Lil Pump, Drug Addicts [Photo Credit: Warner Bros.]Lil Pump continues to build his career on clichés an utter shallowness on his latest, empty and irresponsible single, “Drug Addicts.”

I’d be lying if I proclaimed myself to be a SoundCloud rap fanboy – see my article chocked-full of skepticism.  But, regardless, there are plenty of people who are fans of the movement, particularly kids and adults that are younger than me.  In regards to teen rapper Lil Pump, I’m mixed.  On the one hand, “Gucci Gang” was a banger without reservation.  Also, loved his verse on “Baby Daddy” from the Lil Yachty mixtape, Lil Boat 2. As for “Esskeetit”, I was less impressed, not to mention some of the repetitive songs from his self-titled, 2017 debut.  He’s back with an incredibly ‘wholesome’ new joint, “Drug Addicts.”

“Drug Addicts” doesn’t deviate from the script for Lil Pump.  In regards to his flow, that’s not a bad thing. In regards to what he’s actually rapping about – the bars – that’s certainly debatable.  On the hook, as the title suggest, he raps about a “Whole gang full of drug addicts” which includes “Starting the day off with a pint (yeah, brr-brr).” Other than the respective drugs, the substance of the hook is minimal.  On the verse, he expounds upon his drug use, spitting, “I been smokin’ since I was eleven / I been poppin’ pills since I was seven.” Ugh.  He later brags, “In the courthouse off of ecstasy,” and adds, “Everybody ‘round me like them Oxy’s.”  Besides being filled with substances, he also throws in sex, twice, both referencing him as the beneficiary you might say.

Final Thoughts

So, what does one make of “Drug Addicts?” Being addicted to drugs is bad, and definitely shouldn’t be glorified – it can ruin a potentially great life.  Here, Lil Pump seems to be glorifying drug use as a 17-year old who could be using his come-up for bigger, better, and less shallower things. The production is respectable, as is his flow, but the bars and subject matter are way too inept to give this a favorable rating.
