After releasing “Ancient Names, Pt. I”, “Ancient Names, Pt. II”, and “Wait by the River”, alternative rock band Lord Huron are back with “When the Night is Over.”“When the Night is Over” serves as the fourth teaser track from their highly-anticipated new album, Vide Noir (April 20, 2018).  Vide Noir is the band’s first album in three years (Strange Trails, 2015). What’s notable about Strange Trails is the hit it spawned, “The Night We Met”, thanks to the song’s use in the Netflix series, 13 Reasons Why.  But this is all about “When the Night is Over,” not “The Night We Met.”

Like the three singles that precede it, “When the Night is Over” is an impressive, well-rounded record. As in the past, the bass line is incredibly robust, promoting an old-school vibe.  In addition to the bass, a consistent, driving groove establishes the lilting six-eight meter.  Overall, the production is simple, yet highly effective.  Even given the simplicity, there’s soulfulness, often part of a successful formula for alternative folk/rock song.  Frontman Ben Schneider has room for his voice to breathe, never impeded by too many instruments or effects.  Schneider shines without being incredibly flashy vocally.  He’s somewhat reserved and subtle, but that subtlety – that cool energy – ultimately pays off.

Final Thoughts

Lyrically, “When the Night is Over” is thoughtful and beautifully-penned.  Furthermore, the vocals and relatively reserved production further builds a case for its soundness.  Lord Huron doesn’t ‘flip the game on its head’ or anything like that, but they manage to deliver another winning song ahead of Vide Noir.
