Perhaps it’s not as accomplished as “Let Me,” British urban-pop standout ZAYN definitely entertains and builds excitement for his sophomore album with single “Entertainer.”
“Sweet baby, our sex has meaning.” That was the opening lyric from “Let Me,” the first ZAYN single of 2018. “Let Me” was definitely a mature step for the former 1D member, finding him at least trade the rough sex of “Pillowtalk” for more a more meaningful, less explicit experience. Clearly his sophomore album is on the horizon as ZAYN drops his second single of 2018, “Entertainer.” Question – is it actually entertaining?
“You thought you had me, didn’t you?” On “Entertainer,” meaningful sex seems to be a distant memory, particularly given the fact that “Entertainer” follows “Let Me” sequentially. Clearly, he’s heartbroken and pissed off. The music video adds an extra wrinkle, given that apparently, narratively, ZAYN meets his girl at a ‘gentleman’s club.’ Perhaps that’s why the wordy pre-chorus – sung rhythmically and in an undertone – goes something like this:
“Guess you didn’t know that you were my favorite entertainer
I watch you, and laugh with, and fuck with you
Don’t’ you take me for a fool
In this game, I own the rules
You were my favorite entertainer
I watch you, I laugh with, with fake it too
Don’t you take me for a fool
I’m a show you a thing or two.”
On the chorus, ZAYN asserts he won’t be available when she needs him the most. On the second verse, much like the first, he’s frustrated and upset by how things went down. Later, on the bridge, he’s anti “playing your games,” has keen perception regarding “fake love,” and once again asserts, “I’m a turn you down when you need me anyway.”
Final Thoughts
Returning to the aforementioned question – is “Entertainer” actually entertaining? The answer is yes. ZAYN has another enjoyable, intriguing, and well-rounded single on hand with “Entertainer.” Is it as good as the best-of-2018-caliber “Let Me?” That would be a no. The vibes are completely different, yet the appeal is still massive.
