“Baby love, my baby love / I need you, oh, how I need you.”
The iconic Motown girl group, The Supremes Diana Ross (b. 1944), Florence Ballard, and Mary Wilson – did their big one with “Baby Love”. PERIOD! “Baby Love” is the third track from their 1964 album, Where Did Our Love Go.  “Baby Love” marked the second of 12 number one hits by The Supremes, following “Where Did Our Love Go”. The legendary songwriting trio Holland-Dozier-Holland (Brian Holland, Lamont Dozier, and Eddie Holland) composed this Motown classic. Brian Holand and Dozier produced it.

Among the ear-catching sounds are piano, vibraphone, guitar, bass, drums, and those mean, articulated horns (especially baritone saxophone). With accompaniment that slaps, the girls put in work, too. Diana Ross brings it with her refined and sophisticated lead vocals. “Instead of breaking up,” she sings in the second verse, “Let’s do some kissing and making up.” I cosign that! Even when she makes her point loud and clear (“Don’t throw our love away / Please don’t do me this way”), she sounds as if she barely breaks a sweat. While the verses are electrifying, it’s the chorus, excerpted above, that is the crème de la crème.  The lyrics are varied, but the effect remains the same:  “Why you do me like you do? (Don’t throw our love away) / After I’ve been true to you (Don’t throw our love away).” Adding to the energy and overall glory of the track is a timely key change.  Modulations can work wonders! All told, “Baby Love” is a once-in-a-lifetime, soul-pop, Motown gem.  Its greatness speaks for itself.
