Nick Jonas, Spaceman [📷: Island]Nick Jonas makes a respectable, relatable comeback on “Spaceman,” the promo single from his first album in five years, Spaceman.

It has been five years since a new 🎙 Nick Jonas solo album arrived.  Well, the wait is over as the Jo Bro returns mid-March 2021 with 💿 Spaceman, the long-awaited follow-up to 💿 Last Year was Complicated (2016).  Fittingly, what better way than to commence the promotion for a new album than its title track, hence, Jonas drops 🎵 “Spaceman” as the first single (not to be confused with 🎙 The Killers’ song from the aughts.  Question: Is it any good? Well, why don’t you “f**k around and find out” – or simply read on and find out!

First things first, “Spaceman” was written by a team comprised of 🎼✍ Greg Kurstin, 🎼✍ Maureen “Mozella” McDonald, and Jonas. In addition to his role as a writer, Kurstin also produces the track. It should come as no surprise that “Spaceman” features sleek production work, firmly planted in 2021.  Furthermore, this backdrop fits the urban-pop sensibilities that Nick Jonas has consistently exhibited as an adult pop musician.  This is particularly pronounced on the chorus, where the influence of hip-hop can be heard with the banging, souped-up beat.

Beyond the backdrop, Nick Jonas sounds great.  He gives us plenty of middle register during the verses, while flexing more of his upper register (namely falsetto) on the chorus.  Going into this record, had the vocals been subpar, we would’ve had issues.  As far as the songwriting, Jonas sings and reflects about the state of the world with politics, coronavirus, and most of all, feeling isolated – as if he’s in outer space. It’s a relatable theme.

Final Thoughts 💭

Ultimately, there’s lots to like about “Spaceman.”  Great production, relatable songwriting, and a respectable vocal performance by Nick Jonas.  Does he ‘knock it out of the park’ with the promo single from Spaceman?  I wouldn’t go that far but, I’m excited to see what else he brings to the table on his new album.  Seems like he’s eschewing profanity this go-round.
