Vancouver singer Mathew V impresses on his fun, sassy, tongue in cheek, throwback, original jazz single, “My Boy.”
Jazz is NOT boring, PERIOD. Mathew V (Mathew Van Vooght) confirms this on his playful, sassy, tongue in cheek jazzy single,
“My Boy”. “My Boy” graces Van Vooght’s 2023 jazz LP,
Anything Goes (arrives April 14, 2023). Notably, the talented, openly gay artist has appeared on The Musical Hype in the past –
“Dancing in the Sky” (2022) and
“Catching Feelings” (2019). However, this is the first time Mr. V has been highlighted embracing vintage music of the past. The thing is, “My Boy” is not old. Sure, this original penned and produced by Van Vooght and
Ben Dunnill channels the past – a Marilyn Monroe-inspired record – it sounds quite refreshing in 2023.
First and foremost, Mathew V sounds utterly sublime. He possesses a versatile instrument and has proven his ability to sing any and everything. That is the biggest selling point. Beyond that, being backed by a jazz combo is absolutely sick! The string bass! The piano! The light, traditional swinging groove on the drums! EPIC! However, let’s address what separates Van Vooght’s single from the jazz of the past – he’s unapologetically GAY
! We live for it and #STAN! Clearly, Van Vooght characterizes about what his boy embodies and who he is NOT! It’s cute, honest, and incredibly authentic.
Final Thoughts
Mathew V is the sugar honey iced tea… regardless of what style of music he sings
! He definitely sounds in his element on
“My Boy”. As a long-life jazz fan (and jazz pianist), I adore what V serves up. Throw in the same-sex POV, and “My Boy” is absolutely FAB!
