Welcome to 5ive Songs, where we keep things short and sweet – no extra calories or needless fluff! There’s a theme/topic, five songs, and a short blurb.  Yes, it’s a playlist, but it’s a miniature playlist that shouldn’t take much time to consume.  In the 79th edition of 5ive Songs (2022), we select five songs that are associated with GUESS in some form or fashion.  Okay, let’s get into it!

1. Saint Levant & PLAYYARD, “I Guess”

🎵 “I Guess” • 🏷 2048 LLC • 🗓 2022

Saint Levant & PLAYYARD, “I Guess” [📷: 2048 LLC]“Said I like the way that you talk to me / I like the way you go far for me / I like the way that you look in my eyes / And say, ‘I want you inside me’.” Oh, $h#†, 🎙 Saint Levant (Marwan Abdelhamid)! Abdelhamid, a musician with a diverse background (Palestinian/French/Algerian/Serbian) has no shortage of confidence, swagger, and dare I say, sex appeal.  Furthermore, he knows how to make a bop – construct a surefire vibe – which he does on 🎵 “I Guess” alongside 🎙 PLAYYARD.

PLAYYARD kicks “I Guess” off, singing the chorus and post-chorus.  “I know you’ve been thinking of us / While you living it up,” he sings memorably, adding, “You said it was never enough / And now you’re thinking of us in the club / But I guess / I guess you know it all, don’t you, baby?” Saint Levant follows with the verse excerpted above, adding Arabic to the mix, before revisiting English, in versatile fashion: “Uh, I was seventeen when I left home / Timbaland to my headphones / Now it’s just Marek and Pedro and we / Ayy, I don’t think you really want me, baby…” Beyond intriguing performances by PLAYYARD and Saint Levant, “I Guess” is well produced, set in a minor key, and pleasing to the ears. Abdelhamid and PLAYYARD shine on this short but sweet joint.

2. Drake, “I Guess It’s Fuck Me”

💿 Her Loss • 🏷 OVO / Republic • 📅 2022

Drake & 21 Savage, Her Loss [📷: OVO]“You left so abruptly / I guess it’s fuck me…” 🎙 Drake concludes his joint album with 🎙 21 Savage (💿 Her Loss) with a bang – rather, a bomb! That’s right, Drizzy goes all for under consent of the king with the 16th track, 🎵 “I Guess It’s Fuck Me.” It would not be the first time the 🏆 Grammy-winning rapper used the f-bomb in a song title.  Look back to his 💿 Certified Lover Boy when he mentioned 🎵 “Fucking Fans”, woo!

“Tell me, what did I do wrong?

Before it’s over

I need you to come over once again

And before you give me closure

Need you to come a little bit closer.”

“I Guess It’s Fuck Me” is an intriguing closer. Drake is true to self, employing an emotional, mostly melodic tinged approached.  Besides singing the chorus, he raps the sole verse.  Even with its un-pitched moments, the verse feels melodic too. The production (🎛 The Loud Pack) is a huge selling point on this heartache-fueled gem, including warm keys and synths.  Drake has no shortage of standout lines, including “Shit could make a thug cry, play it like a tough guy.”

3. Lucky Daye, “Guess”

💿 Candydrip 🏷 Keep Cool / RCA • 📅 2022

Lucky Daye, Candy Drip [📷: Keep Cool / RCA]“Guess / It’s on my head, I’m obsessed / I wanna give you my best / We got it as good as it gets / But what’s next, babe?” The sensual 🎵 “Guess” appears on 💿 Candydrip, the 2022, underrated album by 🏆 Grammy-winning R&B singer, 🎙 Lucky Daye. Daye sounds fantastic, wooing both this girl and the audience – Ooh-la-la! Furthermore, he’s backed by lush production that sounds orgasmic – it gives S-E-X.

“Let’s explore, you excite / Let’s XO all night,” he sings, continuing, “So put your face on, meet me between rooms / Don’t gotta stay long, but, baby, stay soon.” Wow! What is interesting about “Guess” is the fact that while it is sexual, Lucky Daye wants to build a relationship with this lady.  In the second verse, he asserts, “I know that you like to go for certain guys who / Come in and out of your life just like a drive-thru / Build something with me forever here in my room.” So, he is the one that wants monogamy? Wait for it…I…GUESS!

4. John Mayer, “I Guess I Just Feel Like”

💿 Sob Rock 🏷 Columbia • 🗓 2021

John Mayer, Sob Rock [📷 : Columbia]🎙 John Mayer is honest and transparent on 🎵 “I Guess I Just Feel Like”.   Like much of his 2021 album, 💿 Sob Rock, I love how clean, uncluttered, and crisp the sound is.  This is a relatively simple, yet beautifully penned and performed record, period. Mayer uses space, poise, and simplicity to his advantage.  It’s chill and laid-back yet also energetic. Literally, it doesn’t seem like Mayer broke a sweat while recording his vocals.

Maybe, just maybe, Mayer perspired a bit with the bluesy guitar solo he serves up, but even it never grows too raucous.  The production is perfectly suited for Mayer, with its consistent driving rhythm, as well as a sense of lushness for most of the record.  Lyrically, it’s framed around the titular line and specifically, how Mayer feels.  Ultimately, “I Guess I Just Feel Like” ranks among the best of Sob Rock.

5. B.B. King, “Guess Who”

💿 Guess Who • 🏷 Geffen • 📅 1972

B.B. King, Guess Who [📷: Geffen]“Someone really loves you / Guess who / Someone really cares / Guess who?” Give credit to 🎼 ✍ Jesse Belvin and Jo Anne Belvin. Why, you ask? Well, the songwriters gave iconic blues musician, 🎙 B.B. King, a terrific song. 🎵 “Guess Who” is one of King’s very, very best. The centerpiece of his 1972 album, 💿 Guess Who, King sings with the utmost soul, delivering a colorful, gritty, and playful vocal. “So, open your heart / Oh, then surely you’ll see / Oh that the someone / Who really cares / Is me.” It is worth noting, “Guess Who” peaked at no. 62 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Beyond epic vocals, King plays the absolute H-E-double-hockey-sticks out of ‘Lucille.’  His opening guitar solo is one of my personal favorites of all-time and I doubt that I am the only who feels that way! Beyond his top-notch musicianship, the arrangement and production are utterly sublime, with marvelous piano riffs, biting horns, and lush strings.  It is the definition of a – wait for it – VIBE! My guess is, you’ll adore “Guess Who” if you don’t already!
