ring on the outlandishness! Outlandish Rock 🎸🤘 is a column that falls under the umbrella of Controversial Tunes 😈🎶.  Like its parent column, Outlandish Rock 🎸🤘 provides background information and insight into rock and metal songs that raise eyebrows and stir the pot.  The records featured on Outlandish Rock 🎸🤘 can be classic or brand new. On the 3rd edition of Outlandish Rock 🎸🤘, we explore the controversy behind the song, 🎵 “MAMMAMIA” performed by 🎙 Måneskin.

Theme & Lyrics

“You wanna handle me, but I’m a bit too much / I’ll burn all the place down ‘cause I’m too fucking hot.” Ooh wee – those lyrics are indeed ‘fucking hot’ and it doesn’t stop there for Italian rock band, 🎙 Måneskin. 🎵 “MAMMAMIA” is NOT innocent, at least where matters of the bedroom are concerned. Besides ripe sexual innuendo involving size and genius placement of the f-bomb, singer 🎙 Damiano David sings on the chorus:

“Oh, mamma-mamma mia, spit your love on me
I’m on my knees and I can’t wait to drink your rain
I’ll keep the secret if you let me get a taste
Tell me your limits and we’ll cross the line again
Oh, mamma-mamma mia.”

Hmm, “Drink your rain,” huh? Wow!  While the sex is lit and “MAMMAMIA” is undoubtedly raunchy and risqué, there’s a bigger, more transcendent message beyond sex.  Måneskin has been criticized as a band in the past, and many instances on “MAMMAMIA” address it.  Sure, the sex is potent AF but there’s more than 👉 🍩.  There are two key examples.  The first occurs at the end of the first verse:

“They treat me like if I did something criminal
All eyes on me, I feel like I’m a superstar
I’m not a freak, I just thought it was carnival.”

As a celebrity, and sometimes as a regular person, it feels people never cease criticizing and scrutinizing everything you do.  David feels as if him and the band have been treated ‘criminal’ despite doing nothing ‘criminal.’  The second key example occurs on the second verse, where Damiano makes it clear him and the band are anti-drug:

“They wanna arrest me, but I was just having fun
I swear that I’m not drunk and I’m not taking drugs
They ask me why I’m so hot, ‘cause I’m Italiano.”

Final Thoughts 💭

Bitmoji ImageIt’s the sex, as well as the electrifying music that makes “MAMMAMIA” most engaging.  That said, I love how Måneskin defend themselves.  They balance outlandishness and sensibility 🎸🤘!
