Theme & Lyrics

Bitmoji Image“I have forgiven Jesus / For all the desire / He placed in me when there’s nothing I can do / With this desire.”  Amen??? Clearly, 🎙 Morrissey delivers a different kind of sermon on 🎵 “I Have Forgiven Jesus” (💿 You Are the Quarry, 2004). Something tells me that those who are devout in their beliefs likely have a ‘bone to pick’ with the English musician. I mean, c’mon, you know it’s totally Outlandish to exhibit any skepticism toward ‘The Most High’ and NOT exhibit faith the size of a grain of mustard seed.  Honestly, anytime there’s religious skepticism, it’s a perfect fit for Outlandish Rock 🎸🤘.

unimpressed gorillaSo, where is Morrissey coming from? According to him, he “was a good kid / I wouldn’t do you no harm.” Fair enough, but by the end of both verses, he asserts, “But Jesus hurt me / When he deserted me.” Lapsed Catholic indeed! For clarification, Morrissey is upset about being unable to fulfill his desires, including that universal four-letter word, love. God has given him this yet, he’s forgiving him “When there’s no one I can turn to with this love.”  So, is he totally agnostic or atheistic in his thinking? Well, the Christian answer would be yes but, honestly, the rock star is ‘keeping it 100.’ He doesn’t stop there, either!

“Monday – humiliation

Tuesday – suffocation

Wednesday – condescension

Thursday – is pathetic

By Friday life has killed me.”

Seems like a mighty, mighty example of trials and tribulation to me!

Final Thoughts 💭

Bitmoji ImageIt seems as if Morrissey wants Jesus to have mercy on him… maybe.  In all honesty, we are well aware that his religious beliefs aren’t the same as they once were.  There have been bolder, more outlandish repudiations of faith, but 🎵 “I Have Forgiven Jesus” is a strong affirmation questioning faith.  “And why did you stick me in / Self-deprecating bones and skin,” he sings towards the end, questioning, “Jesus – / Do you hate me?” Outlandish Rock 🎸🤘 exemplified!
