1. Jonas Brothers, “Sucker”

💿 Happiness Begins • 🏷 Jonas Brother Recording / Republic • 📅 2019

Jonas Brothers, Happiness Begins [📷: Republic]“I’ve been dancing on top of cars and stumbling out of bars / I follow you through the dark, can’t get enough / You’re the medicine and the pain, the tattoo inside my brain / And, baby, you know it’s obvious.” 🏆 Grammy-nominated pop bro trio 🎙 Jonas Brothers shocked the world by making a comeback (💿 Happiness Begins), which commenced with the enjoyable, love-centric single 🎵 “Sucker”. The ‘short but sweet’ single is a win for 🎙 Nick, 🎙 Joe, and 🎙 Kevin Jonas.  “Sucker” features an infectious groove from the onset.  Adding to the allure is some sick falsetto by Nick on the first verse, which occurs in abrupt fashion (“We go together / Better than birds of a feather, you and me…”). Set in a minor key, “Sucker” gives the Jo Bros more edge. It remains tongue-n-cheek, which reminisces back to their music of old, but certainly comes off less schmaltzy.

Joe carries the weight on the aforementioned pre-chorus, with portions sung with Nick.  Better than the pre-chorus is the memorable chorus.  Here, we hear the silky-smooth vocals of Nick, once more delivered in a well facilitated falsetto, at times joined by Joe.

“I’m a sucker for you, yeah
You say the word and I’ll go anywhere blindly
I’m a sucker for you, yeah
Any road you take, you know that you’ll find me...”

2. Lil Baby, “No Sucker”

Ft. Moneybagg Yo

💿 My Turn • 🏷 Quality Control Music • 📅 2020

Lil Baby, My Turn [📷: Quality Control Music / Motown]“Uh-oh, the game in trouble / Started off small, now they payin’ me double / Yeah, you can drip check, baby, like Mustard, yeah.” On 🎵 “No Sucker,” the 12th track on 💿 My Turn, 🏆 Grammy-nominated rapper 🎙 Lil Baby gets an assist from fellow rhyme spitter, 🎙 Moneybagg Yo. Safe to say, neither artist is a sucker in the least!

A surefire banger, the bars definitely pack a punch like POW – “Go against me, get hashtagged!” While Lil Baby is the main attraction, and certainly hits here, arguably, Moneybagg Yo may be more refreshing in the context of My Turn, where we’ve heard an abundance of the lead artist.

“Water on water, rockin’ ice on the yacht
Bought a traphouse and it came with a pot (Ugh, ugh)
The game in trouble like some badass childrens
Did they just really give me 80K for thirty minutes? Yup.”

3. Imagine Dragons, Lil Wayne, Logic, Ty Dolla $ign, Wiz Khalifa & X Ambassadors, “Sucker for Pain”

💿 Suicide Squad: The Album • 🏷 Atlantic • 📅 2016

Suicide Squad: The Album [📷: Atlantic]“I’m a slave to your games (I’m just a sucker for pain) / I wanna chain you up, I wanna tie you down / Oh, I’m just a sucker for pain.” Okay, two key points.  First of all, there is no shortage of musical artists who appear on 🎵 “Sucker for Pain”, one of the main attractions of 💿 Suicide Squad: The Album, the soundtrack to the 2016 film.  With 🎙 Lil Wayne, 🎙 Wiz Khalifa, 🎙 Imagine Dragons, 🎙 Logic, 🎙 Ty Dolla $ign, and 🎙 X Ambassadors, that’s a lot of 🎵 “Mouths to Feed” (or more accurately, people to pay). Second point: all of them are “suckers for pain,” of course!

“Sucker for Pain” is fitting in terms of the film.  Furthermore, it’s certainly respectable aside from it.  That said, this star-studded joint isn’t a game changer, ultimately.  Still, totally understanding why so many people are total ‘suckers’ for it!

4. Mika, “Lollipop”

💿 Life in Cartoon Motion • 🏷 Casablanca • 📅 2007

Mika, Life in Cartoon Motion [📷: Casablanca]“Suckin’ too hard on your lollipop / Oh love’s gonna get you down.” Four words: 💿 Life in Cartoon Motion. Just assume the absolute worst anytime a lollipop is thrown into the picture with contemporary music.  Really, the same thing could be said about “licking” or “sucking” in general… Anyways, even though 🎙 Mika references “Lollipop” in a sexual manner, he has good intentions.

Via a music interview from Digital Spy in which Mika was asked about a standout track, he cited “Lollipop” asserting the song is “about telling girls not to have sex too soon”. Mika’s message is appreciated, but there’s still a risqué nature written all over this hella catchy record.

5. Lil Wayne, “Lollipop”

Ft. Static Major

💿 Tha Carter III • 🏷 Cash Money • 📅 2008

Lil Wayne, Tha Carter III [📷: Cash Money]“I said, he’s so sweet, make her wanna lick the wrapper / So I let her lick the rapper.” Despite its age (more than a decade old), former no. 1 Billboard Hot hit, 🎵 “Lollipop,” remains potent.  🎙 Lil Wayne had a tremendous year in 2008 with his awesome, 🏆 Grammy-winning LP, 💿 Tha Carter IIIThe album was jam-packed with hit after hit, with “Lollipop” leading the charge. Sadly, this was a posthumous release for Kentucky rapper, singer, producer, and songwriter 🎙 Static Major, who died at age 33, two weeks before the record was released.  As a lifelong Kentuckian, it’s always awesome when you see a musician from state appear on a record as big as “Lollipop” was.

Weezy makes “Lollipop” quite steamy – he’s sexed TF up.  He certainly isn’t talking about ladies licking candy, but rather his ‘Lil Wayne’ – or perhaps big ‘Lil Wayne’ – okay, TMI… “Lollipop” is one of the catchiest rap songs about sex that you’ll ever hear. Static Major is responsible for the timeless hook:

“Shawty want a thug
Bottles in the club
Shawty wanna hump
You know I love to touch ya lovely lady lumps.”
