On The Musical Hype, we keep it progressive (just in case you hadn’t noticed).  We love to celebrate people of all different walks of life, ethnicity, gender, religion, sexuality, and otherwise and definitely ARE NOT about hatefulness, injustice, or racism.  One particular area of emphasis, since the inception of the site in 2016, has been highlighting the LGBTQ+ community 🏳️‍🌈.  Often, this is a community that offers plenty of intriguing music yet doesn’t always get its just due.  Furthermore, so many of the songs from these incredibly talented artists are quite personal, relatable (regardless of gender or sexual orientation), have a message that can be educational, enlightening, and/or teachable, and worthy of wider recognition.  The point is, we’ve tried to feature these musicians as well as compile compendiums with some highlights.  Once again, that is our goal with the 30-song list at hand, 🎧 A Must-Hear PRIDE 🏳️‍🌈 Compendium: 2021.

Obviously, 🎧 A Must-Hear PRIDE 🏳️‍🌈 Compendium: 2021 only scratches the surface.  Yes, we highlighted some, but there are so many others who didn’t get their shine on here – we suck! Still, this list features both better known LGBTQ+ artists/allies as well as some artists who deserve more attention.  Often, we’ve simply expanded lists, much like 2020’s 🎧 A Compendium Comprised of 100 Notable LGBTQ+ Songs 🏳️‍🌈.  On A Must-Hear PRIDE 🏳️‍🌈 Compendium: 2021, with an exception, we mostly focus on songs that weren’t previously compiled on the ‘big list.’ Our newest list features 🎙 Arca, 🎙 Asbjørn, 🎙 girl in red, 🎙 KAYTRANADA, 🎙 Lil Nas X, 🎙 Rina Sawayama, and 🎙 Years & Years among others. So, without further ado, whether you are reading and listening to this during PRIDE month or otherwise, I hope you find a new bop or two to add to your listening rotation from A Must-Hear PRIDE 🏳️‍🌈 Compendium: 2021!

1. Lil Nas X, “MONTERO (Call Me by Your Name)”

🎵 “MONTERO (Call Me by Your Name)” • 🏷 Columbia • 📅 2021

“I’m not fazed, only here to sin / If Eve ain’t in your garden, you know that you can…” Woo!  🏆 Grammy-winning, genre bender 🎙 Lil Nas X returned with a hot, controversial new single, 🎵 “MONTERO (Call Me by Your Name)”. Nas X, who came out as gay 🏳️‍🌈 when acquiring his success with 🎵 “Old Town Road” has embraced his sexuality and identity – AWESOME!  On “MONTERO,” he reflects on his own experiences with his sexuality – he is Montero Lamar Hill, after all.  Fueling the fire musically is sleek production courtesy of 🎛 Roy Lenzo, 🎛 Omer Fedi, and 🎛 Take A Daytrip.  That said, it’s the lyrics and narrative that make “MONTERO (Call Me by Your Name)” truly special. The eyebrow raising music video is something in its own right, making conservatives totally lose their 💩.

Lil Nas X keeps things short but totally sweet on “MONTERO (Call Me by Your Name).” The sweet part are the many experiences he references associated with many gay men at some point or other. On numerous occasions, he expresses desires including “I wanna feel on your ass in Hawaii / I want that jet lag from fuckin’ and flyin’ / Shoot a child in your mouth while I’m ridin’” and arguably, more intriguingly, “Never want the niggas that’s in my league / I wanna fuck the ones I envy, I envy.” The latter lyric from the second verse is ear-catching because of the layers – crushing on someone more fit, handsome as well as potentially someone who is heterosexual as opposed to homosexual. The other notable thing expressed by Nas X is the plight of being a gay (LGBTQIA+ 🏳️‍🌈) individual whether it’s being trapped in the closet, religious tension, or any number of factors. Lots to unpack on this bop, and everyone should take the time to do so regardless of your sexuality.

2. KAYTRANADA, “What You Need”

Ft. Charlotte Day Wilson

💿 BUBBA • 🏷 RCA • 📅 2019

In 2019, 🏆 Grammy-winning producer 🎙 KAYTRANADA (Louis Kevin Celestin) released his sophomore album, 💿 BUBBA.  Backtracking a bit, if you are unfamiliar with KAYTRANADA, Andy Kellman (AllMusic) provides some biographical info: “Known for J Dilla-inspired beats and woozy house grooves, a Montreal-based producer whose full-length debut won the 2016 Polaris Music Prize.”  Also, worth noting, Celestin is gay, something he discussed in a 2016 Fader article penned by Alex Frank.  On the ‘what’ song that hails from BUBBA, 🎵 “What You Need,” Celestin enlists the services of a fellow Canadian, 🎙 Charlotte Day Wilson, on vocals. Also, worth mentioning, Wilson is also a member of the LGBTQ+ community 🏳️‍🌈.

“I never wanted you
To see this part of meNow all I can hope to do
Is tell you still
That it’s what you need...”

“What You Need” appears on the second half of BUBBA, specifically the tenth track.  The production is a glorious mixture of groovy, sensual, and smoothness.  The synths that KAYTRANADA uses are marvelous, characterized by balance, decadence, and potency. The beat = stellar, stellar, STELLAR!  Add Celestin’s instrumental with those cool, smoky vocals of Charlotte Day Wilson, and the vibe is nothing short of killer.  The result is a great blend of dance, electronic, and R&B.

3. Asbjørn, “Young Dumb Crazy”

💿 BOYOLOGY • 🏷 Embassy of Music GmbH • 📅 2021

🎙 Asbjørn (Asbjørn Toftdahl Terkelsen) is a talented, 28-year-old pop musician from Denmark. The Danish artist proves he’s no slouch, shining on 🎵 “Young Dumb Crazy”, the promo single from his upcoming third studio album, 💿 BOYOLOGY.  On “Young Dumb Crazy,” which Terkelsen wrote himself, he speaks from the perspective of an ex-boyfriend, but also, reflects on his own poor decisions within a relationship. “I put all the things into the song that I wished he would have said to me,” he says, later adding, “As I wrote the song, I realised the double-perspective, the irony and my own hypocrisy.” “Young Dumb Crazy,” as you might suspect, is a must-hear.

There’s plenty to heart about “Young Dumb Crazy,” period. Produced by Asbjørn and 🎛 Tom Stafford, the backdrop is warm, never crowding the vocalist.  More impressive are the lovely, cutting vocals by Terkelsen.  I love his tone, as well as the vocal production itself.  He delivers an authentic, expressive, and truly nuanced vocal performance.  Adding to the awesomeness is the sheer honesty of the lyrics and the personal tilt, as previously mentioned.  The crème de la crème is definitely the catchy, memorably penned chorus.  Somewhere around the 2:17 mark, “Young Dumb Crazy” picks up intensity with some distinct vocal effects and colorful production touches. It’s a contrast to both what precedes and proceeds. All in all, he delivers the goods on “Young Dumb Crazy” singing fantastically, writing great, personal, and reflective lyrics, and constructing a solid backdrop. Terkelsen adds another gem to the LGBTQ+ catalog and the pop catalog.

4. Arca, “Nonbinary”

💿 KiCk i • 🏷 XL Recordings Ltd • 📅 2020

“I do what I wanna do when I wanna do it,” 🎙 Arca (Alejandra Ghersi) asserts on 🎵 “Nonbinary.” “Nonbinary” serves as the brief, experimental opener from the Venezuelan producer’s 2020 album, 💿 KiCk i.  As to be expected, she writes and produces the record herself.  Furthermore, thematically, she speaks about being nonbinary.  Echoing the aforementioned opening lyric, Ghersi later states, “I don’t give a fuck what you think.” Woo!

One of the big takeaways from “Nonbinary” musically speaking is the rhythmic aspect of the track.  Here, Arca raps aggressively over the ear-catching, minimalist backdrop. Eventually, the record expands in rhythmic scope and sound, becoming more dynamic. Ultimately, this is a colorful cut that’s a great addition to any LGBTQIA-related list, or any playlist comprised of truly unique, ear-catching music in general.

“I can be friendly or I can be fake
I can be real or I can lick a taste
What’s it gonna take?
I can be sexy or I could be sad
Act bad just to be sweet
What a treat
It is to be
Nonbinary...”

5. girl in red, “two queens in a king sized bed”

🎵 “two queens in a king sized bed” • 🏷 world in red / AWAL • 📅 2020

“Two queens in a king-sized bed / There’s no mistletoe above our heads.” So, would it be safe to call 🎵 “two queens in a king sized bed” a queer/lesbian 🏳️‍🌈 Christmas 🎄 song?  Yep, for sure.  Pretty rad 🎙 Marie Ulven, better known as 🎙 girl in red.

Initially, the record features piano-driven production (girl in red and 🎛 Matias Tellez), before the addition of more sounds. Still, many of the sounds incorporated end up being keyboard-based.  The Norwegian singer delivers chill vocals, exhibiting a beautiful tone.  Furthermore, besides her radiant, passionate performance, I adore the vocal production.  Further confirming the ‘bop status’ of “two queens” is the passionate, catchy songwriting, particularly on the centerpiece, the chorus:

“I don’t have a lot to give
But I would give you everything
All my time is yours to spend
Let me wrap you in with my skin
With my skin.”

6. serpentwithfeet, “Same Size Shoe”

💿 DEACON • 🏷 Secretly Canadian • 📅 2021

“Can’t love no man ‘til I measured his feet,” alternative R&B artist 🎙 serpentwithfeet (Josiah Wise) asserts on 🎵 “Same Size Shoe”. “Same Size Shoe” is arguably the best song from his sophomore album, 💿 DEACON.  Later, Wise heeds the advice of his aunt singing, “My auntie’s right, don’t fuck a man / If his shoes are two times the size of your hands.” Woo!

Besides the unique lyricism of the record, serpentwithfeet delivers an expressive, nuanced, and truly refined vocal performance. His best moments include the ad-libs, the bridge where he asks for his trumpet (you just have to hear it for yourself), and of course, the chorus.  The chorus, as to expected, is infectious to the nth degree: “Me and my boo wear the same size shoe.” Additionally, the production (Wise, 🎛 Brandon Juhans, and 🎛 Batu) allures as well.

7. Greyson Chance, “Hellboy”

💿 Trophies • 🏷 GCM / Arista • 📅 2021

“Velvet on the floor / Writings on the wall / Let me come a little closer, get you elevated.” Ooh la la! From the onset of 🎵 “Hellboy”, 🎙 Greyson Chance delivers sexy vibes, period.  The hellish single ultimately appears as the seventh track on Chance’s album, 💿 Trophies, released in late June 2021).

“Hellboy” was written by Chance alongside 🎼✍ Mike Robinson and 🎼✍ Seth Ennis.  It is a suggestive record without being truly explicit – you could say that it doesn’t cross the line.  Robinson, in addition to writing, also serves as the producer on this sleek, sexy joint. The chorus is sure to get you hot and bothered:

“Ooh, there’s a fire burning
Baby do you feel it?
Don’t you let it go, let it go out
Ooh, burning a simple blue
It's like a forbidden fruit
And I want it so, want it so.”

Furthermore, the post-chorus continues the irresistible, truly stimulating experience.  Understandably, Greyson Chance is indeed a ‘hell boy.’

“Hands tied, bite your lip
Green light, flip and twist
Dark magic, red boot kick
I’m a hell boy, I’m a hell boy
Your eyes on my hips
Damn right, you want this
All night, yeah, I might give you hell, boy
I’m a hell boy.”

8. Rina Sawayama, “Chosen Family”

💿 SAWAYAMA • 🏷 Dirty Hit • 📅 2020

“We don’t need to be related to relate / We don’t need to share genes or a surname / You are, you are / My chosen, chosen family.” Gorgeous, meaningful lyrics, 🎙 Rina Sawayama! The awesome 🎵 “Chosen Family” hails from her 2020 full-length debut, 💿 SAWAYAMA. Rina, a member of the LGBTQ+ community 🏳️‍🌈, is thankful for her community – her ‘chosen Family’ – on this standout.  Sawayama serves up lovely, expressive, and nuanced vocals; you sense her authenticity and sincerity.  Furthermore, the production is gorgeous. The sound is balanced yet quite colorful and ear catching.  The best moment is undoubtedly the catchy chorus, the centerpiece of this standout record. You don’t have to be queer to relate to “Chosen Family”; the messaging is applicable to any number of situations.

“...So, what if we don’t look the same?
We been going through the same thing, yeah
You are, you are
My chosen, chosen family.”

9. Ekelle, “I Need That”

🎵 “I Need That” • 🏷 Motive Music Canada • 🗓 2021

According to versatile artist 🎙Ekelle, 🎵 “I Need That”, the song at hand, “was written as a reminder that you’re that bitch, no matter what.” Right on! Anyways, the confident, electrifying Canadian rapper, singer, and songwriter definitely brings mad attitude, mad energy, and ample heat to the sleek single at hand.  Can we go on and characterize “I Need That” as #SLAY???

“No more lockdown make it hot now / Better do the damn thing when I drop now.” Woo! From the start of “I Need That,” it’s S-I-C-K-E-N-I-N-G! As Ekelle says regarding the conception of the record, “We’re all going a little stir-crazy now a year into the pandemic, but this is a track to help pull you out of a rut if you’re not feeling so sexy.” True to her word, she brings a heaping dose of sexiness (and sex itself).

“Give her what she really want
Cumming in her nightgown
Harden when I hit the shot
Never seen a rebound.”

The clever, sensual lyrics don’t stop there whether its “Wrestling around till we’re soaking wet / Let’s have a night that you won’t forget” (Ooh-la-la) or “Fuck what they all say hot like I’m flambé.” Throw in a catchy, infectious chorus and fine production work, and ladies and gentlemen, we have a certified B-O-P! THIS RIGHT HERE, is a necessity!

10. Myylo, “Savage Bop”

💿 My EP Era is Over Now • 🏷 Myylo • 📅 2021

“This is a savage bop / I pray to fenty gods / Yeah, I’m as apathetic as a valley goth.” Say what? On 🎵 “Savage Bop” (💿 My EP Era is Over Now) a standout from ‘the gift that keeps on giving’ named 🎙 Myylo (Michael Myylo Lewis), he co-writes with 🎼✍ Anna Dellaria and 🎼✍ Zack Djurich. As the excerpted lyrics suggest, this record is as colorful as its title.  Our beloved artist mostly raps, bringing an agile flow and rhymes that are entertaining AF.  Of course, as to be expected, Lewis speaks about his preferred topic of choice – BOYS.

“I’m like a wildfire burning boys hearts,” Myylo spits at one point, later captivating with the likes of, “Hokus Pokus witch bitch, I cackle in the dark.” Wow! Of course, he rightfully throws a heartthrob into the mix: “Timmy Chalamet, hit me up to eat his plum / Rum bum, bum, bum, he like how I roll my tongue.” Yeah, he’s exaggerating (I think), but who can blame him for loving some Timothée Chalamet? Worth noting, there’s some singing on “Savage Bop” even if it’s limited, plus, the production is idiomatic of hip-hop-infused pop.  Ultimately, on “Savage Bop,” Lewis oozes with personality and his songwriting style is incredibly entertaining.

11. Claud, “Wish You Were Gay”

🎵 “Wish You Were Gay” • 🏷 Claud • 📅 2019

Sometimes, when a high profile, major label artist releases a song, you assume every song by other artists that follows it is a cover.  🎙 Claud (Claudia Mintz) released their single, 🎵 “Wish You Were Gay” after 🎙 Billie Eilish released her own 🎵 “Wish You Were Gay” from her Grammy-winning album, 💿 When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?.  Clearly, these are two different songs from two very different artists, even if they share the same title.  Eilish’s own record appears later on this gay-themed list but we’ll show love to Claud’s intriguing record here.

Claud tackles a prevalent issue in the LGBTQ+ community – falling in love with someone who is not gay.  Here, Claud longs for her love but knows that it’s a long shot.  “Hoping that I’m a better replacement / For the guys that you’re always out chasing,” they sing on the first verse, continuing, “Or should I accept things I can’t change? / Hate it that I wish you were [gay].” The chorus of this awesome 🎼✍ Mintz and 🎼✍ Doug Schadt penned track sums things up perfectly:

“I wish you were gay so you could just hold me
Call me your babe instead of your homie
Don’t know what to say
But I wish you were gay
I wish you were gay so it would be easy
For me to say that I’m catching feelings
And I know you’re straight
But I wish you were gay.”

12. Shivum Sharma, “Diamond”

🎵 Diamond • 🏷 Shivum Sharma • 📅 2020

“When you see the ground again / My Diamond in the sky,” 🎙 Shivum Sharma sings radiantly on 🎵 “Diamond,” a must-hear, 2020 single from the southeast London artist.  He continues, “Well, will you be found again / Blessed is your goodbye.” Oh, the poetry of the chorus, and that’s a mere excerpt! Of “Diamond,” Sharma tells Daniel Megarry of Gay Times, “Diamond is a tribute to the soft golden 70s soul I’ve grown up with.”

“Diamond” was written and produced by Sharma and 🎼✍ 🎛 Alex Burey.  The backdrop is dreamy and lush, a perfect match for Sharma’s expressive, nuanced voice.  The effect is one that’s soulful, yet in a sweet, ‘crooner’ sort of way.  Sharma sounds particularly potent in his upper register – stunning (and sexy) to say the least.  In addition to the aforementioned excerpts from the chorus, the second verse is pretty sweet:

“He said, ‘Boy, you see my videos?’
‘Or we can leave our feelings at the door’
So, taken at the given cost
He gives me everything I need and more.”

In his feature in Gay Times, Sharma adds, “Although it’s a sad song, it carries a lot of sun with it.” Indeed Shivum – it’s definitely a diamond!

13. Keiynan Lonsdale, “Gay Street Fighter”

💿 Rainbow Boy • 🏷 Keiynan Lonsdale • 📅 2020

🎵 “Gay Street Fighter” appears as the second track on 💿 Rainbow Boy, the debut album by actor and musician 🎙 Keiynan Lonsdale.  Lonsdale is best known for his acting roles on the CW TV series The Flash, and the films Insurgent and Love, Simon.  As you might expect, with a song named “Gay Street Fighter,” Lonsdale isn’t merely playing a role; he identifies himself as queer.

“Gay Street Fighter” is quite ear catching to say the least with biting brass, infectious groove, and most importantly, the unapologetically G-A-Y lyrics from Lonsdale (“I’ll preach it louder for the back / The truth is (Everybody) / Everybody’s just a little bit gay”). Indeed, on this co-write/co-production with 🎼✍ 🎛 Tyler Minford he crafts a record where he doesn’t give a fizzuck (😂) what the haters say.  The chorus makes it crystal clear that the haters can kiss his a$$.

“I’m tryna love ya but you’re makin’ this shit so hard
Stay tryna help you clean yo mess cause you done fuck it up
And even though you might not thank me for your happy life
Just know it’s gay that makes the world so goddamn bright.”

“Gay Street Fighter” is a big FU to homophobia.

“If you told me that we’d died / And gone to the gay bar / I woulda said, ‘That seems right.’” 🎙 Rosie Tucker provides a more vivid portrait on their own 🎵 “Gay Bar.” “Gay Bar” arrives as the opener on Tucker’s 2019 sophomore album, 💿 Never Not Never Not Never Not.  “Gay Bar” definitely commences Never Not Never Not Never Not with a certified BANG!

According to Stereogum, who premiered the single, Tucker states “‘Gay Bar’ celebrates the incredible spectrum of characters dressed to impress at your average regional queer watering hole.” Definitely sounds accurate judging the characterizations established lyrically.  There are a number of memorable lines such as personal favorites “Saint Peter clad in leather / She was looking quite salacious” and, of course, “Cowboys dipped in glitter.” Clearly, Tucker paints a picture where she’s in heaven – gay bar heaven!

15. Perfume Genius, “Jason”

💿 Set My Heart Immediately on Fire • 🏷 Matador • 🗓 2020

“Jason undressed me / Lying on his sheets / He did not do the same / Even his boots were on…” “Jason,” a highlight from the superb, 2020 🎙 Perfume Genius (Mike Hadreas) album, 💿 Set My Heart on Fire Immediately, explores sexuality. “Jason” details a one-night stand when Hadreas was 23.

The ‘hook-up’ occurred with a straight guy (perhaps ‘questioning’) and apparently, involves some nurturing from Mike.  “He was afraid / Tears streaming down his face,” he sings on the second verse, adding on the third, “I was proud to seem / Warm and mothering / Just for a night.” Musically, the biggest triumph on “Jason” is Hadreas’ falsetto – simply amazing.  From a sexual perspective, it’s awesome to hear a scenario where a man still seems to be in the infancy stages of accepting and understanding his sexuality.

16. Troye Sivan, “Rager teenager!”

💿 In a Dream (EP) • 🏷 Capitol • 🗓 2020

🎵 “Rager teenager!” is arguably the crowning achievement from 💿 In a Dream (EP), the 2020 EP by South African/Australian pop sensation 🎙 Troye Sivan. 🎛️ OZGO (Oscar Görres) spoils us with his production skills with lovely warm pads, big, pummeling drums, and a great harmonic progression. Troye’s sound is ‘liberated’ throughout, particularly the pre-chorus and chorus. His vocals are top-notch, sounding incredibly masculine, expressive, and sexy simultaneously.

Examining key sections, the pre-chorus might be the best.  It’s more dynamic than the chorus, and establishes the ‘liberated’ sound:

“I just wanna go wild
I just wanna fuck shit up and just ride
In your car tonight
In your bed tonight
I just wanna sing loud
I just wanna lose myself in a crowd
In your arms tonight
Or in his arms tonight.”

The pre-chorus is varied each time, keeping things fresh and providing variance. The chorus remains the same each time with no variation. Calmer, it’s potent as well: “Hey, my lil’ rager teenager / Tryna figure it out…”. Besides those two sections, the instrumental outro is a nice touch. Great singing, great writing, and great production makes “rager teenager!” a gem.  The swear words also give it a little more pizzazz!

17. Ben Platt, “Imagine”

🎵 “Imagine” • 🏷 Atlantic • 📅 2021

Not enough folks partook of 💿 Sing to Me Instead, the 2019 debut album by 🎙 Ben Platt. Of course, Platt had plenty of other success, including starring on 📺 The Politician on Netflix.  For his sophomore album, however, the former 🎭 Dear Evan Hansen star opts for a poppier sound, evidenced by single, 🎵 “Imagine”.

The key to any song that features Ben Platt in the leading role is that he’s able to show how gifted he is as a vocalist.  Even with more modern sheen on the production end of things, “Imagine” allows Platt to bless us with his prodigious pipes.  He has a marvelous tone, great range, and exhibits ample personality.  At first, I was slightly off put by the production and sound, but as “Imagine” progresses, the pacing makes more sense, and Ben shows more passion, and assertiveness. Never in doubt is the songwriting, which is very personal for Platt and quite relatable.  Love is the theme – ever relatable.  Some of the best lyrics occur on the pre-chorus and chorus.  On the pre-chorus, Ben speaks of his partner, singing, “You say I’m your hero / But you are the one that saved me.” Love it! Of course, the centerpiece, where Platt is really able to flex, is the chorus:

“I can’t imagine my life without you
I can’t imagine one night without you
If something happened, don’t know what I’d do
I can’t imagine
I can’t imagine, my life without you.”

Ultimately, “Imagine” feels good, and, as always, Platt sings marvelously with a great topic/theme to work.

20-year-old British singer/songwriter 🎙 Arlo Parks has plenty to offer. She’s part of the ever-expanding LGBTQ+ musicians 🏳️‍🌈 delivering some truly fresh, compelling music.  If you’re in need for a starting point for Parks, look no further than her latest bop, 🎵 “Caroline”, set to appear on her 2021 debut album, 💿 Collapsed in Sunbeams.

“I was waiting for the bus one day / Watched a fight between an artsy couple escalate,” Arlo Parks sings on the first verse, continuing, “Strawberry cheeks flushed with defeated rage / Then he spilled his coffee as he frantically explained.” Clearly, the poetic nature of Parks is front and center from the start of “Caroline.”  This narrative-driven songwriting is one of the biggest selling points. Written with 🎼 ✍ Gianluca Buccellati, Buccellati also produces 🎛️.  Musically, “Caroline” is a straight-up vibe.  The backdrop is simultaneously chill and soulful.  The same can be said of Parks, who sings with incredible ease, yet manages to pack a punch.  Her voice just sort of floats – definitely a desirable quality. All in all, “Caroline” is a triumph where the songwriting, narrativizes “seeing situations unfold without context,” and the music, melody, and vocal performance are all elite.  Throw in a memorable chorus and “Caroline” is indeed a surefire hit.

Apollo’s style is quite eclectic (R&B, pop, rock, Latin), best characterized under the alternative umbrella. Like the song “I’m Amazing” that commences Apolonio, “Bi Fren” drips in swagger.  Also, obviously, it raises speculation regarding the musician’s sexuality, which he doesn’t really address (nor does he have to). That said, there’s clearly some connection that Omar had with this guy, mumble approach to performing or not.

On the second verse, Omar asserts:

“I still like him, I still like him
I used to drive around your block without no license
Separate you and your bitch, I’m not no hyphen
I hate your bitch, so I dipped out and jumped the high fence
He talking ‘bout hi friend, I’m talkin’ bout bi friend.”

It’s definitely intriguing – incredibly entertaining. That groove is 🔥.

20. YUNGBLUD, “mars”

💿 weird! • 🏷 Locomotion Recordings / Interscope • 📅 2020

Alternative musician 🎙 YUNGBLUD (Dominic Harrison) is ‘one of a kind’ – understatement.  What’s really cool about him is his absolute fearlessness.  Musically, he’s quite aggressive, bringing ample punch.  As a person, he’s unafraid to push the envelope, constantly challenging conformity.  🎵 “Mars” appears as a highlight from his sophomore album, 💿 weird!. “Mars” was written by YUNGBLUD and 🎙 Matt Schwartz, while it’s produced by a team comprised of 🎼 ✍ Mike Crossey, 🎼 ✍ Chris Greatti, 🎼 ✍ Zakk Cervini, and 🎼 ✍ Omer Fedi.  The songwriting is notable, as Harrison imparts the tale of a transgender girl looking for acceptance, particularly from her parents.

Harrison highlights her struggles throughout the song.  On the first verse, he asserts, “But she can’t be herself when she’s somebody else.”  On the second, he sings, “Yeah, her Mum and Dad, they couldn’t understand / Why she couldn’t turn it off, become a better man.” He goes on to sing on the chorus her desires to “go to California / There everyone would adore her,” given the progressiveness of the state.  The chorus, is simple but nothing short of awesome as he asks, “Is there any life on Mars?” The first thing that comes to mind given the title, chorus lyrics, and the bombastic nature of this song? David Bowie, of course, which is clearly intentional. YUNGBLUD’s progressive spirit shines bright on “Mars.” The beautiful message of the song is nothing short of awesome.  All boxes are checked off: production, songwriting, and vocals.

21. Jónsi & Robyn, “Salt Licorice”

💿 Shiver • 🏷 KRUNK • 📅 2020

“Kiss my soul, oh, my salty licorice / You taste like frost and burnish leather / Ooh, my Scandinavian pain.” Yaaassss! 🎵 “Salt Licorice” appears as the seventh track on 💿 Shiver, the 2020 solo album by 🎙 Jónsi. The openly gay Icelandic musician may be best known as a member of 🎙 Sigur Rós. Also, he’s renowned for his bowed guitar playing and his unique countertenor voice. Focusing on the song at hand, “Salt Licorice,” Jónsi collaborates with Swedish standout, 🎙 Robyn. The results are pretty sweet – not salty!

If you find yourself in need of an incredibly fun, sexy, and unique, electronic pop bop, look no further “Salt Licorice.” The production is definitely colorful, courtesy of Jónsi and 🎛 A. G. Cook – gotta love the aggressive sound.  Furthermore, the lyrics aren’t deep, but incredibly fun, including the memorable chorus where both artists sing together (“Why can’t you just be led astray? / ‘Cause you’re a heartbreaker”).  Allow your feet to take over and prepare to dance your @$$ off to this one.

22. Victoria Monét, “Touch Me”

💿 JAGUAR • 🏷 Tribe • 📅 2020

“Went from hands on the wheel to hands on my thigh / To hands on my body in the back of the Porsche / I’m in love with your fingertips / I reminisce places you kiss / Girl, it’s been too long.” 🎵 “Touch Me” appears as the ninth track on 💿 JAGUAR, the debut studio album by R&B singer/songwriter, 🎙 Victoria Monét.  Monét delivers cool, calm, collected, and incredibly smooth vocals throughout the three-minute-plus joint. Furthermore, she sounds incredibly sexy in the process.  Add in ‘girl’ in the mix, and “Touch Me” becomes a stellar addition to LGBTQ+ 🏳️‍🌈 collection of songs.

Additionally, Victoria pens a set of sexy lyrics alongside 🎼 ✍ Dernst “D’Mile” Emile II and 🎼 ✍ B. Edmonds – great songwriting team to say the list.  Amplifying the closing cut from JAGUAR even more is slick, balanced production from D’Mile. The sound is modern yet soulful, and highly effective when it’s all said and done.  You’ll definitely be touched (and perhaps wanna be touched) after indulging into the gem that is “Touch” from this talented R&B singer/songwriter.

23. Isaac Dunbar, “comme des garçons (like the boys)”

💿 Isaac’s Insects [EP] • 🏷 RCA 🗓 2020

🎵 “comme des garçons (like the boys)” arrived as the fourth advance single from 💿 Isaac’s Insects, the 2020 EP by teen alternative musician, 🎙 Isaac Dunbar.  There are a number of aspects of “comme des garçons (like the boys)” that makes it stand out – beyond the French title of course!

The production is definitely a selling point. The synths are colorful, filled with exuberance, making “comme des garçons” sleek AF. It’s also a winner thanks to Dunbar’s amazing voice and perhaps more strikingly, the lyrics. “Comme des garçons (like the boys)” is personal and thoughtful, finding Dunbar reflecting on identity issues while fiercely embracing nonconformity on the chorus:

“I don’t wanna be the same
I don’t wanna be like you
I don’t wanna be comme des garçons...”

Also, worth noting, the fantastic 🎙 Rina Sawayama has her own fabulous “Comme Des Garçons (Like the Boys)” – totally separate from Isaac’s by the way!

24. Davis Mallory, “Shirtless”

🎵 “Shirtless” • 🏷 Lionboy • 📅 2019

“So, like a tall glass of water / Got me thirsty / Can’t take my eyes off of ya / when you’re shirtless, when you’re shirtless…” As the saying goes, “If you got it, flaunt it.” No, I’m not a fan of cocky guys, let alone those godawful, hedonistic, fuckboys. That said, like 🎙 Davis Mallory on 🎵 “Shirtless,” I can appreciate legitimate eye candy that’s being served up.  In this case, that eye candy is quite decadent from Mallory’s perspective.  He appreciates the confidence of the hotties, definitely the view, and how that view makes him feel, if you catch my drift.  A proud member of the LGBTQ+ community 🏳️‍🌈, let me remind you that the singer, songwriter, and DJ previously appeared on 📺 The Real World: Denver and The Challenge.

As expected, “Shirtless” features slick production work, courtesy of 🎛 Joakim Buddee, who writes alongside Mallory.  The sound of the record is fittingly bright, energetic, and enthusiastic. Regardless of sexual preference, think about how you feel when you see someone who’s fine as hell… That’s what “Shirtless” encapsulates.  The lyrics are ‘over the top’ and dramatic, yet, when you think about it, we’re all ‘over the top,’ dramatic, and extra when it comes to crushes, fantasies, and such.  Sure, it’s not the most poetic record, but there are some memorable moments lyrically including “All of your muscles and your veins / Oh, they’re driving me insane / Raise my hands and singing praise / Thanking God for what he made / And the sun’s out / And your guns out.” Jesus!

25. St. Vincent, “Pay Your Way in Pain”

💿 Daddy’s Home • 🏷 Loma Vista• 📅 2021

Annie Clark, aka 🏆 Grammy winning singer/songwriter 🎙 St. Vincent, drops her first new album of the 20s with 💿 Daddy’s Home.  Leading the charge is single and album opener 🎵 “Pay Your Way in Pain”.  As always, Clark never fails to disappoint. “Pay Your Way in Pain” was written by Clark and 🎼✍ Jack Antonoff.  Furthermore, both musicians produce the unique sounding record.

“Pay Your Way in Pain” commences with sort of this cabaret sound –throwback in quality. Soon enough, it transforms into this adventurous joint with a blend of funk and electronic cues.  This quirky number is definitely alternative through and through. If nothing else, St. Vincent delivers an ear catching record that doesn’t conform in any way, shape, or fashion.  I love the playful ways that she uses her voice here. The songwriting is also intriguing, telling a compelling story, characteristic of the artist’s music of the past. Specifically, the character seems to be facing plenty of pain as the adversity is through the roof from lack of money, being judged, becoming homeless – it’s a lot! “Pay Your Way in Pain” is quirky as albeit and we wouldn’t have it any other way.

26. The 1975, “Jesus Christ 2005 God Bless America”

💿 Notes on a Conditional Form • 🏷 Interscope • 🗓 2020

“I’m in love with Jesus Christ / He’s so nice.”  Honestly, a lot of people are 🎙 Matthew Healy, but we all know that you are an atheist/secular humanist, so… what gives?  Perhaps the front man of 🎙 The 1975 actually isn’t speaking about his religious beliefs as much as the character he portrays on 🎵 “Jesus Christ 2005 God Bless America” (💿 Notes on a Conditional Form). Featuring uncredited vocals by 🎙 Phoebe Bridgers, “Jesus Christ 2005 God Bless America” tackles faith and sexuality.

So, the opening lyric from “Jesus Christ 2005 God Bless American” comes off incredibly spiritual – quite Christian.  However, the issue comes into play on the second verse, with Bridgers assisting: “I’m in love with a boy I know / But that’s a feeling I can never show.”  Why can’t he show it? Well, there’s been plenty of friction between being homosexual and Christian. Often, Sodom and Gomorrah are cited in the purported sin.  Of course, the phrase “Adam and Eve, Not Adam and Steve” predates those ‘sinful’ happenings in Sodom and Gomorrah.  Back to the song though!

Bridgers has her own moment where sexuality comes to the forefront:

“I’m in love with the girl next door
Her name’s Claire
Nice when she comes ‘round to call
Then masturbate the second she’s not there.”

Wow.  Of course, because both Healy and Bridgers are Christian (in the context) of the song, ‘it’s all good’ – NOT. The chorus is clearly the centerpiece of this alternative, singer/songwriter record.

“Fortunately, I believe, lucky me
Searching for planes in the sea, and that’s irony
Soil just needs water to be, and a seed
So, if we can turn into a tree, can I be the leaves?”

Examine the song further, and there’s another Biblical allusion to Faith being like a mustard seed.  Here, you can argue that Healy desires faith that he doesn’t possess, while simultaneously, captures the plight of the gay Christian who is essentially a walking contradiction. The song has a lot to unpack, but it’s definitely a worthwhile listen that’s worth discussing.

27. Shamir, “On My Own”

💿 Shamir • 🏷 Shamir • 🗓 2020

“I used to think that love was fleeting / You’ll just end up hurt / But it’s a cosmic game of meetings / That may never work…” A prime example of a gem arriving in the turbulence that is 2020 is 🎵 “On My Own” (💿 Shamir) an intriguing, expressive rock record by Shamir Bailey, better known as 🎙 Shamir.  The nonbinary musician is definitely ‘one of a kind,’ with a truly distinct, powerful set of pipes.

Perhaps Shamir is markedly different from anyone that you know personally or have ever met, but the theme and lyrics of “On My Own” are quite relatable.  The theme is, the plight of love/ being alone.  Yep, that’s a theme that always works, and the expressive singer nails it.  Worth noting, when discussing the song, Shamir tells Rolling Stone about a new angle it takes, given the pandemic: “…Considering the pandemic, [“On My Own”] … morphed into an accidental quarantine anthem, especially for the people who live alone like me.”  The aforementioned lyrics kick off “On My Own,” following an energetic intro that sets the tone of the song.  From there, Bailey embraces being alone:

“I don’t mind to live all on my own
And I never did
And I don’t care to feel like I belong
But you always did.”

Independent, following a breakup, Shamir does reflect on the possibilities for love in the future, but he also understands he doesn’t need it, particularly if it isn’t worth it, ultimately.  Of course, he does so with a kick ass, rhythmic, guitar-heavy backdrop (🎛 Kyle Pulley does a superb with the production btw), and top-notch, upper-register pipes.

28. Adam Lambert, “Roses”

Ft. Nile Rodgers

💿 Velvet • 🏷 More is More • 📅 2020

On 🎵 “Roses”, a highlight from his electrifying, ‘funked-out,’ gem-of-a fourth studio album, 💿 Velvet, 🎙 Adam Lambert collaborates with musical royalty – 🎙 Nile Rodgers of 🎙 Chic notoriety.  The resulting 🎵 “Roses” is among the grooviest, most LIT records appearing on Velvet.  I love the restraint that Lambert shows on the verses and pre-chorus, bringing more punch on yet another spot-on chorus.

Lambert is a bit upset on “Roses” though.  Why? Well, he received ROSES but sans emotion – matters of the heart!

“And all that I got was roses
Don’t mean a thing without emotions
Baby, just do it right, focus
‘Cause I just needed your love tonight, tonight, tonight.”

Basically, Lambert wants more of an emotional connection, so much so that on the second verse he asks:

“Is it love or are we just fuckin’?
Tell me, baby, you can’t keep me waiting.”

29. Years & Years, “Starstruck”

🎵 “Starstruck” • 🏷 Polydor • 📅 2021

Once a three-person collective, 🎙 Years & Years vis now a solo act by front man 🎙 Olly Alexander. Despite the changes, Olly has totally got us 🎵 “Starstruck” with his new single. “Starstruck” was written by Alexander alongside 🎼✍ Clarence Coffee Jr., 🎼✍ Mark Ralph, and 🎼✍ Nathaniel Ledwidge.  Ralph and Ledwidge produce this bright sounding, energetic pop cut. With a great backdrop behind him, Olly delivers assertive vocals that are colorful, nuanced, and filled with personality.  His tone is absolutely stunning.

In addition to his singing, Olly ‘puts in some work’ with his pen, delivering some fun lyrics (“If I could bottle you up / I would sip ya like cosmic juice”). Of course, the centerpiece is none other than the chorus which is hella catchy.  Furthermore, the brightness ascends to an even higher level.

“I can’t help it
I get starstruck around you
What can I do baby?”

Quite a relatable sentiment by all means.  In addition to the love-centric lyrics, “Starstruck” is well organized in regard to form.  Years & Years keeps it standard with verse, pre-chorus, chorus, and later, a breakdown section, which serves as a bridge essentially (“Starstruck / Not giving you up”). Down two members? No problem for Years & Years, who continues to bring the heat on “Starstruck.” All boxes are checked off:  strong vocals, catchy songwriting, and ear catching production.

30. Kesha, “BFF”

Ft. Wrabel

💿 High Road • 🏷 Kemosabe • 🗓 2020

🏆 Grammy-nominated pop artist 🎙 Kesha brought ample spirit, energy (and f-bombs as well) on her colorful fourth studio album, 💿 High Road. One of my personal favorites from High Road is 🎵 “BFF” featuring 🎙 Wrabel.  Worth noting, Kesha identifies as bi, while Wrabel identifies as gay.  This dynamic plays a role in this particular song…

“BFF” may not eclipse the most elite numbers from High Road, but the concept is more of a rarity than commonplace, musically speaking.  On this 🎙 Stuart Crichton production, Kesha sings about her best friend, who happens to be gay (see the connection).

“I’m callin’ up my best friend, can we just hang out tonight?
Neither of our boyfriends are even invited
When I’m with my best friend, I feel like myself again
Always make me laugh until I’m cryin’.”

Both artists reminisce about their many times together as friends, exhibiting their support and dedication for one another.  That dedication includes one of the most memorable lyrics, courtesy of Wrabel:

“I knew you were nervous, and I thought it’d make you laugh
So, I sent you a bag of candy dicks.”

Now that’s #Friendship + a pretty sweet LGBTQ+ bop.
