ring on the controversy! Controversial Tunes 😈🎶 is a column that provides background information and insight into songs that raised eyebrows and totally stirred the pot.  The records that grace Controversial Tunes are old and new alike, with all genres of music welcome.  On the 3rd edition of Controversial Tunes (2022), we explore the controversy behind the song, 🎵 “Suicide Solution” by 🎙 Ozzy Osbourne.

Theme & Lyrics

grimacing emoji maskAnytime suicide is referenced, the controversy meter ticks up. A song named 🎵 “Suicide Solution” raises eyebrows from its title alone. Put two and two together, and it seems without hearing the lyrics, 🎙 Ozzy Osbourne is endorsing suicide as the solution.  Yikes! Apparently, this 1980 record from 💿 Blizzard of Ozz even prompted a lawsuit from the family of a fan who committed suicide.  Why? The lyrics purportedly encouraged ending it all via suicide.  As controversial and dark as Osbourne is, the assertion that he’d promote suicide would be the lowest of lows from him.  Perhaps he says it best regarding interpretations of the song: “People get the fucking thing wrong”.

Bitmoji Image“Suicide Solution” is probably a bad title, but it’s mostly because the ‘solution’ part is misinterpreted.  From the start, Osbourne speaks of the ills of alcohol.  Alcohol, of course, is a – fill in the blank – SUBSTANCE, *ding, ding, ding, ding, ding*! Basically, Osbourne sings about drinking too much and ultimately, drinking yourself to death.  You can die of alcoholism and alcohol poisoning, so, there’s truth when he sings, “Thought that you’d escape The Reaper / You can’t escape the Master Keeper.”  Don’t get it twisted – the content is dark and morbid – but Ozzy speaks more about how consuming too much solution (alcohol) is a means of suicide because it’s going to end badly.

“Breaking laws, knocking doors, but there’s no one at home

Made your bed, rest your head, but you lie there and moan

Where to hide, Suicide is the only way out

Don’t you know what it’s really about.”

Bitmoji ImageBesides the suicidal angle, apparently, there’s some controversy about who wrote “Suicide Solution” as well as whom it was written about.  Oh, brother!  While Osbourne asserts he wrote the lyrics about deceased 🎙 AC/DC frontman 🎙 Bon Scott, bassist 🎙 Bob Daisley asserts he wrote it about Ozzy. Interesting, interesting, interesting 🤔!

Final Thoughts 💭

Bitmoji ImageUltimately, one thing’s for sure.  🎵 “Suicide Solution” easily earns its place among the most controversial songs of all time.  It all starts with the S-word – SUICIDE.  Pair it with another s-word, SOLUTION, and you’ve created a gigantic SS – a sh!tstorm! Outlandish Rock 🎸🤘? HELL YEAH!
