” [📷: 2048 LLC]“Said I like the way that you talk to me / I like the way you go far for me / I like the way that you look in my eyes / And say, ‘I want you inside me’.” Oh, $h#†, 🎙 Saint Levant (Marwan Abdelhamid)! Abdelhamid, a musician with a diverse background (Palestinian/French/Algerian/Serbian) has no shortage of confidence, swagger, and dare I say, sex appeal.  Furthermore, he knows how to make a bop – construct a surefire vibe – which he does on 🎵 “I Guess” alongside 🎙 PLAYYARD.

PLAYYARD kicks “I Guess” off, singing the chorus and post-chorus.  “I know you’ve been thinking of us / While you living it up,” he sings memorably, adding, “You said it was never enough / And now you’re thinking of us in the club / But I guess / I guess you know it all, don’t you, baby?” Saint Levant follows with the verse excerpted above, adding Arabic to the mix, before revisiting English, in versatile fashion: “Uh, I was seventeen when I left home / Timbaland to my headphones / Now it’s just Marek and Pedro and we / Ayy, I don’t think you really want me, baby…” Beyond intriguing performances by PLAYYARD and Saint Levant, “I Guess” is well produced, set in a minor key, and pleasing to the ears. Abdelhamid and PLAYYARD shine on this short but sweet joint.

3. FLETCHER, “Guess We Lied…”

💿 Girl of My Dreams🏷 Snapback Entertainment LLC / UMG Recordings, Inc. • 📅 2022

FLETCHER, Girl of My Dreams [📷: Snapback Entertainment LLC / UMG Recordings, Inc.]“If you’re gonna lie to me / Make it worth it.” 🎙 FLETCHER (Cari Fletcher) makes a good point in the closing line of the chorus of 🎵 “Guess We Lied…”. Those pesky matters of the heart are what are making FLETCHER upset on the second track from her 2022 album, 💿 Girl of My Dreams.  In the first verse, she’s bothered by this dying relationship, where her and her lover are no longer anything – “We’re not friends, no, we’re not lovers / No, were’ not enemies of each other, but / Any of them would be better than nothin’.” In the second verse, this non-relationship of any sort stings even more: “Do you ever get the feeling / We’re a real deep cut that’s never healin’? And / It’s fuckin’ me up but not in a good way.” Essentially, Cari hoped that things could heal and resolve but, it’s not happening.  Given the WE, she takes her share of responsibility.  Still, she does want this person to be honest: “So, if you’re gonna lie, just tell me you don’t need me / Break my heart and make it easy / For me to let go of you now.” #FACTS.  All told, “Guess We Lied” is a relatable, matters of the heart record, regardless of your sexuality. FLETCHER sings with incredible authenticity and power too – you feel it! Upping the ante is sweet production work by 🎛 Malay (shout out to those synths and the driving nature of the backdrop).

4. Drake, “I Guess It’s Fuck Me”

💿 Her Loss • 🏷 OVO / Republic • 📅 2022

Drake & 21 Savage, Her Loss [📷: OVO]“You left so abruptly / I guess it’s fuck me…” 🎙 Drake concludes his joint album with 🎙 21 Savage (💿 Her Loss) with a bang – rather, a bomb! That’s right, Drizzy goes all for under consent of the king with the 16th track, 🎵 “I Guess It’s Fuck Me.” “Tell me, what did I do wrong? / Before it’s over / I need you to come over once again / And before you give me closure / Need you to come a little bit closer.” “I Guess It’s Fuck Me” is an intriguing closer. The 🏆 Grammy-winning rapper is true to self, employing an emotional, mostly melodic tinged approached.  Besides singing the chorus, he raps the sole verse.  Even with its un-pitched moments, the verse feels melodic too. The production (🎛 The Loud Pack) is a huge selling point on this heartache-fueled gem, including warm keys and synths.  Drake has no shortage of standout lines, including “Shit could make a thug cry, play it like a tough guy.”

5. Samara Joy, “Guess Who I Saw Today”

💿 Linger Awhile 🏷 Verve Label Group • 📅 2022

Samara Joy, Linger Awhile [📷: Verve]“Guess who I saw today, my dear? / … I saw two people at the bar who were so much in love / That even I could spot it clear across the room.” 23-year-old jazz singer 🎙 Samara Joy shocked the world, or at least, the 🏆 Grammys in 2023.  Joy received two Grammys, most notably the highly coveted Best New Artist.  At the beginning of Grammys history, wins for jazz musicians weren’t surprising – 🎙 Ella Fitzgerald and 🎙 Frank Sinatra were highly decorated. These days, however, it’s rare to see a jazz artist win a big award.  Take one listen to Joy sing, and you’ll understand why she keeps such elite company. She is a truly gifted vocalist with a tone to die for. Her rendition of the standard, 🎵 “Guess Who I Saw Today”, popularly performed by late, great jazz singer, 🎙 Nancy Wilson, is radiant – stupendous! Joy never forces things, singing naturally with impeccable phrasing.  The balance and poise is admirable as Joy provides four-minutes-plus of top-notch musicianship. Honestly, it is hard to believe that Joy is so young with a voice that is mature far beyond her years.

6. Lucky Daye, “Guess”

💿 Candydrip 🏷 Keep Cool / RCA • 📅 2022

Lucky Daye, Candydrip [📷: Keep Cool / RCA]“Guess / It’s on my head, I’m obsessed / I wanna give you my best / We got it as good as it gets / But what’s next, babe?” The sensual 🎵 “Guess” appears on 💿 Candydrip, the 2022, underrated album by 🏆 Grammy-winning R&B singer, 🎙 Lucky Daye. Daye sounds fantastic, wooing both this girl and the audience – Ooh-la-la! Furthermore, he’s backed by lush production that sounds orgasmic – it gives S-E-X.  “Let’s explore, you excite / Let’s XO all night,” he sings, continuing, “So put your face on, meet me between rooms / Don’t gotta stay long, but, baby, stay soon.” Wow! What is interesting about “Guess” is the fact that while it is sexual, Daye wants to build a relationship with this lady.  In the second verse, he asserts, “I know that you like to go for certain guys who / Come in and out of your life just like a drive-thru / Build something with me forever here in my room.” So, he is the one that wants monogamy? Wait for it…I…GUESS!

7. John Mayer, “I Guess I Just Feel Like”

💿 Sob Rock 🏷 Columbia • 🗓 2021

John Mayer, Sob Rock [📷 : Columbia]🎙 John Mayer is honest and transparent on 🎵 “I Guess I Just Feel Like”.   Like much of his 2021 album, 💿 Sob Rock, I love how clean, uncluttered, and crisp the sound is.  This is a relatively simple, yet beautifully penned and performed record, period. Mayer uses space, poise, and simplicity to his advantage.  It’s chill and laid-back yet also energetic. Literally, it doesn’t seem like Mayer broke a sweat while recording his vocals.

Maybe, just maybe, Mayer perspired a bit with the bluesy guitar solo he serves up, but even it never grows too raucous.  The production is perfectly suited for Mayer, with its consistent driving rhythm, as well as a sense of lushness for most of the record.  Lyrically, it’s framed around the titular line and specifically, how Mayer feels.  Ultimately, “I Guess I Just Feel Like” ranks among the best of Sob Rock.

8. Keyshia Cole, “Guess What” (Ft. Jadakiss)

💿 The Way It Is 🏷 A&M • 📅 2005

Keyshia Cole, The Way it Is [📷: A&M]“I’m tired of the bullshit, competin’ with these other chicks.” Hell yeah, 🎙 Keyshia Cole! Sometimes, it is good to release your feelings. Cole certainly doesn’t hold back on 🎵 “Guess What,” the fifth song from her 2005 debut album, 💿 The Way It Is. Assisted by rapper 🎙 Jadakiss, she lets this lame, cheating player know, that she’s done! She’s leaving his trifling A-double-S (“Nigga, I’m leaving you / And guess what? / I’m needin’ my keys from you”)! WOO! She continues singing in the chorus, “I was so stupid for love thinkin’ you was / Everything a real man can give me and more / But guess not…” Naturally, Jadakiss plays the role of lover she’s dismissing, playing defense to Cole’s offense (“You wanna act hard? Yeah, I’ma give you your keys back / Just give me my platinum and black cards”).  He goes on to admit he misses the sex, but nonchalantly asserts at the close of the third verse, “But at the end of the day, just ask me if I give a less 🤬.” Seems like this split is for the best, ultimately!  It’s worth noting, producers 🎛 Diesel and Sean Garrett incorporate some intriguing samples courtesy of 🎙 Sly Stone and 🎙 The Emotions (🎵 “Crossword Puzzle” and 🎵 “Best of My Love” respectively).

9. Raheem DeVaughn, “Guess Who Loves You More”

💿 The Love Experience 🏷 Zomba Recording LLC • 📅 2005

Raheem DeVaughn, The Love Experience [📷: Zomba]“Guess who loves you more than he did? / Guess who treats you better than he did / Girl, me, that’s right, me.” Ah, there’s just something special and utterly nostalgic about aughts R&B! The aughts is when 🏆 Grammy-nominated R&B artist 🎙 Raheem DeVaughn first arrived on the scene. DeVaughn first caught my ear with his scintillating neo-soul joint, 🎵 “Guess Who Loves You More” from his 2005 debut LP, 💿 The Love Experience.  Arguably, “Guess Who Loves You More” didn’t sound like a 2000s R&B cut. Why? Well, it hearkens back to the 1970s, specifically, 🎙 Earth Wind & Fire, whom producer 🎛 Kenny Dope (Kenny Gonzalez) samples (🎵 “Can’t Hide Love”). This repurposed backdrop easily fuels DeVaughn’s fire, who blesses the listeners with ample expression and a heaping dose of falsetto. “I wanna rock you to sleep the right way,” DeVaughn sings in the first verse, continuing, “What I’m tryna say is (Guess who loves you more) / I love you more, love you more.” “Guess Who Loves You More” wasn’t a pop hit unfortunately, but for soul enthusiasts, this old-school styled, love-fueled R&B joint was totally refreshing.

10. Mitski, “I Guess”

💿 Laurel Hell • 🏷 Dead Ocean • 📅 2022

Mitski, Laurel Hell [📷: Dead Oceans]“I guess, I guess, I guess this is the end.” The question is, what is it the end of, 🎙 Mitski (Mitski Miyawaki)? A romantic relationship. “I’ll have to learn to be somebody else,” she continues singing in the first verse of 🎵 “I Guess,” the 10th track from her 2022 LP, 💿 Laurel Hell.   She adds, “It’s been you and me since before I was me / Without you, I don’t yet know quite how to live.” Those words hit hard as a relationship can shape and change your personality.  Without that person influencing you, it makes you reflect, discover, or rediscover who you are or want to be. The second verse continues to work towards this new normal without this person, finding Miyawaki closing with the lyric, “From here, I can say, ‘Thank you.’” Thank you? If the first verse is more melancholy the second evolves showing gratitude for the relationship, even at its end, and a sense of peace.  At only 2:15, “I Guess” makes an incredibly impactful statement about the emotions and identity crisis that can be associated with breaking up, as well as newfound maturation post-break up. Ah, those love lessons!

11. B.B. King, “Guess Who”

💿 Guess Who • 🏷 Geffen • 📅 1972

B.B. King, Guess Who [📷: Geffen]“Someone really loves you / Guess who / Someone really cares / Guess who?” Give credit to 🎼 ✍ Jesse Belvin and Jo Anne Belvin. Why, you ask? Well, the songwriters gave iconic blues musician, 🎙 B.B. King, a terrific song. 🎵 “Guess Who” is one of King’s very, very best. The centerpiece of his 1972 album, 💿 Guess Who, King sings with the utmost soul, delivering a colorful, gritty, and playful vocal. “So, open your heart / Oh, then surely you’ll see / Oh that the someone / Who really cares / Is me.” It is worth noting, “Guess Who” peaked at no. 62 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Beyond epic vocals, King plays the absolute H-E-double-hockey-sticks out of ‘Lucille.’  His opening guitar solo is one of my personal favorites of all-time and I doubt that I am the only who feels that way! Beyond his top-notch musicianship, the arrangement and production are utterly sublime, with marvelous piano riffs, biting horns, and lush strings.  It is the definition of a – wait for it – VIBE! My guess is, you’ll adore “Guess Who” if you don’t already!
