Yungblud, 21st Century Liability [Photo Credit: Geffen]Rising 19-year old British alternative artist YUNGBLUD continues to impress on “California,” the third single from his forthcoming full-length debut LP.

“They tried to put me on Ritalin / Visions of calming me down / They tried to put me on Ritalin / Hopin’ I don’t make a sound.” 19-year old British newcomer YUNGBLUD  may be a self-described “21st Century Liability”, but he’s no liability when it comes to the music. What stands out about this young artist is how eclectic and truly unique he is.  “California” successfully combines alternative music, the influence of hip-hop, and good ole punk spirit.

“I can’t believe you put me in a straitjacket.” To some degree, the energetic “California” seems to be about older generations, pointing the finger at the uncouthness and sheer rebelliousness of younger generation.  When YUNGBLUD asserts, “That I am ok you take more drugs than me,” a snapshot of rebellious parents and/or grandparents growing up the turbulent 60s and 70s, a time of great social change, comes to mind.  Regardless, youthfulness plays a role, confirmed by the catchy, memorable chorus.

“Maybe I just need to go to California / ‘Cause I am young, don’t wanna die, yet can’t afford it / Maybe I just need to go to California / Swear that when I get old you’ll blow all my brains out.”

Final Thoughts

California is often associated as an idyllic place to live, particularly for youth – it’s a land of opportunity.  Furthermore, it’s the big, liberal state, which would suit the uncalm nature of YUNGBLUD.  The second verse is even more colorful, with its profane and slang references.  The bridge exemplifies ‘the tortured soul’ as he sings, “Rip my heart off / Pull it out of my chest.”  Much more could be said about “California” the song, as well as just how promising an artistic prospect YUNGBLUD is, but, we’ll leave it there.  Great, well-produced, well-performed single that captures the spirit of Generation Z.
