“You had your soul with you, I was in no mood…” Wellllllll, this is a surprise… well, sort of. Alternative rock band The National are returning ‘sooner than later’ with a new album, I Am Easy to Find (May 17, 2019).  Before the arrival of the Grammy-winning Sleep Well Beast (2017), fans had to wait four years for a proper follow-up to Trouble Will Find Me (2013).  This time, the wait isn’t even two years.  Matt Berninger and company not only announced their latest LP, but also unveiled a promo single, also the album’s opener, “You Had Your Soul with You.”  Notably, “You Had Your Soul with You” features guest vocals courtesy of Gail Ann Dorsey.

“You Had Your Soul with You” commences uniquely with a couple of measures of biting, glitching electronic sounds, before gaining stability with a full-fledged rock groove.  Beyond the groove, “You Had Your Soul with You” evolves into more of a traditional sound, while still incorporating some creative, accentuating cues (more on that in a moment). Matt Berninger sounds as compelling as ever, diving right into the first verse with his distinct baritone.  Behind him is a busy backdrop that’s never dull, incorporating ample rhythm between the drums, guitars and strings. Regarding the form of the record, there is no true chorus – only verses (three).  That said, the aforementioned lyrics are reiterated following the third verse.

Where does Gail Ann Dorsey get her big moment? The third verse, where she sings two lines of lyrics alone, before being joined by Berninger.  Expectedly, the results are nothing short of marvelous.

“I have owed it to my heart, every word I’ve said

You have no idea how hard I died when you left.”

Final Thoughts

Once again, The National shines.  “You Had Your Soul with You” is incredibly well-rounded, shining thanks to intriguing production, respectable songwriting, and fine vocals from both Matt Berninger and Gail Ann Dorsey.  This is an awesome tone-setter for I Am Easy to Find.
