Thomas Rhett continues to integrate pop into his music on “Look What God Made Her Do,” the second advance single from Center Point Road.

“Don’t even want attention / But yeah, that’s all she’s getting / Her song is on and she’s spinning around, yeah.” Grammy-nominated contemporary country singer Thomas Rhett is definitely NOT your father’s country musician.  Rhett is among the new breed of country musicians willing to experiment and integrate and fuse a number of different styles.  That’s exactly what he did on “Don’t Threaten Me with a Good Time”, the promo single from his highly-anticipated fourth studio album, Center Point Road (June 2, 2019). Once again, Rhett goes ‘against the grain’ on “Look What God Gave Her,” the second advance single from Center Point Road.

“Look What God Gave Her” blends contemporary country and modern pop. The result is a very sleekly produced record. As always, Thomas Rhett delivers beautiful vocals that are ultimately well-produced. A relatively quick-paced record, Rhett manages to keep things brief, clocking in under three-minutes.  Furthermore, despite integrating those pop sounds, regarding the form, “Look What Gave Her” is pretty straightforward – instrumental intro, verse, pre-chorus, chorus… bridge, chorus. The pre-chorus is short, but a solid lead-in to the chorus:

“And those eyes can hypnotize
Was designed to blow my mind.”

The chorus is memorable, with some ‘swagger’ about it – rhythmically, it embraces a ‘hip-hop identity,’ while remaining idiomatic of country music.  Rhett serves up some excellent ad-libs towards the end without ever over-singing or growing overindulgent.

“Look what God gave her, how perfect he made her
She walks in the room, it’s like he answered my prayers
The way that she moves, how could anybody blame her?
I know she’s got haters, but it ain’t her fault, nah
Look what God gave her.”

Final Thoughts

All in all, Thomas Rhett is onto something with “Look What God Gave Her.” No, he doesn’t reinvent the wheel, but he is among the more open-minded musicians reinventing country beyond its traditional fan base.  Does everything he does always work? No, but, he has some worthwhile ideas and he’s unafraid to try them. Kudos.
