Sam Driborr, Out of the Closet | Beaming with Pride 🏳️‍🌈

In the 48^th edition of Beaming with Pride 🏳️‍🌈 (2024), we highlight the song, “Out of the Closet” performed by Sam Driborr.

Beaming with Pride 🏳️‍🌈 celebrates, embraces, and spotlights songs by LGBTQ musicians or allies.  Here, we provide background and insight into musician(s) and analyze + go gaga over the decadent bops served up.  When the music dictates deeper, more transcendent discussion, we ensure the point is fully articulated.  All styles of music are welcome while the songs can be classics or brand-spanking new. So, without further ado, in the 48^th edition of Beaming with Pride 🏳️‍🌈 (2024), we highlight “Out of the Closet” performed by Sam Driborr.

“I feel like a prism / Refracting light into a burst of colors to view.”  Those opening lyrics from the first verse of “Out of the Closet” showcase the brilliant pen of Portland, Oregon singer, songwriter, and producer, Sam Driborr. There’s also physics referenced which is cool 😎! He continues singing, optimistically, “I’m using my wisdom / To live each day like my world is brand new.” Those are wise, thought-provoking lyrics.  Driborr is embracing liberation! He is not stuck in the closet, which is a hairy place to be as an LGBTQ+ 🏳️‍🌈 individual. Fear, shame, and internalized homophobia can be a death trap. That is NOT the way that life is meant to be lived.

Instead of hiding the rainbow, he proudly displays it.  Bust out those Pride flags! He’s living his best life on this uplifting anthem.  Fittingly, “Out of The Closet,” written and produced by Driborr, was released just before Pride month in 2024.  Sam sings authentically and confidently from the beginning. The songwriting is impeccable. Both verses are poetically penned. The pre-chorus and chorus sections are sublime too. “One step forward / Is another step towards / An age of progress and change,” he sings hopefully in the pre-chorus, continuing, “We may be older / But together we’re bolder / To see a new system arranged.” Yaaasss! The chorus is top-notch:

Out of the closet!

To know the meaning of being free!

Not bound by insecurities!

Out of the closet!

Not captive by indecision!

I’m born this way

Won’t go back again

I refuse to be the shirt I never fit in

“Out of the Closet” should resonate with members of the LGBTQ+ 🏳️‍🌈 community. Who wants to live stuck in the closet? But, this is a record that could also speak to those who don’t identify as LGBTQ+.  If you are bound by something, doesn’t it feel better to become unbound and be free? Who wouldn’t “refuse to be the shirt I never fit it” after all? Sam Driborr dropped a gem.
