11 Interesting Songs Associated with Hours [Photo Credits: Brent Faulkner, The Musical Hype, Unsplash]11 Interesting Songs Associated with Hours ⏳ features music by Alicia Keys, Anthony Ramos, Chloe x Halle, Dan + Shay & Morgan Wallen.

There is a familiar hymn, entitled “I Need Thee Every Hour,” which speaks to needing God every HOUR of each and every day. A number of Christian and gospel musicians have covered this favorite, sigh. Moving on, Kanye West has a song on his 2016 album, The Life of Pablo, entitled “30 Hours,” where he ensures the audience knows that the duration was 30 hours – that’s a long time! And of course, there’s “Golden Hour,” from the marvelous, Grammy-winning Kacey Musgraves album of the same title, where she sings, “Baby, don’t you know? / That you’re my golden hour.” The keyword in each of these songs, none of which actually appear on this list, is the word HOUR.

So, a hymn, Kanye West, and Kacey Musgraves find themselves only getting shout outs on this HOUR-driven music list at hands. No worries though, as there are 11 songs worth hearing on this ‘timely’ playlist. 11 INTERESTING SONGS ASSOCIATED WITH HOURS features music by Alicia Keys, Anthony Ramos, Chloe x Halle, Dan + Shay and  Morgan Wallen among others.  So, without further belabor, turn your hourglass over and jump right into this interesting, hour-driven list of songs!

1. Chloe x Halle, “Ungodly Hour”

💿 Ungodly Hour • 🏷 Parkwood Entertainment / Columbia • 📅 2020

Chloe x Halle, Ungodly Hour [Photo Credits: Parkwood Entertainment / Columbia]“Ungodly Hour” appears as the sixth track on Ungodly Hour, the brilliant sophomore by Grammy-nominated R&B sister duo, Chloe x Halle.  The longest song on the album, “Ungodly Hour” is the sole record that surpasses four minutes in length. Sigh, the ladies have more to say over the sleek backdrop produced by Disclosure.  Expectedly, the results are glorious, perfectly attuned to such youthful, yet highly skilled pipes. Disclosure always ‘gets it done’ blending electronic, pop, and R&B seamlessly (Remember the Mary J. Blige bop, “Right Now” from The London Sessions?). The chorus is absolutely golden – 💯.

“When you decide you like yourself (Holler at me)
When you decide you need someone (Call up on me)
When you don’t have to think about it
Love me at the ungodly hour.”

2. Dan + Shay & Justin Bieber, “10,000 Hours”

🎵 “10,000 Hours” • 🏷 Warner Music Nashville • 📅 2020

Dan + Shay, "10,000 Hours" [Photo Credits: Warner Music Nashville]“When you close your eyes, tell me what are you dreamin’? / Everything, I wanna know it all…” In 2019, Grammy-winning country duo Dan + Shay dropped “10,000 Hours”, featuring fellow Grammy-winner, Justin Bieber. “10,000 Hours” features chill, contemporary country production work with smooth guitars, and a relatively easy-going drum groove.  There are pop sensibilities from the onset, which definitely fit all parties involved.

All parties serve up smooth vocals, beginning with D+S on the first part of the song, and Bieber on the second. In regard to songwriting, questions drive the lyrics on every line of both respective verses. “Hours” features a catchy, memorable chorus that places emphasis on the power of love. Surefire ‘hour’ hit? You bet!

3. The Weeknd, “After Hours”

💿 After Hours • 🏷 Republic • 📅 2020

The Weeknd, After Hours [Photo Credit: Republic]“After Hours” (After Hours) is a throwback for The Weekend; it sounds like his ultra-moody music of the past.  It’s long (north of six-minutes), but the vibe, vocal performance, and the production compensate.  The production is satisfying to the nth degree: dark and moody (in a minor key) with cutting-edge synths and an infectious groove.  Of course, it’s that potent falsetto atop the backdrop that seals the deal.

Beyond the sound and vocals, the theme encompassing matters of the heart amplifies excellence.  He thrives on heartbreak.  The crowning achievement is the chorus. Abel Tesfaye is in his zone here, and that’s always a winning formula.

“Oh, baby
Where are you now when I need you the most?
I’d give it all just to hold you close
Sorry that I broke your heart, your heart
I said, baby
I’ll treat you better than I did before
I’ll hold you down and not let you go
This time, I won’t break your heart, your heart, yeah.”

4. Alicia Keys, “3 Hour Drive”

Ft. Sampha

💿 Alicia • 🏷 RCA • 📅 2020

Alicia Keys, Alicia [Photo Credit: RCA]“Three-hour drive, I’m headin’ nowhere / I’ve got the time now that you’re not here…” On the mid-tempo ballad “3 Hour Drive,” the sixth track off Alicia, Alicia Keys enlists the services of Sampha. Sampha co-produces, also lending his own distinct, expressive vocals on the second verse and bridge (“Heart on my sleeve / No you, no me / It’s more than I can take…”).

Additionally, Sampha joins Keys on the second chorus, yielding sweet chemistry:

“I can’t deny
As hard as I try
That you give me life.”

“3 Hour Drive” is a pleasant record by all means, even if it’s not one that moves the needle or swings the pendulum per se.

5. Morgan Wallen, “Happy Hour”

💿 If I Know Me • 🏷 Big Loud • 📅 2018

Morgan Wallen, If I Know Me [Photo Credit: Big Loud]Prior to his dumb move to party during a pandemic, Morgan Wallen was establishing himself as one of the hottest names in country music.  Regardless of the immature move that caused him to be booted from Saturday Night Live, Wallen is definitely bright spot in a genre who has shown the great ability to earn hits on the Billboard Hot 100, not just the country charts.  Of course, like so many of his contemporaries, old boy enjoys a drink, hence “Happy Hour” (not to mention the reason why he was booted – just saying).

On “Happy Hour,” Wallen numbs the pain of a breakup by partaking in happy hour, where the drinks are cheaper! On the first verse specifically, he contrasts the differences between himself (simpler, down to earth) and her (high maintenance, ‘boujee’). On the second, he paints a picture where she accuses him of trying to rebound with girls that look like her, etc.  Ultimately, however, Morgan just wants alcohol, period.  I mean, isn’t alcohol – happenings at a bar – every country musician’s anthem of sorts? The chorus pretty much says it all.

“[But not when every bar I stumble in]
Is happy hour, drinking double shooters
Buying whisky sours or a pack of cougars
I know I should be sadder, but it all seems silly
‘Cause my good buddy went and hooked me up with some willie
Girl, I know a breakup ain’t supposed to be fun
But I’m here at happy hour, happy ours is done.”

6. Jhené Aiko, “10K Hours”

💿 Chilombo • 🏷 Def Jam • 📅 2020

Jhené Aiko, Chilombo [Photo Credit: Def Jam]On “10k Hours,” Jhené Aiko collaborates with Nas.  This is definitely an unexpected collabo, but a successful one.  The production is old-school R&B at its best, a very fitting backdrop for Aiko and Nas to sing and rap over respectively.  Like much of Chilombo, past love is the theme.

“I’ve been missing you for ten thousand hours,” Jhené sings on the chorus, continuing, “I cannot let go, ten thousand memories.” As for Nas, “Now it’s cold, thought I had control, thought I took your soul / Nah, I took your mind, engraved my name / You told me that my mind is your favorite place to hang.”

7. Tame Impala, “One More Hour”

💿 The Slow Rush • 🏷 Island • 📅 2020

Tame Impala, The Slow Rush [Photo Credits: Modular Recordings / Island]After a five-year hiatus, Australian alternative collective Tame Impala, the brainchild of Kevin Parker returned in 2020. The Slow Rush marked the band’s fourth studio album. The gap between Currents (2015) and The Slow Rush, notably, marked the longest between any Tame Impala LP.  Despite an agonizing wait for fans, The Slow Rush ended up being totally worth it, filled with a number of great songs.

The longest song, “One More Hour,” concludes the album. Like most of The Slow Rush, Kevin Parker is introspective.  Here, he’s in no rush, fusing his reflections with a combination of minimal and more dynamic musical moments.  It’s epic when the guitars kick it up a notch, not to mention the pummeling drums and dizzying psych synths.  “One More Hour” is long, but there’s plenty to go gaga over.

8. Anthony Ramos, “One More Hour”

💿 The Good & The Bad • 🏷 Anthony Ramos / Republic • 📅 2019

Anthony Ramos, The Good & The Bad [Photo Credit: Republic]The dashing Anthony Ramos is best-known for his playing John Laurens and Philip Hamilton in the beloved Broadway musical, Hamilton.  In addition to his acting profile, he brought that compelling Broadway singing voice to studio via his quietly released, 2019 debut album, The Good & The Bad.  Although the buzz was minimal, we’ll acknowledge Ramos’ artistry via “One More Hour,” the third track from The Good & The Bad.

On “One More Hour,” Ramos sings superbly, delivering a performance with ample game and swagger.  Handsome, confident man, with a great voice? We’ll take it, though, his fiancé, Jasmine Cephas-Jones would probably put up quite a fight! Anyways, fun aside, focusing on “One More Hour,” the sound is sleek, contemporary R&B-style pop. Everything sounds and feels fresh and spirited. The catchy chorus serves as the centerpiece to this must-hear; ‘hour’ joint:

“Let’s go one more hour
Lovin’ this encounter
Usually I’m gone now
I’m not ready
I don’t really wanna go.”

9. Liam Payne, “Rude Hours”

💿 LP1 • 🏷 Capitol • 📅 2019

Liam Payne, LP1 [Photo Credit: Capitol]LP1 was a hard flop for Liam Payne, period.  There’s really no other way around it.  LP1 debuted at an incredibly tepid no. 111 – OUCH! Making matters worse, it was a ‘meh’ album at best, easily securing a top-3 spot on our 13 Forgettable and/or Worst Albums of 2019: Year in Review. Honestly, I’m not being rude, but, the solo thing just didn’t work for this 1D member.  Even so, he does have a song from LP1 worth mentioning in the context of this HOUR-based list: “Rude Hours.”

“Rude Hours” presents listeners with a risqué, more sexual Liam Payne.  On the first verse, our ‘Casanova’ sings, “Meet me in the parking lot / Yeah, might be a bad idea, I prob’ly do your ass in the car.” Well, that’s just freaky isn’t? Anyways, he later delivers the clever, double entendre, “Oh that’s what your body always does to me / Check in at the ‘Hard Rock’ Hotel, baby.” Hard Rock huh? Wonder what he’s getting at there… Anyways, on the chorus, Payne ‘seals the deal,’ if you catch my drift.

“Sweat drippin’ down your back
You’ve been here on top of me, feel crazy ‘bout you
(Crazy about you, messed up about you, ooh)
I bet we forget
Everything else, it won’t exist for hours
Hours, hours, hours, hours.”

10. Weezer, “Happy Hour”

💿 Pacific Daydream • 🏷 Crush /Atlantic • 📅 2017

Weezer, Pacific Daydream © Atlantic“I’m like Ponce de Leon / Setting on a ship for the new world / Check out the birds and flowers / Let’s chill out on this island…” “Happy Hour” (Pacific Daydream, 2017), commences with bright, enthusiastic production.  Weezer hipster front man Rivers Cuomo matches the exuberance vocally, making an alluring case for the record.

While he’s initially “like Stevie Ray Vaughan on the stage, high on music,” his boss serves up buzz kill. Quoting Cuomo directly, he sings:

“But then my boss calls and she’s crushin’ me with a 20-ton weight
Just like Monty Python.”

Yep, only Rivers Cuomo and Weezer would go there! The chorus shines like a beacon.  It’s simple, but effectively conveys the needs of the ‘down’ singer. All in all, “Happy Hour” is enjoyable, if a wee bit too loud and somewhat novel.

“I need happy hour on sad days (sad days)
I need a happy hour, I can’t wait (can’t wait).”

“Happy Hour” previously appeared on 11 Totally Happy Songs.

11. Foo Fighters, “Happy Ever After (Zero Hour)”

💿 Concrete and Gold • 🏷 RCA • 📅 2017

Foo Fighters, Concrete and Gold © RCA“The sun went down on another perfect day / Busy counting shadows on the wall / The weeds are swallowing up the flower bed / Roses in the whiskey jar / Blood on the thorns / Drink until the taste is gone.” Interestingly, within the context of Concrete and Gold, Foo Fighters exhibit some conservativeness on “Happy Ever After (Zero Hour).” Yes, Dave Grohl and company pull back as opposed to punch you in your face.

Yes, the hard-hitting stuff by Foo Fighters provides more of an adrenaline rush.  That said, this more melodic, thoughtful side of the band proves to be captivating as well.  “Happy Ever After (Zero Hour)” is one of few songs on the album where the ‘cool’ is maintained, not replaced with angst.  Previously, “Happy Ever After (Zero Hour)” appeared on 11 Totally Happy Songs.
