“W

hat I do makes me wonder if I’m alight / Holding back feelings like it’s the end of my life.” Woo – don’t die 🎙 Omar Apollo! After wowing on 🎵 “Invincible” featuring 🎙 Daniel Caesar, the alternative R&B/pop singer/songwriter keeps momentum going strong on 🎵 “Killing Me”.  “Killing Me” marks the fourth single released in advance of his full-length, debut album, 💿 Ivory.  This go-round, Apollo is solo without the assist of anybody else.  Although he is the sole songwriter, he produces “Killing Me” alongside 🎛 Mike Hector, 🎛 Carter Lang, and 🎛 Oscar Santander.

The sound of “Killing Me” isn’t ‘killer,’ but it is certainly a big time V-I-B-E.  Omar Apollo excels with a chill, guitar-fueled backdrop. The production has an R&B aesthetic. Vocally, Omar sings with ease, never forcing things.  Even his scandalous f-bomb slips right off the tongue with little force: “Love me like I’m gonna die / Fuck me like you fantasize.” Woo! Thematically, “Killing Me” isn’t about murder but rather those pesky matters of the heart – LOVE.  “That’s right, you’re killing me,” he asserts in the chorus, as he analyzes the universal four-letter word.

Final Thoughts 💭

seal of approvalOnce more, Omar Apollo “shines bright like a diamond.” While I prefer “Invincible” to “Killing Me,” “Killing Me” is another winner for this impressive Mexican American musician.  He sings well, the music is chill, and the theme and lyrics are enjoyable, relatable, and effective.  Ivory should be a tremendous debut effort!
