We Were Sharks, "Problems" [📷: Revival Recordings]Alternative collective We Were Sharks shines on their first single of 2021, “Problems,” set to appear on their 2021 album, New Low.

Often, it is said that it’s a 🎵 “Thin Line Between Love and Hate”, as soul collective 🎙 The Persuaders so superbly expressed back in the day.  I have to agree.  Also, 🎙 We Were Sharks seem to agree too, judging by their awesome new single, 🎵 “Problems”, set to appear on their forthcoming album, 💿 New Low (May 21, 2021).  According to the band, the record “focuses on the stubbornness that can happen regardless of whether two people passionately love one another or if they are angry with each other.”  Again, sort of that ‘thin line’ thing.  The results that WWS serve up are quite impressive.  Read on the see exactly why I’m so high on this single!

“Problems,” which is set in a bright, major key, begins abruptly with assertive, energetic vocals.  Man, oh man, do I heart the tone of lead singer 🎙 Randy Frobel! Besides his beautiful, ripe pipes, he has quite the tuneful, sweet melody to work with.  Great vocalist and a great melody can only yield a great song, right? Right.  Furthering the greatness, the form is straightforward and easily accessible to all listeners.  The songwriting (Frobel, 🎼✍ Colin Jacques, 🎼✍ Jason Mooney, 🎼✍ Matthew Sears, 🎼✍ Paul Marc Rousseau of Silverstein, 🎼✍ Sam Guaiana, and 🎼✍ Will Plummer) is fun and well-rounded, particularly the pre-chorus (“Hot tempers, cold shoulder”) and of course, the chorus. The chorus is pretty epic thanks to dynamic guitars, pounding drums, and balanced but commanding vocals (Frobel never over sings or pushes too much). Focusing just a bit more on the production and sound beyond the chorus, the guitar work that precedes the bridge and continues throughout the bridge is S-W-E-E-T.

Final Thoughts 💭

So, what’s the verdict on We Were Sharks’ “Problems?” Well, it’s quite satisfying! The pros are limitless with winning marks when it comes to vocals, songwriting, production, and honestly, the overall vibe.  If your playlist needs a lift, give this awesome band a look with their awesome, totally ‘unproblematic’ gem!
