The vibes, the vibes, those Throwback Vibez 🕶️🎶! Throwback Vibez 🕶️🎶 is a column that celebrates awesome songs from the past. The records that grace this column are older, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they’re ancient – no fossils 🦴! All genres of music are welcome. In the 145th edition of Throwback Vibez 🕶️🎶 (2025), we recollect and reflect on “Body Heat” performed by Quincy Jones.
“Can you feel it? / Touching you / Don’t you feel it?” Oh, snap, Quincy Jones (1933 – 2024)! The lyrics are referring to that body heat! The vibes are highly sensual on “Body Heat”, the opener from the musical visionary’s 1974 gold-certified, Grammy-nominated album, Body Heat. Body Heat (the album) peaked at number six on the Billboard 200, earning Jones the highest charting album of his career. He penned “Body Heat” with Bruce Fisher, Stan Richardson, and Leon Ware. Jones and Ray Brown produced it. In addition to their writing credits, Fisher and Ware provide the vocals in the song.
“Body Heat” is a funky and incredibly soulful track. Quincy Jones was renowned for his jazz contributions, particularly early in his illustrious career. On “Body Heat,” he plunges into soul music with huge success. The sound of the record plays a sizable role in its success. Among the decadent ear candy is an awesome percussive groove (in addition to drums), sensual-sounding guitar, warm keys (including organ and synths), and a big fat bass line. The marvelous arrangement also includes biting horns, characteristic of both jazz and soul. The impressive instrumental matches the sensuality conveyed vocally and lyrically. “Body Heat” is suggestive: “My temperature’s risin’ / And it’s not surprisin’ / But when you’re close to me, girl / It’s so tantalizin’.” We know where the lyrics are going, but it’s far different than 21st-century music, which would ditch the innuendo and go straight for the kill! Still, the likes of “But just wait ‘til I get hot / ‘Cause I’m a genie nonfiction / Rub me ‘til I feel the friction” raise eyebrows, among other parts… The chorus is the crème de la crème:
“When we meet
Ain’t it sweet?
And when we greet
Feel that body heat
Feel that body
Can you feel it? Can you feel it? Can you feel it?
Feel that body heat
Feel that body heat
Body heat.”
A true icon, Quincy Jones, with the help of some talented personnel, dropped another timeless musical gem with “Body Heat”. The temperature 🌡️ = scorching hot 🥵!
