Martjin Gerard Garritsen, better known as Martin Garrix, is one pretty cool dude.  No, it’s not only because of his dashing good looks, but also thanks to his musical abilities.  The Dutch DJ/EDM standout is only approaching his 24th year on Earth, but he’s been releasing music since he was a teen (“Animals” arrived when he was 17) – can you say wunderkind? On “Hold On,” Garrix collaborates with Russian DJ duo Matisse & Sadko, while enlisting the vocals of Michel Zitron.

“Afraid you’ve lost it all / Unsure of what the future holds / And now I can hear your call tonight…” From the jump on “Hold On,” the listener is blessed with the vocals of Michel Zitron – the man has a fine instrument to work with. He delivers what can be considered a beautiful and well-balanced performance.  The first (and second) verses are cooler, calmer, and more collected, while the chorus, undermentioned, amplifies the intensity level.

“I’ll dry every river in your eyes
I’ll light up the darkness in your mind
Remember, when life feels so unfair
Hold on, hold on, we’re almost there…”

Ah, lyrically/thematically, Zitron references love and perseverance – I’ll fight all your demons and your sins.” The music crafted by Martin Garrix and Matisse & Sadko parallels the ebb and flow of Zitron’s vocals.  While rhythm is constant throughout, during the verses, Garrix, Matisse & Sadko opt for softer, subtler synths and pad.  The chorus section provides the opportunity for great aggressiveness, particularly the post-chorus where the drop goes down.

Final Thoughts

Will “Hold On” change your life? Likely not (you never know though), but this is a solid dance record from Martin Garrix, Matisse & Sadko, and Michel Zitron.  The music is compelling, the vocals are sweet, and although the songwriting is simplistic and to some degree predictable, it’s ultimately successful.  All in all, a nice record.
