“Enjoy yourself, enjoy yourself / Enjoy yourself with me.”
Honestly, it’s hard not to enjoy yourself when it comes to The Jacksons’ epic, funky gem, Enjoy Yourself. “Enjoy Yourself” is the opener from their 1976 gold-certified self-titled album, which was released via Epic Records following the brothers’ split from Motown. The Jacksons consisted of Michael Jackson (1958 – 2009), Marlon Jackson, Tito Jackson (1953 – 2024), Jackie Jackson, and Randy JacksonJermaine Jackson, part of The Jackson 5, was absent from The Jacksons from 1976 to 1983. A significant pop hit, “Enjoy Yourself” peaked at number six on the Billboard Hot 100. 13 years after its release, “Enjoy Yourself” was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America. It was written and produced by Kenneth Gamble and Leon Huff.

The musical accompaniment is EVERYTHING: big bass line, slick keyboard and guitar riffs, a sickening groove, and biting horns.  The backdrop is perfect fuel for The Jacksons’ fire, not that they weren’t already fired up. Michael Jackson is on autopilot as he masterfully handles the majority of the lead vocals, singing the first and second verses, and various ad-libs. “Come on, girl, while the night is young,” he sings in the first verse, and concludes, “Why don’t she let, let herself go ‘Woo!’” Woo, indeed! In the second verse, he continues to encourage her to live a little bit: “Let’s have some fun / Let’s have a good time, you and me /… Come on, girl, let’s get it, while the music’s runnin’ hot.” The chorus, excerpted earlier, is a surefire, unforgettable vibe, performed by the brothers. It’s not all MJ on lead vocals, though. Jackie Jackson performs the bridge, which is a big deal:

“Pretty girl, I’ve been watchin’ you
I can wipe away that frown
Ah, you and I could get together
We could tear the house down, we could tear the house down
We could tear the whole house down, woo!”

Woo! The outro cooks, continuing to encourage her to “enjoy yourself.” All told, Enjoy Yourselfis another epic, once-in-a-lifetime hit by The Jacksons.  The funkiness, high-flying vocals, and catchy lyrics speak for themselves.
