Sometimes, things can be totally Lost in Translation.ย  Perhaps thatโ€™s whatโ€™s going on with Playboi Carti and his first single of 2020, โ€œ@MEH.โ€ The trap rapper has had his share of success, though personally, Iโ€™ve always found him to be an acquired taste.ย  Listening to โ€œ@MEHโ€ only further confirms that Carti doesnโ€™t necessarily speak to me from a musical standpoint.ย  Maybe itโ€™s the age difference as well as how much rap has changed. Regardless, Iโ€™m very meh on โ€œ@MEH.โ€

Stating the pros first, jetsonmade, Neeko Baby, and Deskhop give Playboi Carti a solid foundation โ€“ โ€˜LITโ€™ production.ย  Itโ€™s what you expect from a track record โ€“ banging drums, colorful synths, and jam-packed with energy.ย  Another pro from โ€œ@MEH?โ€ This record is short, clocking in at under three minutes.ย  Thatโ€™s a win.ย  Finally, the last pro would be Cartiโ€™s energy as he delivers his rhymes. ย So, the pros, to recap are production, length, and energy.

Now the cons.ย  What exactly is โ€œ@MEHโ€ supposed to be? This song is a trip. Why? Playboi Cartiโ€™s vocal tone is off-putting, not to mention his diction and pronunciation.ย  While heโ€™s energetic and unapologetic, thereโ€™s clearly a lack of lyrical substance.ย  โ€œI ride with the chopper, the stick, yeah / These bitches ready to kill, yeahโ€ definitely isnโ€™t profound in the least. Violent, mind you, but not profound or transcendent. ย And, of course, itโ€™s no surprise thereโ€™s reference to the police: โ€œIโ€™m really โ€˜bout that shit, we at the police (Pop out, yeah).โ€ Of course, if we rely on the chorus, Carti has a problem with โ€œPussy ass niggas.โ€ While much of โ€œ@MEHโ€ is quite pedestrian lyrically, or at least โ€˜been there, done that,โ€™ give him credit for one eyebrow raising, low lyrical blow: โ€œI already know he sweet, that bitch a lesbian.โ€

Final Thoughtsย

No need to sugarcoat it โ€“ โ€œ@MEHโ€ just wasnโ€™t for โ€˜MEH.โ€™ At best, the single is truly meh.ย  There are some pros, but in my eyes, the cons are too much. ย If youโ€™re a fan of Playboi Carti, well, you probably consider this fire.ย  If youโ€™re not a fan, or like me, donโ€™t totally see the allure, well, โ€œ@MEHโ€ wonโ€™t swing the pendulum or move the needle.
