Tyga, SWISH [Photo Credits: The Last Kings Music / EMPIRE]Tyga, celebrating a return to pop relevancy, drops a sexed-up, skeletal, ‘strip club anthem’, “SWISH.” “SWISH” samples the David Banner hit, “Play.”

I give credit where credit is due.  Tyga seems to be back on an upswing in 2018.  That’s awesome for him, considering it’s been a while since the rapper’s gotten much buzz.  Give him props for his single “Taste” (featuring Offset) being certified platinum.  He’s back with another single, “SWISH,” which heavily relies on a famous top-10 rap hit from the 00s, “Play”, courtesy of David Banner.

The heavy reliance on “Play” is apparent from the intro of the song, where the signature, whispered line is featured verbatim: “C*m girl, I’m tryna get your pu**y wet.”  Like “Play,” but featuring its own distinct production, “SWISH” is a skeletal, minimal-sounding rap banger. Throughout, the subject matter is one dimensional to the nth degree – sex, sex, and more sex.  This is Tyga back during his “Rack City” days delivering utter filth about his endeavors and her anatomy.  When he’s not rapping, David Banner is, via “Play.” The hook is dumb AF, focused on assets.

Final Thoughts

The good news is, as aforementioned, Tyga is on an uptick lately.  The bad news is, well, the rhymes are still shallow and lack the least bit of transcendence.  As a club banger – particularly a ‘strip club banger’ – this is effective.  Otherwise, in my opinion, it’s your typical, predictable, oversexed rap record that doesn’t reach for a bigger picture.  It’s dessert, but personally, the chef could’ve used more sugar…
