PRETTYMUCH, Summer on You [Photo Credit: Simco]Safe to say, the blood is running hot for the young men of PRETTYMUCH on their summer-ready single, “Summer on You.” The main idea: making love.

For those of us who thought, hoped, or lamented the fact that the boy band had faded, it hasn’t.  Leave it to Simon Cowell to resurrect the boy band from the dead.  His latest crop of heartthrobs is American-Canadian boy band, PRETTYMUCH. Zion Kuwonu (Canadian), Brandon Arreaga, Edwin Honoret, Austin Porter, and Nick Mara have been slowly, but surely building their career as pop’s next boy band.  What makes this particular collective interesting is how hip they are.  This boy band is in tune with the times, incorporating elements of hip-hip and urban music into their script.  Following the release of their debut project, PRETTYMUCH an EP, the boys are back with single, “Summer on You.”

“Summer on You” encompasses what you expect from boy band – girls and of course ‘suggesting’ what boys and girls do.  Brandon kicks things off with the intro, which later becomes the chorus.  The gist of the chorus is this: Broke, ample time for his girl, gonna get paid, buy the sun buy champagne for him and his girl, taking it to the [bed] room.  From there, sex is the focal point, whether it’s “Making love ‘til daylight” or “Naked in the moonlight.”  Sure, both verses, sung by Zion and Austin respectively, mention employment, but it all leads to sex.  Nick delivers the bridge, again referencing being broke, sunshine NOT being necessary, and suggesting, “We can stay and sip warm beer / While holed up in a room.”

Final Thoughts

Honestly, this slick urban-pop, boy band joint is a bit more sexual than the work of the boy bands of the past.  It doesn’t cross the line mind you, but, it fits within the explicitness of modern music without being too explicit… something like that.  The songwriting is a bit flimsy – the work/sex connection works better on “Work” by Fifth Harmony – but the boys make their point.  Interestingly, as they sing about beer and champagne, none of them are ‘legal’ to drink as publication date – just saying.
