Marshmello x Juicy J, You Can Cry [Photo Credit: Columbia]Rising DJ/producer Marshmello pairs up with veteran Memphis, TN rapper Juicy for a brand-new single, “Cry,” featuring the falsetto of British X Factor winner, James Arthur.

Marshmello continues to dominate 2017-18, after dropping numerous singles alongside the likes of Khalid (“Silence”), Selena Gomez (“Wolves”), Anne-Marie (“FRIENDS”Speak Your Mind), and Logic (“Everyday”Bobby Tarantino II). This time, he pairs up with veteran Memphis, Tennessee rapper Juicy Jon “You Can Cry.”  The pair is assisted by British “Say You Won’t Let Go” hit maker, James Arthur.

“You Can Cry” begins with lush and moody production. Set in a minor key, Marshmello stitches up an excellent backdrop – a prepared canvas if you will – for the respective artists to paint upon.  James Arthur takes advantage, delivering a stellar dosage of falsetto.  The times I’ve heard Arthur, he usually sings in his ‘chest voice’ (his collaboration with Machine Gun Kelly, “Go for Broke” comes to mind) as opposed to his ‘head voice.’ A change of pace essentially, he does a fine job.  Following his choruses, Juicy J delivers his signature, hard-as-nails flow.  Does he say much? No, but the vibe is compelling, and he manages to keep things clean, which is surprising in itself.

Final Thoughts

All in all, “You Can Cry” is an enjoyable record from Marshmello, Juicy J, and James Arthur.  All three musicians showcase their strengths without reinventing anything.  As a producer, the mysterious Marshmello remains a force whose demand to produce should only ascend higher.  While Juicy J is in his forties, his flow still sounds as alluring as in his Three 6 Mafia days, even if he’s not serving up groundbreaking material.  As for Arthur, “You Can Cry” certainly won’t be the last song he’s asked to collaborate with other artists – he’s certainly talented.
