On 3BOPS, we are totally dedicated to keeping things L-I-T-E! Similar to 5ive Songs, thereโ€™s a topic and a short blurb, only with THREE songs instead of FIVE.ย  Yes, itโ€™s a playlist, but itโ€™s a miniature playlist that shouldnโ€™t take much time to consume.ย  On this edition of 3BOPS, we select three awesome songs that are associated with READING or BOOKS ๐Ÿ“š in some form or fashion.

1. Lucky Daye & Tiana Major9, โ€œOn Readโ€

๐Ÿ’ฟ Table for Two โ€ข ๐Ÿท Keep Cool / RCA โ€ข ๐Ÿ“… 2021

Lucky Daye, Table for Two [๐Ÿ“ท: Keep Cool / RCA]On follow up ๐ŸŽต โ€œOn Readโ€ (which features some genius โ€˜messageโ€™ sound effects), ๐ŸŽ™ Lucky Daye and ๐ŸŽ™ Tiana Major9 are considered equal partners โ€“ co-lead artists.ย  On this standout from the ๐Ÿ† Grammy-nominated singer/songwriterโ€™s 2021 EP, ๐Ÿ’ฟ Table for Two, Daye takes first blood, over a backdrop that does a fabulous job of balancing old- and new school. On the one hand, we have soulful guitar and backing vocals, while on the other hand, weโ€™ve got some trunk-rattling sub bass.ย  Similarly, Daye fits in with the contemporary breed of R&B singer while keeping that foot in the door of the past.

Tiana Major9 also puts in work, providing the response with that charming British accent.ย  They join forces on the chorus following Major9โ€™s verse, before we get another spoken word outro from Daye.

2. Alec Benjamin, โ€œThe Book of You & Iโ€

๐Ÿ’ฟ These Two Windows โ€ข ๐Ÿ“… 2020

Alec Benjamin, These Two Windows [๐Ÿ“ท: Alec Benjamin]โ€œDonโ€™t tell me that itโ€™s over, the book of you and I / Now youโ€™ve scribbled out my name / And youโ€™ve erased my favorite linesโ€ฆโ€ ๐ŸŽต โ€œThe Book of You & Iโ€ is a surefire highlight ๐Ÿ’ฟThese Two Windows, the debut album by ๐ŸŽ™ Alec Benjamin. Benjamin reminisces on a relationship from his past, one that was quite difficult to move beyond.ย  Poetic throughout the course of the record, he best sums up his feelings when the end came (aforementioned and continuing as): โ€œThere were so many chapters that we never got to write / Like cereal for dinner and staying up all nightโ€ฆโ€

Is it a bit schmaltzy? Perhaps, but at the same time, I like the vulnerability that Alec exhibits. ย Thereโ€™s a degree of sensitivity, something thatโ€™s refreshing to hear men discuss.

3. Death from Above 1979, โ€œHoly Brooksโ€

๐Ÿ’ฟ Outrage! Is Now โ€ข ๐Ÿท Warner โ€ข ๐Ÿ“… 2017

Death from Above 1979, Outrage! Is Now [๐Ÿ“ท: Warner]๐ŸŽต โ€œHoly Booksโ€ definitely stands out from ๐Ÿ’ฟ Outrage! Is Now, the third studio album by Canadian punk-rock duo ๐ŸŽ™ Death from Above 1979 (๐ŸŽ™ Jesse F. Keeler and ๐ŸŽ™ Sebastien Grainger). โ€œHoly Booksโ€ is souped-up from the jump. The guitars sound menacing, rather hellish.ย  Grainger delivers aggressive and passionate vocals.ย  Lyrically, itโ€™s clear that heโ€™s not onboard with the whole God-fearing, Christian thing, best summarized by the chorus: โ€œI donโ€™t go for no holy books / Those ancient rhymes they ainโ€™t got no hooks.โ€ The tempo remains quick for nearly the first two minutes.ย  A change of pace arrives at around the 1:55 mark.ย  The tone changes along with the tempo โ€“ the exuberant rebelliousness fades.ย ย  This is an unexpected, but brilliant instrumental shift.

The original scheme returns right before the three-minute mark, reviving a sense of familiarity.ย  Here, Death from Above 1979 return to the infectious, atheistic chorus.ย  Ultimately, โ€œHoly Booksโ€ is captivating to the nth degree. The music is energetic, and the vocals are filled with passion and angst.
