Welcome to 5ive Songs, where we keep things short and sweet – no extra calories or needless fluff! There’s a theme/topic, five songs, and a short blurb.  Yes, it’s a playlist, but it’s a miniature playlist that shouldn’t take much time to consume.  In the 65th edition of 5ive Songs (2022), we select five songs that are associated with NECK in some form or fashion.  Okay, let’s get into it!

1. Charlie Puth, “Marks On My Neck”

💿 Charlie • 🏷 Atlantic • 📅 2022

Charlie Puth, Charlie [📷: Atlantic]“All I got left are the marks on my neck / After you let me go, oh / It’s hard to forget when you messed up my head / ‘Cause I let you get too close, yeah.” Well now! After being sad on his previous 💿 Charlie track (🎵 “When You’re Sad I’m Sad”), 🎙 Charlie Puth picks up the pace. Charles in Charge sings about his neck – 🎵 “Marks On My Neck”! My, my, my! Technically, he’s still feeling upset.

“Why did I let you, I let you, I let you

Get all under my skin?

Wasn’t worth it.”

On “Marks On My Neck,” Puth is assertive vocally, matching the premise of the track.  Likewise, the instrumental literally hits you in the chest like 💥.  Ah, those marks on [his] neck! One of the best lines comes when Charlie sings, “I tried to cover it, cover it, cover it with foundation / Didn’t help it / Tried to get over you, over you, over you but you dug in / And I felt it.” My, my, my – those are some deep marks! She did a number on my boy!

2. Pusha T, JAY-Z & Pharrell Williams, “Neck & Wrist”

💿 It’s Almost Dry • 🏷 Getting Out Our Dreams, Inc. / Def Jam • 📅 2022

Pusha T, It's Almost Dry [📷: Getting Out Our Dreams, Inc. / Def Jam]Anytime 🏆 Grammy-nominated rapper 🎙 Pusha T collaborates with 🏆 Grammy-winning rapper, 🎙 Jay-Z, it’s a good thing 💯! 🎵 “Neck & Wrist” finds the two electrifying rappers collaborating once again, on Push’s 2022 album, 💿 It’s Almost Dry. Of course, it should also be noted that both were drug dealers. Besides Hov, Push is also assisted by 🎙 🎛 Pharrell Williams once more, as a vocalist and producer.

The centerpiece of “Neck & Wrist” is the chorus, which Williams gets the memorable, titular line. Pusha T is on autopilot in the first verse, giving us a high with the coke references (“The Colgate kilo, the hood needs whitening”).  Of course, Jay-Z goes off in the second verse: “I blew bird money, y’all talkin’ Twitter feed / We got different Saab stories, save your soliloquies.” Woo! What more can be said? “Neck and wrist don’t lie,” baby!

3. Kali Uchis, “Your Teeth in my Neck”

💿 Isolation • 🏷 Virgin • 📅 2018

Kali Uchis, Isolation [📷: Virgin]“What do you do it for? / Rich man keeps getting richer, taking from the poor.” Well, unfortunately, 🎙 Kali Uchis, that’s how the world works, and it totally sucks.  The good news is, on 🎵 “Your Teeth in My Neck,” a highlight from her 2018 debut album, 💿 Isolation, the groove is infectious – simply irresistible! One thing that stands out is the fact that 🎙 Kali Uchis taps into her Columbian roots. My girl exhibits ample personality.

Of course, that personality is warranted given the real talk she spits. Uchis provides musical commentary on the music industry, especially how it often takes advantage of naïve, up-and-coming artists.  “I’ve been working so hard just to give you more,” she sings in the first pre-chorus.  Of course, the larger commentary goes to greed exhibited, hence, why “It’s your teeth in my neck.” The second verse features a very emotional, thought-provoking lyrical moment: “Kill us all off, they’d take our worth they pay us dirt.”  “Your Teeth in My Neck” is a call to action: pay us what we’re worth and stop being so damn greedy!

4. The National, “Turtleneck”

💿 Sleep Well Beast • 🏷 4AD • 📅 2017

The National, Sleep Well Beast [📷: 4AD]“Oh, my mother, let your daughter dance with me / I’d like to spin her wild around the cottonwood tree / There’s something about her eyes, I think her roots are rotten / This must be the reason she wears her hair up in knots, oh no…” 🎵 “Turtleneck” appears as the sixth track on 🎙 The National’s  brilliant, 🏆 Grammy-winning, 2017 album, 💿 Sleep Well Beast. It’s a well-rounded, totally enjoyable record that brings out the best in front man 🎙 Matt Berninger.

In the context of Sleep Well Beast, “Turtleneck” directly contrasts the sweetness of the song that precedes it, 🎵 “Born to Beg”. The lyrics are quite colorful, intense, and intriguing.  The pre-chorus and chorus are absolutely ferocious.  More notably, they are symbolic, referencing politics (Donald Trump in particular), religion, society, and such.

“This is so embarrassing

Ah, we’re pissing fits

Crying on our doorsteps in t-shirts loose and ripped

Some of them so out of style I cannot save them

They’ll just get whatever my salvation gave them

… Hide your backbone, shrug your shoulders

Give the gift that fits your head

You have to get this turtleneck.”

Harmonically, Turtleneck” bears similarities to the best record from Sleep Well Beast, 🎵 “The System Only Dreams in Total Darkness”.  The assertiveness of the band, led by Berninger, stands out.   The guitar solo is sweet as well, in the most kick-ass way possible that is!

5. Khia, “My Neck, My Back (Lick It)”

💿 Thug Misses • 🏷 Essential Media Group • 🗓 2002

Khia, Thug Misses [📷: Essential Media Group]“All you ladies pop your pussy like this / Shake your body: don’t stop, don’t miss.” Yep, that how 🎵 “My Neck, My Back” commences.  Geeze Louise! 🎙 Khia is a one-hit-wonder whom we’ll never forget, thanks to this filthy record. The hook is simple, direct, and utterly shocking: “My neck, my back / Lick my pussy and my crack.” Gah-day-um!

In the verses, Khia takes the time to educate her man on how she likes to be pleasured.  She doesn’t refrain or go off-topic.

“First you gotta put your neck into it

Don’t stop, just do it

Then you roll your tongue

From the crack back to the front

Then you suck it all ‘til I shake and cum, nigga

Make sure I keep busting nuts, nigga

All over your face and stuff…”

OMG 😬! There’s more, but you can listen to this ridiculous filthy on your own.  Yeah, you want to listen to it on your own…at home… not work.
