The vibes, the vibes, those Throwback Vibez ๐Ÿ•ถ๏ธ๐ŸŽถ! Throwback Vibez ๐Ÿ•ถ๏ธ๐ŸŽถ is a column that celebrates awesome songs from the past.ย  The records that grace this column are older, but that doesnโ€™t necessarily mean that theyโ€™re ancient โ€“ no fossils ๐Ÿฆด! All genres of music are welcome. In the 138th edition of Throwback Vibez ๐Ÿ•ถ๏ธ๐ŸŽถ (2023), we recollect and reflect on ๐ŸŽต โ€œOne Hundred Waysโ€, performed by ๐ŸŽ™ Quincy Jones featuring ๐ŸŽ™ James Ingram.ย

Quincy Jones, The Dude [๐Ÿ“ท: UMG Recordings, Inc.]โ€œLove her today / Find one hundred ways.โ€ Aww โ€“ how chivalrous, dedicated, and sweet to the nth degree, ๐ŸŽ™ James Ingram! ๐ŸŽต โ€œOne Hundred Waysโ€ appears as the seventh track on the 1981, ๐ŸŽ™ Quincy Jones album, ๐Ÿ’ฟ The Dude.ย  The Dude added to Jonesโ€™ ๐Ÿ† Grammy hardware (heโ€™s won 28 Grammys), while the late Ingram, the vocalist on โ€œOne Hundred Ways,โ€ won the ๐Ÿ† Grammy for Best R&B Vocal Performance, Male. Take one listen to โ€œOne Hundred Ways,โ€ and itโ€™s plain to hear why it was Grammy-worthy and helped propel The Dude to platinum status ๐Ÿ’ช. ย The record itself was pop hit, peaking respectably at no. 14 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1982.

โ€œIn your arms tonight

Sheโ€™ll reflect

That she owes you the sweetest of debts

If she wants to pay

Find one hundred ways.โ€

classicIt should be noted that neither Jones nor Ingram penned โ€œOne Hundred Ways.โ€ Jones is responsible for the incredibly lush, smooth production. The sound is idiomatic of the refined, quiet storm brand of R&B that ruled in the 1980s. As for the songwriting, those honors belong to ๐ŸŽผ โœ Benjamin Wright, Kathy Wakefield, and Tony Coleman. All three writers did a fabulous job of composing thoughtful, love-driven lyrics, and tuneful melodies.ย  The harmonic progression that underlies is sweet too, leaning into jazz extending beyond the standard I-IV-V ๐Ÿค“. Of course, it is Ingram, the perfect artist to perform โ€œOne Hundred Waysโ€ that brings it to life.ย  Does he ever perspire as he lends his expressive, nuanced pipes to Wright, Wakefield, and Colemanโ€™s epic song? I donโ€™t believe so. Love never sounded so lit in his hands as it does on the R&B gem, ๐ŸŽต โ€œOne Hundred Waysโ€!
