Welcome to Music Lifts, featuring songs that encourage, inspire, and uplift the spirit; songs that exude fortitude, positivity, and resolve, even in the face of adversity.  Featured songs aren’t genre-specific; songs may or may not be faith-based. The goal is for these songs to make you feel better – be LIFTED to new heights!  So, for the 15th edition of Music Lifts (2026), we highlight “Beautiful Day” as performed by U2.

“The heart is a bloom, shoots up through the stony ground.”
Those are inspirational, true, and thought-provoking lyrics, Bono.  Even the worst situations can’t thwart the heart. U2 (Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton, and Larry Mullen Jr.) is optimistic despite adverse situations on “Beautiful Day”. The opener from their 2000 Grammy-winning, multiplatinum album, All That You Can’t Leave Behind, was a success on the pop charts, reaching number  21 on the Billboard Hot 100.  It was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America. Rounding out its accolades, “Beautiful Day” won three Grammys at the 43rd Annual Grammy Awards:  Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal.  This 2000 tour de force was written by the band and produced by Daniel Lanois (b. 1951) and Brian Eno (b. 1948).

Throughout “Beautiful Day,” the song mentions adversity, though it doesn’t wallow in it. See the second verse: “You’re on the road, but you’ve got no destination / You’re in the mud.” A lack of direction in life can be incredibly frustrating. However, Bono encourages seizing the day and making even the darkest of days beautiful.  The chorus is the crowning achievement, which is varied each time.  “It’s a beautiful day / Sky falls, you feel like / It’s a beautiful day / Don’t let it get away,” Bono sings exuberantly.  The bridge is intriguing, highlighting beauty despite hardship.  He concludes with a Biblical reference, “And see the bird with a leaf in her mouth / After the flood all the colours came out.” “Beautiful Day” is a beautiful, uplifting song by U2.  Bono sings assertively and expressively, with incredible sincerity.  The music bursts with jubilance, thanks to the band’s skills – The Edge’s ripe guitar, Clayton’s rhythmic bass, and Mullen Jr.’s punchy drums – as well as Eno’s colorful keys, synths, and programming. This positive, award-winning song NEVER grows old.
