Ah, sometimes it’s better to keep things lite on the fat and calories 💪! That’s the goal of the miniature playlists gracing The Musical Hype.  On 3 or 4 BOPS, we select a topic or theme, choose three or four relevant songs, and provide a lit 🔥, electrifying blurb.  3 or 4 BOPS shouldn’t take too much time to consume – typically 5 minutes or less! In the 19th edition of 3 or 4 BOPS (2022), we select awesome songs that are associated with THICK in some form or fashion.  Without further ado, let the BOPS begin!

1. Beyoncé, “THIQUE”

💿 Renaissance🏷 Parkwood Entertainment / Columbia • 🗓 2022

Beyoncé, RENAISSANCE [📷: Parkwood Entertainment LLC / Columbia]“Ass getting bigger / Racks getting bigger / Cash getting larger.” Ooh wee, 🎙 Beyoncé! The 🏆 Grammy winner commences 🎵 “THIQUE”, one of many gems from her 2022 album, 💿 RENAISSANCE, with a bang.  Any time your first lyric is ass, well, the song is likely going to be quite a trip!  She keeps it explicit!

“He thought he was loving me good, I told him, ‘Go harder’

She thought she was killing that shit, I told her, ‘Go harder’

Just look at this alkaline wrist ‘cause I got that water

Ass getting thicker

Cash getting thicker (Thicker, thicker).”

Woo! Those lyrics regarding size aren’t purely sexual, but Bey knows what she’s doing with that sexual innuendo!  She puts emphasis on booty (“Say she on a diet, girl, you better not lose that ass”). That said, there’s also some big dick energy: “Boy, you crazy, body mean, back it up like limousine / You gotta make a fold out to fit a magazine, right…” Day-um, that’s one big pickle! Beyoncé knows how to raise eyebrows. She exudes confidence on 🎵 “THIQUE”, focusing on body and drip.

2. 2 Chainz, “Quarantine Thick” (Ft. Latto)

💿 So Help Me God • 🏷 Gamebread / Def Jam • 🗓 2020

2 Chainz, So Help Me God [📷: Gamebread / Def Jam]“Okay, my day was amazin’ / Her booty shots graze me / She said, all the gyms closed, so she been feelin’ lazy / She been late night snackin’, but shawty still my baby…” 🎙 2 Chainz remains true to self on 🎵 “Quarantine Thick”, which appears on his 2020 album, 💿 So Help Me God. “Quarantine Thick” features banging, minimalist southern rap production (basically, a keyboard line and hard-hitting drums) courtesy of 🎛 Yung Lan. He’s absurd as ever – funny, raunchy, and, sexed TF up. A prime example: “I had that pussy pissin’ once I hit that kidney.” Furthermore, we are treated to a catchy chorus, highlighting this newly acquired thickness.

Beyond Chainz, 🎙 Latto plays off the sex that he throws out, responding in an equally sexed-up fashion: “Quarantine thick, he tryna get me lipo (ooh) / Pussy holy water, put that on the Bible.” Damn! Even if she’s ‘unrefined,’ you’ve gotta love her quick, agile flow and the mad attitude she brings to the table. Banger!

3. Mary J. Blige, “Thick of It”

💿 Strength of a Woman • 🏷 Capitol • 📅 2017

Mary J. Blige, Strength of a Woman [📷: Capitol]“Thick of It,” a highlight from 💿 Strength of a Woman, represented a return to form for 🎙 Mary J. Blige. The songwriting proved successful and well-suited to her strengths.  The 🏆 Grammy-winner has always excelled at big songs, driven by the pain and triumphs of love and resolve. This lushly produced record plays to the grown folks fan base.

That said, “Thick of It” also appealed to the younger audience. The second verse, for example, hails from the ‘Drake play book.’ Blige more or less pop-raps:

“What a hell of a year

If I make it through hell and I come out alive I got nothing to fear

No more crying and trying …

Let me be clear

I wasn’t perfect

But this shit ain’t worth it

I’m done with the mess…”

The melodic rapping is sweet, but the centerpiece is, without a doubt, the chorus, where Blige shows off those anointed pipes.
