Marshmello is kind of a big deal.  When you think about it though, those DJs, man – they have a considerable following. Halsey – also kind of a big deal.  Actually, she’s quite a big deal.  She had quite the year in 2019 releasing the huge hit “Without Me”, and released her best album to date, Manic, in 2020.  Imagine a record featuring both talents working collaboratively? Well, that’s what goes down on single “Be Kind.”

Starting on the production end of things, Marshmello gives his featured vocalist a sleek backdrop to work with, period.  I mean, how can Halsey NOT be inspired by the work the dude’s put in? The synths are electrifying, the pads radiant, and the beat punchy. I particularly love moments when the song itself intensifies, and the ear is blessed with a percussive fill, sigh. He produces alongside Gian Stone, who also serves as a writer.  As for Halsey, she really steps up her game vocally.  She could always sing, so no disrespect in that regard, but, she brings more to the table – more excitement, more investment, and more oomph.  Of course, the best moment comes on the chorus:

“I don’t know why you hide from the one
And close your eyes to thee one
Mess up and lie to the one that you love
When you know you can cry to the one
Always confide in the one
You can be kind to the one that you love.”

Yeah, the chorus sums up the theme and what the lyrics of the verses lead to.  Matters of the heart are firmly in play, and Halsey’s significant other is messing things up.  Perfect plot for a song, right? Right!

Final Thoughts

Marshmello and Halsey – I’d say they make a pretty good team. “Be Kind” has hit written all over it; that’s obvious from the start.  Both musicians excel at their respective crafts here, making the musical collaboration ultimately a success.  “Be Kind” won’t change your life mind you, but, this is an enjoyable, well-executed dance/pop joint.
