Blige performing, โ€œTestimony.โ€

Welcome to Music Lifts ๐ŸŽถ ๐Ÿ‹, a column that seeks to highlight songs that encourage, inspire, and uplift the spirit; songs that exude fortitude, positivity, and resolve, even in the face of adversity.ย  Featured songs arenโ€™t genre-specific; songs may or may not be faith-based. The goal is for these songs to make you feel better โ€“ be LIFTED to new heights!ย  So, for the 13th edition of Music Lifts ๐ŸŽถ ๐Ÿ‹ (2023), we highlight ๐ŸŽต โ€œTestimonyโ€ as performed by ๐ŸŽ™ Mary J. Blige.

Mary J. Blige, No More Drama [๐Ÿ“ท: MCA]โ€œBut when I raised my head up to the sky / All of the emptiness was gone,โ€ ๐ŸŽ™ Mary J. Blige sings in the pre-chorus of ๐ŸŽต โ€œTestimonyโ€, the closing cut on her 2001 album, ๐Ÿ’ฟ No More Drama.ย  She continues singing, in uplifting fashion, โ€œIf you believe youโ€™ll see in time / That everything will be alright.โ€ The ๐Ÿ† Grammy winner makes valid points, no cap.ย  As always, her best attribute is her soulful, anointed voice, which is potent and filled with power.ย  The pre-chorus prefaces the centerpiece of โ€œTestimony,โ€ the chorus, where MJB asserts, โ€œItโ€™s gonna be alright / Everything will be okay / This is a testimony, Maryโ€™s story / Trouble donโ€™t last always.โ€ TRUE DAT!

balancing a barbell on fingerOf course, encouragement doesnโ€™t always hit without some context.ย  Mary J. Blige offers plenty of context early on. In the first verse, she informs of us her rollercoaster: good and bad days, having money and being broke, and loneliness.ย  In the second, she turns the corner, proclaiming โ€œThrough my trials and tribulations I still believe / That God had a greater plan for me.โ€ Amen ๐Ÿ‘! Hallelujah ๐Ÿ™Œ! ย Ultimately, Bligeโ€™s testimony, penned by herself, ๐ŸŽผ โœ Michelle Bell, and producer, ๐ŸŽ› Kenny โ€œFlavโ€ Dickerson, goes from anticipating Godโ€™s goodness by faith to receiving it. A prime example: โ€œHe wiped all my tears away.โ€ And splendid if underrated moment from No More Drama to say the least.
