O

n 3BOPS, we are totally dedicated to keeping things L-I-T-E! Similar to 5ive Songs, there’s a topic and a short blurb, only with THREE songs instead of FIVE.  Yes, it’s a playlist, but it’s a miniature playlist that shouldn’t take much time to consume.  On the 59th edition of 3BOPS (2021), we select three awesome songs that are associated with the word SOON in some form or fashion.

1. Taylor Swift, “Soon You’ll Get Better”

Ft. The Chicks

💿 Lover • 🏷 Taylor Swift • 📅 2019

Taylor Swift, Lover [📷: Taylor Swift]“Holy orange bottles, each night, I pray to you / Desperate people find faith, so now, I pray to Jesus too.”  Love those lyrics! 🎙 Taylor Swift officially moved on/away from country music with her 2014 pop album, 💿 1989.  However, Swift has never abandoned it.  On her 2019 album 💿 Lover, 🎵 “Soon You’ll Get Better,” featuring 🎙 The Chicks, is indisputably a country track, with singer/songwriter sensibilities.

The Chicks provide Swift with backing vocals as opposed to appearing as the main attraction. No, 🎙 Natalie Maines never takes that lead role. While “Soon You’ll Get Better” doesn’t possess the same excitability as the shimmering pop cuts from Lover, it ranks among the best written songs.  Furthermore, “Soon You’ll Get Better” is impeccably performed.  To reiterate, while Swift moved on/away from country music, this record reminds us how/why Swift was once a highly successful country musician.

“Ooh-ah
You’ll get better
Ooh-ah
Soon, you’ll get better.”

Cumberbatch]“I shall wear a crown / I shall wear a crown / When it’s all over / When it’s all over.” The late, great 🎼✍ Thomas Whitfield (1954 – 1992) penned a gospel classic with 🎵 “Soon as I Get Home,” also referenced as 🎵 🎵 “I Shall Wear a Crown (Soon as I Get Home)”. Listen for a few short moments to any recording of the and you’ll feel the spiritual vibes. “Soon as I Get Home” is one of those records that’s built to hit you right in the soul. One particularly moving version of this popular classic arrived in 2019, courtesy of 🎙 Yolanda “Yoli” DeBerry and Scott O. Cumberbatch accompanying on piano. DeBerry performed “I Shall Wear a Crown” at a homegoing Service at First Church of God in Columbus, Ohio.

DeBerry’s voice is anointed, period.  Her tone is angelic – celestial – her ad-libs prodigious and spot-on, and her overall command and assertiveness are impressive to the nth degree.  As DeBerry sings, you truly feel it – the authenticity is undeniable.  Some people merely ‘sing’ a song but Yolanda, well, she ‘SANGS’ this one. Furthering this near indescribable spiritual experience is the backing gospel choir, which both feed off and amplify Yoli’s lead.  The thing is, with such simple yet resonating lyrics, you can see why this number evokes such happiness.  While earthly living ceases with this song (“When it’s all over”), the protagonist has been a believer – a good and faithful servant – and will spend eternity in heaven. As a preacher might say, “Ain’t that good news?”

“I’m gonna put on my robe,
Tell the story how I made it over.
Soon as I get home.”

3. August Alsina, “Soon as I Walk In”

💿 The Product III: stateofEMERGEncy • 🏷 Shake the World / EMPIRE • 📅 2020

August Alsina, The Product III: StateofEMERGEncy [📷: EMPIRE]“This is my motherfuckin’ song right here / Promise that it won’t be very long ‘til I’m there, yeah.” Charming, in an explicit, unapologetic way! R&B singer 🎙 August Alsina had some great moments on his 2020 album, 💿 The Product III: stateofEMERGEncy.  Sure, The Product III: stateofEMERGEncy ran too long, but there were plenty of highlights to be found.  One such highlight is 🎵 “Soon as I Walk in,” which appears as the 15th track on this 27-track affair.

“That Chanel number nine, really worth it / Got me rubbin’ on your legs and they so smooth / Got a nigga bangin’ on the door for you.” Ooh wee August!  Notably, “Soon as I Walk in” effectively (and sexily) remixes the 🎙 Tink record, 🎵 “Soon as U Walk In”.  “Soon as U Walk In” appeared on her 2019 album, 💿 Voicemails. She briefly appears on this remix, but essentially, it’s all August on this lush, slow jam.  Clearly, the modus operandi is hot, passionate sex.

“Baby, since you’re ready
To perform, to perform
Girl, just say come get it
And it’s on
And it’s on.”
