Major Lazer, Cold Water © Mad DecentMajor Lazer drops catchy new single “Cold Water” featuring pop heartthrob Justin Bieber and Danish pop singer MØ.

In addition to awesome production, what makes a non-instrumental EDM song successful? The answer is simple – a big-name artist.  Sure, there are plenty of lesser-known headliners on electronic music cuts, but big-name features are huge selling points. “This is What You Came For” features Rihanna, while the Grammy-winning “Where Are Ü Now” featured Justin Bieber.

Getting Justin Bieber as a featured artist on any song is “kind of a big deal.” Is the kid still unlikable? Of course, but he is a major pop star and clearly showed more maturity on previous album Purpose. That’s the exact reason he might be featured on new Major Lazer single, “Cold Water.” In addition to the heartthrob’s appearance, , a rising star (“Lean On” and “Beg For It”) also guests.

“Cold Water” mixes an urban-pop sound with a reggae-tinged, dance beat.  What a mouthful! The verse sounds less dance-oriented, embracing more of a contemporary R&B.  This sound, guitars coupled with lighter synths, suits Bieber, who handles the verses and chorus.  Bieber’s tone is rich, showcasing his newfound deeper set of pipes.

“I won’t let go
I’ll be your lifeline tonight”

The chorus has clear separation from the verse, thanks to a more aggressive synth.  MØ provides backing support to Bieber on the chorus.  Even so, her biggest moment comes via the bridge.  The bridge is powerful, serving as a welcome contrast to verses and chorus.

Final Thoughts

Ultimately, “Cold Water” is pleasant.  The single isn’t “earth-shattering” (Bieber or no Bieber), but contains the cues to make it a big hit.  How successful will “Cold Water” be? Only time will tell, but likely, the water won’t be cold for very long.
