On this edition of 5ive Songs, we select five intriguing songs that are associated with OLD or explore oldness in some form or fashion.
On 5ive Songs, we (I) keep things short and sweet â no extra calories or needless fluff. Thereâs a topic, five songs, and a short blurb that doesnât exceed a paragraph. Yes, itâs a playlist, but itâs a miniature playlist that shouldnât take much time to consume. On this edition of 5ive Songs, we select five intriguing songs that are associated with OLD or explore oldness in some form or fashion.
1. Lil Nas X, âOld Town Roadâ
Ft. Billy Ray Cyrus
7 (EP) âąÂ Columbia âąÂ 2019
âYeah, Iâm gonna take my horse to the old town road / Iâm gonna ride âtil it canât go no more.â History-making, black LGBTQ+ artist Lil Nas X is responsible for the countrified/melodic hip-hop smash, âOld Town Roadâ (7 â EP) that topped the Billboard Hot 100 for a record 19 weeks! âOld Town Road â Remix,â the most popular version, features Billy Ray Cyrus, singing the aforementioned refrain (once), as well as the third verse. Â
âOld Town Roadâ is quite charming for a variety of reasons including lyrics that play off of clichĂ©s associated with country music. Furthermore, the hip-hop beat, coupled with âcountry-folkâ guitars, fueled by a prominent Nine Inch Nails sample (â34 Ghosts IVâ), add to the sheer excellence. Although a novel cut, itâs one for the ages!
2. 5 Seconds of Summer, âOld Meâ
CALM âą Interscope âąÂ 2020
âOld Meâ (CALM) exemplifies the modern pop sound. There are guitars but synths and urban beat ârule the roostâ on this 5 Seconds of Summer standout.  No worries â the boys still have an edge, dropping a couple of swear words along the way, whether itâs the regretful âAnd I did some shit I never shouldâve done,â or âHad to fuck it up before I really got to know me.â
Potty mouth or not, Luke Hemmings is at least regretful about past mistakes, actions, and playing a poor role as a lover. âOld Meâ is a relatable, winning pop record.
3. Kesha, âOld Flames (Canât Hold a Candle to You)â
Ft. Dolly Parton
Rainbow âą Kemosabe âą 2017
One of the very best songs from Rainbow, the 2017 album by Grammy-nominated pop staar Kesha, doesnât arrive until near the end. âOld Flames (Canât Hold a Candle to You)â is certainly worth the wait. It also happens to be a cover, co-written by Keshaâs mom, Pebe Sebert.
âOld Flamesâ actually marks the second country song from the album, with this one being most successful. Helping the cause is the fact she enlists country royalty, Dolly Parton, who also once covered this gem. Ultimately, the duet is magical, memorable, ranking among the crĂšme de la crĂšme of the pop starâs career.
4. blackbear, âI Miss the old uâ
Digital druglord âą Alamo / beartrap / Interscope âąÂ 2017
âI miss the old you / Before you fucked G-Eazy / Both the Migos tooâŠâ âI Miss the old uâ (digital druglord) finds blackbear pissed at his girl â understatement. Essentially, sheâs become shallow in his eyes, hence losing her authenticity. His descriptions are definitely profane, including characterizing her as âungratefulâ and later âcold.â On the chorus, he blames her for his issues in which HE misses the old HIM!
âI miss the old me I miss the way I used to be I miss the old me And now these drugs controllinâ me Itâs all your fault, baby Still reaching for the Henny.â
5. CeeLo Green, âOld Fashionedâ
The Lady Killer âąÂ Elektra âą 2010
âMy loveâs old fashioned / But it still works, just the way it is / This love is classic / And not just, simple because, I say it is.â The biggest CeeLo Green from his 2010 album The Lady Killer is undoubtedly âFuck Youâ â itâs inescapable! That said, his retro soul record, âOld Fashionedâ is much classier, featuring one of the most soulful vocal performances of his illustrious career.
Sure, a record this vintage-sounding wasnât idiomatic of 2010, but thatâs part of what made it quite charming and refreshing. I mean, oldies definitely have ample character, and âOld Fashionedâ certainly falls in that same category.
