Ty Dolla $ign, By Yourself | Track Review 🎵

Short, but sweet, Ty Dolla $ign drops an enjoyable joint with “By Yourself,” assisted by Jhené Aiko and Mustard.

Ty Dolla $ign is one of music’s most prolific artists.  He collaborates with a number of musicians as a featured guest, while also releasing single after single, even when he’s not got a new project out.  Of course, the hip-hop artist does have a new project on the way, so, we can expect his latest single, 🎵 “By Yourself,” featuring Jhené Aiko and Mustard to be on the track list. Like so many Dolla $ign songs, the length is short – two-and-a-half-minutes to be precise.  That’s perfect for him as well as Mustard, who handles the production duties.  He gets a nice lift thanks to the fact that “Be Yourself” samples “G.H.E.T.T.O.U.T.” by Changing Faces (All Day, All Night, 1997).

Following the intro (mostly performed by Billie Piper), Ty Dolla $ign unleashes a repetitive chorus:

“You ain’t never ‘fraid to be by yourself
...You don’t need a man, you do it by yourself.”

Who is he referencing? An independent woman, who he goes on to highlight on the first verse. Per Ty, she’s “Quick to tell a broke nigga, ‘Go away’,” not to mention that she’s “In the mirror takin’ pics ‘cause you know you the shit.” Here, we get those distinct, expressive vocals in all their glory. Jhené Aiko performs the second verse, providing the feminine perspective in first person.“Yeah, I’m that bitch and I know,” she asserts, later adding, “I be ridin’ through the hood bumpin’ my own shit.” She continues to give off those cool and chill vibes, brilliantly exuding confidence here.  Great separately, I also love the moments when both Ty and Aiko perform together.

Final Thoughts 

Short, but sweet, Ty Dolla $ign drops an enjoyable joint with “By Yourself.” Does he move the needle? No, but ultimately, it’s a vibe and he’s true to self, with some help from some friends.
