elcome to Sunday Refresh ๐Ÿ™, a column that seeks to highlight inspirational songs to uplift the spirit.ย  The songs that appear on Sunday Refresh may or may not be faith-based or religious; the goal is for them to make you feel better โ€“ refreshed.ย  So, for the 11th edition of Sunday Refresh, we highlight ๐ŸŽต โ€œSomething Happens (Jesus)โ€ as performed by ๐ŸŽ™ Bishop Paul S. Morton, Sr..

Who better to provide a Sunday Refresh than Bishop Morton? Thatโ€™s right, the father of ๐Ÿ† Grammy-winner ๐ŸŽ™ PJ Morton is renowned for both his ministry and music ministry. Morton can turn Contemporary Christian Music (CCM) songs into more rousing, moving performances.ย  A prime example is his cover of the Michael W. Smith classic, ๐ŸŽต โ€œLet It Rainโ€.ย  Of course, heโ€™s terrific when it comes to gospel, both traditional and contemporary.ย  Here, we highlight his epic, seven-and-a-half-minute gem, โ€œSomething Happens (Jesus)โ€ (๐Ÿ’ฟ Best Days Yet, 2012).

On โ€œSomething Happens (Jesus),โ€ like many a CCM song, the lyrics are simplistic โ€“ easy to remember and sing along by the congregation.ย  Even with few lyrics and a lack of depth-laden songwriting, the message is potent. โ€œJesus / Something special / Supernatural about your name,โ€ the choir sings reverently, continuing, โ€œJesus / Something happens / When I mentionโ€ฆโ€ Beyond those repeated lyrics, carried by the choir and ad-libbed and riffed on by the Rt. Reverend, we move on two other key, uplifting passages.ย  The first is the songโ€™s namesake:

โ€œJesus, Jesus, Jesus,
Jesus, Jesus, Jesus,
Something happens
When I call you.โ€

From there, we get repetition on the lyrics, โ€œWhen I call you /โ€ฆ Something Happens.โ€ Again, the lyrics arenโ€™t complicated โ€“ theyโ€™re accessible to people of all ages within the congregation.

Sure, โ€œSomething Happens (Jesus)โ€ is geared more to Christians and believers, but like so many of the songs featured in this column, everyone should take something away after listening.ย
