Ruel, Ready (EP) [Photo Credit: RCA]15-year old Australian pop singer Ruel sounds more mature beyond his years on “Younger,” an advanced single from his debut EP, ‘Ready.’

“Deep in my heart I / Know that it’s over… / So I can’t call you / Call you my brother / The way we used to / When we were younger, younger.”  15-year old Australian pop artist Ruel reminisces back to his youth on “Younger,” specifically a friendship that has since ceased.  On the first verse, he references their rebellious times together, specifically sneaking out and “walking the streets at night.” He closes the verse with the first hint that two friends have grown apart and went their separate ways: “You left me in the dark / While you drink in the park / Never be the same again.”

Ruel follows with the pre-chorus, which keeps the narrative on how things truly aren’t the same.  He’s clearly perturbed, leading into the aforementioned chorus where the brotherhood has ceased.  On the second verse, he mentions how his former friend has physically changed, singing, “I didn’t even recognize you.” On the bridge, however, he is trying to be assertive in rekindling things, but his efforts are going nowhere.

Final Thoughts

Ruel is on-point throughout “Younger.” First and foremost, this 15-year old has an awesome voice, filled with expression, nuance, and soulfulness. He definitely sounds older.  The grit and the passion he sings with – magnificent.  Secondly, the message conveyed through the songwriting is relatable to everyone on some level.  Who hasn’t had a friend that they lost contact with or grew apart from?  Finally, the soulful, gospel-infused production is fitting given the yearning, regretful, and reminiscent nature of this record.  If you don’t ‘feel the feels’ while listening to this, something is truly wrong.  Add Ruel to your playlist and listening rotation ASAP.  #Not Your Ordinary 15-year old by any means. #Wunderkind.
