The Pointer Sisters, Fire: Throwback Vibez ๐Ÿ•ถ๏ธ๐ŸŽถ No. 170 (2023) [๐Ÿ“ท: Brent Faulkner / The Musical Hype; Sony Music Entertainment; John Alan Sperry, PIRO via Pixabay]In the 170th edition of Throwback Vibez (2023), we recollect and reflect on โ€œFireโ€ by versatile R&B collective, The Pointer Sisters.ย

The vibes, the vibes, those Throwback Vibez ๐Ÿ•ถ๏ธ๐ŸŽถ! Throwback Vibez ๐Ÿ•ถ๏ธ๐ŸŽถ is a column that celebrates awesome songs from the past.ย  The records that grace this column are older, but that doesnโ€™t necessarily mean that theyโ€™re ancient โ€“ no fossils ๐Ÿฆด! All genres of music are welcome. In the 170th edition of Throwback Vibez ๐Ÿ•ถ๏ธ๐ŸŽถ (2023), we recollect and reflect on ๐ŸŽต โ€œFireโ€, performed by ๐ŸŽ™ The Pointer Sisters.ย

The Pointer Sisters, Energy [๐Ÿ“ท: Sony Music Entertainment]โ€œMy words say split ๐Ÿ’” / But my words they lie ๐Ÿคฅ / โ€˜Cause when we kiss ๐Ÿ˜˜, ooh, fire.โ€ Fire ๐Ÿ”ฅ, indeed, ๐ŸŽ™ The Pointer Sisters! ๐ŸŽต โ€œFireโ€ marks one of the biggest hits by the iconic, ๐Ÿ† Grammy-winning, sister group comprised of ๐ŸŽ™๏ธ Anita Pointer (1948 โ€“ 2022), June Pointer (1953 โ€“ 2006), and Ruth Pointer (1946 โ€“ ). Anita sings led on this gem, which performed superbly on the pop charts, peaking at no. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1979 (it debuted in 1978).ย  It should be noted that โ€œFireโ€ is NOT an original ๐Ÿคฏ. Once again, like with an earlier hit, ๐ŸŽต โ€œYes We Can Canโ€, The Pointer Sisters were the coverers.ย  In this case, they made a ๐ŸŽผ โœ Bruce Springsteen song, originally intended for ๐ŸŽ™ Elvis Presley, and recorded by ๐ŸŽ™ Robert Gordon and Springsteen himself, a gargantuan hit. In addition to its chart accolades, โ€œFireโ€ was certified gold by the RIAA. Likewise, the parent album, ๐Ÿ’ฟ Energy, was also certified gold.

The premise of โ€œFireโ€ is matters of the heart โ€“ L-O-V-E โค๏ธ. Essentially, Anita Pointer is giving mixed signals. She doesnโ€™t like him, but she does, as the excerpted lyrics suggest. Prior to those fiery lines, in the first verse, Anita sings, โ€œYouโ€™re pullinโ€™ me close / I just say no / I say I donโ€™t like it / But you know Iโ€™m a liar.โ€ Oh, Pinocchio ๐Ÿคฅ! Similarly, in the second verse, she asserts, โ€œI say I wanna be a lone / I say I donโ€™t love you / But you know Iโ€™m a liar.โ€ ย The lyrics are self-explanatory โ€“ easy to follow and ultimately, enjoyable.ย  Furthermore, the vocals by Anita as well as her sisters are strong โ€“ harmonious.ย  Furthermore, the backdrop is distinct.ย  This is technically an R&B, record, but, the backdrop also has pop/rock influence, which makes it stand out. ย The guitar ๐ŸŽธ, organ, and tambourine are some of the most delicious instruments appearing on the track ๐Ÿคค. Apparently, Bruce Springsteen wasnโ€™t thrilled The Pointer Sisters scored a hit with ๐ŸŽต โ€œFireโ€. To that point, he hadnโ€™t reached the same heights on the pop chartsโ€ฆ this was his song, after all. Eventually, he broke through (๐ŸŽต โ€œDancing in the Darkโ€ earned him his highest charting single, at no. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100, in 1984).
