elcome to Sunday Refresh 🙏, a column that seeks to highlight inspirational songs to uplift the spirit. The songs that appear on Sunday Refresh may or may not be faith-based or religious; the goal is for them to make you feel better – refreshed. So, for the 11th edition of Sunday Refresh, we highlight 🎵 “Something Happens (Jesus)” as performed by 🎙 Bishop Paul S. Morton, Sr..Who better to provide a Sunday Refresh than Bishop Morton? That’s right, the father of 🏆 Grammy-winner 🎙 PJ Morton is renowned for both his ministry and music ministry. Morton can turn Contemporary Christian Music (CCM) songs into more rousing, moving performances. A prime example is his cover of the Michael W. Smith classic, 🎵 “Let It Rain”. Of course, he’s terrific when it comes to gospel, both traditional and contemporary. Here, we highlight his epic, seven-and-a-half-minute gem, “Something Happens (Jesus)” (💿 Best Days Yet, 2012).
On “Something Happens (Jesus),” like many a CCM song, the lyrics are simplistic – easy to remember and sing along by the congregation. Even with few lyrics and a lack of depth-laden songwriting, the message is potent. “Jesus / Something special / Supernatural about your name,” the choir sings reverently, continuing, “Jesus / Something happens / When I mention…” Beyond those repeated lyrics, carried by the choir and ad-libbed and riffed on by the Rt. Reverend, we move on two other key, uplifting passages. The first is the song’s namesake:
“Jesus, Jesus, Jesus,
Jesus, Jesus, Jesus,
Something happens
When I call you.”
From there, we get repetition on the lyrics, “When I call you /… Something Happens.” Again, the lyrics aren’t complicated – they’re accessible to people of all ages within the congregation.
Sure, “Something Happens (Jesus)” is geared more to Christians and believers, but like so many of the songs featured in this column, everyone should take something away after listening.
